Some of you have asked for a video about the cost of repair and maintenance for the Bentley T/ Silver Shadow series 1. I hope this will be helpful for those curious about these cars and anyone thinking of buying one. Keep in mind I am not a mechanic, but I can recount my ownership experience and hopefully it will be useful information!

There’s a tire shop near an old employer who had a 1979 Rolls Royce sitting in its lot. Turns out the prior owner took it in for a break job and never came back. In the back of my mind I keep thinking if I hit the lotto I’m buying that old Rolls and getting it restored…one can always dream.

Everything starts with a dream. But if you ever do buy one, get one is good condition because restoring one will cost an incredible amount these days.

Good review. I owned a 1975 Series 1. I eventually drove it considerable distances. But they are extremely expensive to repair and far more complex than most cars. The independent rear end can cause rear wheel steering as worn suspension bushes shift when cornering resulting in the car jumping sideways! The hydraulics include rams accumulators etc etc. I had 300 hours of work in one job and bills of $30000 ! Which stung. And the engine is a whole other story. If you really really want one buy a convertible as it is at least worth something and they are much better to drive. Fuel consumption is terrible. I bought a good car and turned it into a really good car. Loved it but happy to have sold it. Buy a convertible.

I bought an '89 Turbo R 5 years ago and set aside $ 5,000.00 for services. The major problem was the AC unit . Looking over 20 years of receipts , 3 previous owners spent almost $ 12,000.00 on AC repairs ! In my 4rth year , I found the problem which cost me overall , $ 3,400.00 ! Now in 5th year , I can freeze ice cream in the trunk ! In 5 yrs ownership , I've spent the $ 5,000.00 but have done all fluids , tranny service , axle service , one hydraulic pump rebuild and converted it over to semi-synthetic motor oil . I am selling it this Spring so I can buy a '75 SS which the owner has desired to let another custodian care for her . I'm the 13th custodian on the Bentley and will be the 3rd owner of the Silver Shadow .

Great video. So true to my own experience of my Silver Cloud 3, Silver Shadow 1, Turbo R and Azure. There is always one or two of them in the garage shop for service/maintenance/upgrade/repair but that still leaves me with a choice of great cars to drive. And they give more driving pleasure than pretty much anything else...

Oh Kaspar, I cannot thank you enough for this VERY valuable & informative piece of advice! Honestly, I wished this clip was way longer coz I could just listen to you for ages with the easy way you explained everything! I watched your clip of your road trip to Chicago too & loved it! I’m just about to jump into Rolls Royce ownership myself for the very first time so your clip couldn’t have come at a more pertinent time! I’m about to purchase a ‘76 Silver Shadow 1 & it is in absolute concours condition & is currently the most expensive Shadow on the market here in Australia at $60k. But it’s worth every penny as it is almost better than brand new & only has 61,000 original miles on it with a full service history. I’m so excited (& a tad nervous too I will admit!). Your clip has inspired me Kaspar, so again, THANK YOU & I look forward to seeing & hearing more clips about your beautiful Bentley T!! Happy motoring my friend! 😁

Good luck with your purchase and don't be discouraged if you have to sort out various things as you start driving it. My car was also a pristine low mileage example with 28,000 miles 15 years ago, but still... the adventure began. It turns out the "low mileage" was a plus for the cosmetic condition, but not for the mechanicals! As it was not driven very much, and needed a bunch of things. It's a process. I hope you can find a really good mechanic who knows these cars, because that will make all the difference in the world. It becomes a soul-searching question "DO I really love this car and enjoy driving it?" if "yes" then "Am I willing to, over time, do all of these things that are necessary to keep it going the way it was intended?" which becomes a financial question. It's a bit like a marriage! So, again best wishes with your adventure!

Just the video I was looking for, my uncle has a 73' silver shadow that I'm going to go check out in a few days. He dropped about 7 grand into it about 15 years ago, and drove it once during his wedding. Suposedly is in great condition but it's been sitting ever since. Hoping it doesn't need too much work!

From a friend's experience, replace ALL the seals, rubbers and grommets in the engine and transmission. Also, if you DO get it and keep it, DRIVE it regularly! That keeps all of the aforementioned items lubricated and flexible! My favourite Rolls Royce - a 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith, coachwork by James Young. Beautiful styling and elegance on wheels!

The maintenance is part of the enjoyment. I’ve learned so much, and have a better appreciation for these fine automobiles. It helps that I had room to install a lift. I’m halfway through the hydraulic maintenance and brake rebuild. 🤞
@KasparArnault
@KasparArnault 2 года назад
That's great! I have learned so much, just as an owner and I have tried to do some things myself, such as replacing brake pump seals, with help of a retired mechanic from RR club, but we messed up the job! the gentleman accidentally bent the metal line that comes off the pump and it ruptured so that led to a very costly replacement of that line. And then we didn't put the shims in right when changing brake pads, so I decided I may not have the right skills and knowledge for this. They are just like any car to work on BUT there is a big learning curve! I admire people who can do it.

Wonderful video! RU-vid is a great resource for DIY tutorials. Very helpful in determining "I can do that," versus "I better not do that!" I would like to point out that I've looked at more than one Rolls-Royce project car, offered by naive sellers that had no idea what they were getting into when they purchased a non-running car...that also needs paint and body repair from rust. Some cars would put you upside-down from mechanical repairs before rust, paint and upholstery issues were addressed. Especially with fuel- injected cars! Buy the best running car you can afford and don't be afraid to walk away from a project car EVEN if was offered to you for free! Especially if you have no prior experience with these cars!

I owned a 1979 SS2, I bought it from a shyster in N.Virginia who specializes in these cars. I found out the hard way about these cars and the people who work on them. You must have an expert inspect the car before you buy it. This jerk said he will give me all the work receipts, but never did, he through them out so I wouldn't know what had been done. He would buy his parts from NAPA if it would fit, and charge the RR price. He showed me the anti-raddle springs on the disc brakes, when my back was turned, he removed it. I found a man I could trust and found it out. The disc brakes belonged on a VW or something real small, not on a 6,000 pound car! Get in the RROC and talk to people about who you can trust, etc. Put 200/400 miles a month on it, keep it in shape, exercise it. You let them sit, it will give you some trouble, other than that, enjoy the ride.

Good accounting of what you will be in for in maintenance and that is only if you acquire one in very good condition to begin with. Problem is going to be finding technicians knowledgeable enough to service and repair them. They are at least 50% mechanically different from other cars. The mechanics who serviced them are either deceased or past the age of working. I retired after 35 years of servicing them and am 80. Your best bet is to buy some tools, access service information and join the RROC which has a repair forum for members. Thousands of searchable posts explaining many facets of Silver Shadow and other era servicing and repair. Lots of fun if you like mechanical automotive challenges.
