The Stones goofing off a little and running through the songs casually adds about the exact same looseness the heroin did for Johnny down the street the night before, but with less overdiven amps. Other than that, this is as close to punk as the stones ever came, and just think, you got to see the rest of the show and the songs done straight for the cameras. For a certain type of Stones fan, this would be almost better than the show in some ways. This is certainly at the heart of the "New york" inspired Stones, especially and precisely _because_ it's a rehearsal for a live hip tv show in New York. The Stones in a science fiction comic book in their own understanding of things. They are definitely having fun doing it. Imagine coming all the way from singing Round and Round to this. It must have seemed like living in a movie, even when it was currently happening. I know the 80s in general had that to it. There was a real life drag of a mess that wasn't very glamorous at all and there was this self aware futurism fantasy thing that has become theoretically the normal way of seeing things but back then it was half way self aware, half a kind of intuitive but ignorant stab in the dark self deprecation about being modern that implies a pretense of wisdom that is never clearly defined, which also never dates, it would seem, as that has also stayed exactly the same. If you believe the voices that speak for us and will be recorded into the official version of "history:" "We've" been ironically living "in the future" since I was a kid. Every year it is a little more and a little less believable. The exact percentage of irony versus satire is the only quality that ever really changes. This is also the difference between science fiction and the evening news.
