The smallest unit is a fire team, a squad consists of 2 fire teams. A regiment is tradition, I was in the 13th Infantry Regiment, but we are actually just part of a brigade. 13th inf/ 2nd Bde. Complicated. But the regiment no longer exists as a maneuver unit.

@@morisco56 forever, eh. That could be a little optimistic given the rise of China, now the recent equal of the US, but soon could overtake Uncle Sam. China is fighting fit and a need to oust America as the new world hegemonic power. Empires come and go and in the last seventy years, two Empires have existed- the British, then the American and now that of China. While being an understandable response being smug is no position to take in the face of a changing and challenging new reality of a change in World leadership.

@@brucegibbins3792 the Chinese PLA is not an equal of the United States armed forces yet. Obviously they have a gigantic edge when it comes to numbers. But, their technology is currently lacking. I’m well aware China does possess some of the most advanced on earth, but that is still in small number relative to the amount of soldiers they need to equip. Much of their equipment is very new and still in need of having its “bugs” worked out. They’ve shown numerous times that the manufacturing quality is subpar to western (NATO) manufacturing. They also get far less training then their western and Russian counterparts... it’s also worth taking note of the fact that China 🇨🇳 itself doesn’t actually have a military. The “Chinese military” is actually the armed wing of the Chinese communist party. The PLA and PLAN spend a great deal of their training time on politics, such as “xi Jinping thought,” “Maoist” and Marxist theory for a few specific examples. The People’s Liberation Army needs to understand “socialism with Chinese characteristics” and according to the communist party themselves, almost 1/3 of their train timing is dedicated to that. Because again, China doesn’t have a military, the communist party does, and every PLA and PLAN member swears an oath to the CCP first, not China or its people. So.. I apologize that was kinda long. But yea, their not quite equals to the US (and the west at large) or even the Russian Federation in many many different ways. That’s not even my personal opinion, that’s been said by many people far smarter and far more informed than I am.

@@brucegibbins3792 China does not equal the US. All that nonsense you hear no the news from talking heads is from people who dont understand war. They make their comparisons on raw numbers. US has x ships and China has y ships they are evenly matched. The type of ships and and experience of personnel is key in a war. China does not know how to prosecute war on the sea much less land. Search "chinese subs mental health" most of their subs are having issues dealing with the isolation. Also look at the composition of their navy. Its mostly littoral ships that would be defensive in nature. They got repelled by the Indian army recently in the border dispute. None of their equipment is proven in battle. Their stealth jets are only stealth on paper. The F35 has flown over Iran by Israel and the F22 has scared the poo out of Iranian pilots by flying up beside them while trying to harass a US drone. Our ground forces have 20 years of fighting experience in complex asymmetric urban fighting. The value of this is evident in Russias recent invasion. Russia was plagued logistics issues pushing into a neighboring country where we are supporting operation halfway around the world.

@@jadenhiggins7167 Wrong - partly. When it came to battles between the US and the North Vietnamese army the US prevailed. But there were few of these to either win or loose. However, when it came to fighting the Viet Cong and their hit and leave tactics typical of guerrilla warfare, it was beyond the ability of America's conscript army to prevail descisivly. There have been many excellent books written about the Vietnam War. Numbering among the best of these is the history written by highly regarded British author and historian, Sir Max Hastings who also reported for the Times of London from the war zone of South Vietnam. There is also a documentary featuring his experience as a film journalist by Australian Neil Davis, this is also an extraordinary piece of documentary film making. The lives of two million people of SE Asia were taken by America's wicked military misadventures in the region that also cost the lives of around 85,000 Americans - a terrible squandering of young people's lives. The foolishly orchestrated believe of US driving policy, described at the time as the Domino theory, but this was BS. The imperative of the North Vietnamese was to unite their county by removing the then border at the 38th parallel after that division was established by the UN during French rule in their possessions in what was known as, French Indo China. Contrary to home held belief back in The States, America did loose the war they made on the people of all Vietnam. Circumstances, determined their withdrawal leaving without achieving any long term objectives leaving the country the US invited as a near basket case. Now, with the help of China, an historical enemy of centuries past, Vietnam survived its encounter with Western aggression an now prospers as a low cost manufacturing nation and independent of US interference that has now turned into a kind of friend- and that is a very good thing indeed.
@charliework1049
@charliework1049 2 года назад
You must also keep in mind these tactics and doctrines were meant for large scale conventional warfare against near-peer or close to near-peer adversaries using similar tactics and technology. The game changes when you're dealing with asymmetrical and guerilla warfare. That becomes a war on multiple battle spaces, including information/propaganda/local involvement. You're better off with a few hardened groups of special operators backed up by forward air controllers and air power, and training and equipping the locals (which is exactly what Russia did the last time they went into Ukraine.) But even then, if they don't want you there or are not motivated themselves it's also not particularly effective. In Ukraine I imagine the Russians are having a lot of issues with the copious amounts of man portable anti tank devices, which is modern times are incredibly effective against armored vehicles
