On the evening of August 20th, 2021 two vehicles were involved in a collision on a residential street. An SUV rolled onto its side, trapping the driver and passenger. Vancouver Firefighters performed a vehicle extrication via roof removal with Jaws of Life.
We arrived on scene within minutes of the initial call and started to document the firefighters initiating the extrication by stabilizing the vehicle. Within ten minutes they had removed the roof and started the rapid extrication of the trapped passenger and then driver.

That dam PASS alarm on the air pack. That should of been reset. The other thing that I’m not impressed with is the way they were throwing the personal belongings out of the Car. The victims are going through a lot being injured and trapped. And having belongings damaged by the firefighters. I’m a firefighter with 50 yrs of service and been to a lot of MVIs .

Vancouver Fire Rescue did an outstanding job of extricating both occupants of the vehicle. Firefighters are trained as first responders. Why were the BC Ambulance Paramedics on scene not allowed to do a triage assessment of the two injured men? They could have suspected neck and spinal injuries. Neck collars were not applied. I also saw a firefighter doing an assessment of one patient and asking questions. This should be the job of the paramedic(s) on scene.

In most jurisdictions, FFs are also EMTs if not also Medics. Many regions are doing away with previously taught c-spine stabilization techniques. Data does not support improved patient outcomes and the time it takes to package a patient with full c-spine support can hinder timely progress to the trauma center. Things have changed a lot in just 10 years.

That was the 1st extraction I've seen where the entire roof of the vehicle was removed!! Caught a glimpse of the corner w/the fence, wonder if that was partially responsible?? The homeowners came out to watch it all. The least they could have done was clap for the rescuers. It's a really tough , at times dangerous job, & they put their heart & soul into saving lives!! Who knows, 1 day 1 of them just might need 1 of these dedicated people!!!

Fire departments have to start utilizing the towing industry, incorporate them into their rescue practices. The VFD did an excellent job of securing and cutting the roof open on that Tahoe. It looked to have taken about 6-7 minutes to gain entrance. Now I was not there so I can not say positively, however, it would have taken approx 3 minutes for a properly trained tow-op to roll that vehicle very gently onto it's wheels with a twin line boom. And the truck would have only had to be a one ton tow truck. The FD could then cut the doors off (if needed) which didn't appear to be damaged and could have simply been opened. In some of the rural counties in Alberta, some of the FD's have started to work along side some of the towing companies and have witnessed first hand at just how useful they can be. (They all, RCMP, FD, EMS and tow do all work together very well but some of the FD's have started doing rescue/recovery with the help of tow-op's). It is something for them to think about. Great job though by the VFD.

Because the passengers could have spine or neck damage, one small move could paralyse them for life.

Nice use of the 0150 cutters. Most people don't understand the process of vehicle extrication. It's literally moving the vehicle away from the victim(s). Can be frustrating to watch because it takes some time. Had a triple fatal accident in Okinawa, involving teenagers, and it took us nearly two hours to extricate the only survivor. He lost an arm and a leg but lived to tell his friends about the hazards of drinking and driving. Though there was nothing I could do about the kids killed on impact I see that scene every few days and wonder if there was anything else I/we could have done. My only suggestion is that one of the firefighters could have been bracing the driver (victim) so he didn't have to keep himself upright during the process.

I get it that the passengers could have a spinal injury, but it seems they would be able to tell that right away. Roll the vehicle back on it's wheels and get the people out faster. This seems too slow to help them.

We are merely watching from the sidelines, they do this hundreds of times in their careers & are the professionals! Something may look 1 way to us but they know exactly what procedures to take. They r looking at a hundred diff things at the scene.

Never do that if someone has injured their spine doing that could paralyze them you never know for instance I broke my back and never knew it I walked on it for years and recently had an xray and the dr said I broke my back a while ago it already healed I said "news to me"
@BREC07
@BREC07 5 месяцев назад
It is too much of risk of injuring the victims way more when rolling over the vehicle again. It goes a long way to take a couple of minutes more to save their spine, than a life time on a wheelchair or a bed. The patients are stable, there is no rush. Ane If you were wondering, there are faster ways if they were not stable.

Why can’t someone make a jaws of life close way faster. These types of accidents are life or death and the faster they remove the ones in need matters greatly.
@elite1193
@elite1193 Год назад
Essentially there’s a very small margin of effectiveness between speed and cutting power, the faster it closes the weaker the cutting power. They close at the speed they do because it maximizes cutting power and minimizes time. If they closed any faster They’d have less cutting power, and if they had more cutting power they’d close slower.

I'm 2 years late to this but, I really don't comprehend why morbid lookyloos always gotta hang around and watch. It's like people are just waiting to see blood n guts and dead bodies or something. Or are they really that interested in how the firefighters do their jobs?! I've never had a desire to hang around crash scenes, or buildings on fire, or whatever else tragedy that happens. Lookyloos are plain freakin morbid in my opinion. 😒

This is a definition of misjudged situation on all fronts - number of firetrucks on site is too high - what if they need to be somewhere important? No gas leak, no visible threat to drivers life - the car should have been flipped in controled manner and drivers door easily opened then. Why cutting it like this & taking that long to do it?!
@sandrawestley4193
@sandrawestley4193 Год назад
Oh yes, flip em over, don’t give a dam about spinal injuries, just so long as it’s quick, if they all fall on top of each other what does it matter eh, you could be paraplegic for life, but they got you out quick, that’s all that matters, I’d keep the day job if I were you. My sons a firefighter and they do there job with commitment and treat the injured with care.
