Roly Polies are also extremely well protected. One night, while living in SoCal, I witnessed a large adult fall into a Black Widow's web and watched the large spider come out and bite on it for a long time....at least for 1/2 hour, when finally, the Widow cut it loose and the Roly Polie dropped to the ground. A few minutes later, it unfolded and unhurriedly walked off as if nothing happened. I was really surprised it actually survived the encounter. I wonder if the bigger, stronger Australian RedBack Widow, which I have seen in action against many other bugs without losing a battle on another You Tube channel, would be successful in eating a Roly Polie.

I have a prosperous colony of isopods in a potted plant at my office, that I have had for many years. Although there are also millipedes and rove beetles sharing the space that are thriving, I agree the isopods are monsters. They eat their shed skins. They eat their own dead. Once I rescued a wounded one, and put it in the colony in hopes it would recover, and the others ate it alive. This is even though I keep them well provided with dead leaves, bits of fruit, and their favorite thing, cheese. I have not seen them eating the millipedes, but the millipedes are very small, so maybe I have just not caught them at it yet.

I can’t tell because of the foil, but I’m not sure if your ant population grew enough to the point where they need to clear out. If you really want to encourage them to move out, remove the foil, they don’t like light. Speaking of, I would suggest making a cover for the glass so when they move into the sand area where you wanted them to dig, they can do so comfortably without feeling exposed to the light. Something similar as to what AntsCanada did for his Volcano setup. I’m not sure if you’ll be making another terrarium soon, but I have an idea of one if you have room, a terrarium island (tank) set up in an aquarium. Basically a tank within a tank, the aquarium acts like a moat and use that as the critters water source instead of the high quality pond you have currently. Just an idea. Edit: I forgot to add, ants LOVE and need sugar, experiment what kind of jello they like, if you’re feeling up to it, make some yourself, some fresh live prey would be good for them too, they’re hunters and gatherers, more lively if they hunt something that’s struggling.

I don't realy want to force them out because that might stress them too much. The terrariums is against the wall when I'm not filming so they aren't exposed to light. I like the idea of an island terrarium very much! I was already thinking about a way to do something like that

@HomemadeEcosystems ah, I see, I didn't realize it was against the wall, nvm on that part then. And I get why you don't want to stress them out, but I've done it with my Honeypots and Fire Ants, but you do what you are comfortable with, just giving my suggestion and experience, but in the end of the day, they're your babies so you make the call (: And awesome, glad to hear that (: I thoroughly enjoy your content, so keep it up (:

Thanks for this update. My garden is being under attacked by ants and these dam potato bugs aka rollie pollies aka demons from hell. They're eating everything in sight... i have organic plants that seem to be working. then I transplant them to other areas or in the road to be eaten by my neighborhood birds. Just became a member on your patreon, keep up the great content brother, love the terrarium videos.

It's possible that flies are too hard to eat for a small colony and would be more active if they had easier/better food to eat

Porcellionidae, Fern and Ginko trees are those typse of things that always make me stop in awe as this is in fact the perfect evolution that was there before the dinosaurs and will be there when we as a species have vanished again. Just amazing

I started a terrarium last year. It wasn't doing great at first, but I let it go to see how things balanced. I added two wood lice hoping they'd help with the mold attempting to spread and sporadic outbreaks of fungus gnats. Things were touch and go, but finally balanced out thanks to my little friends...who made more friends. So many baby friends. I'm not sure how many are in there at the moment, but I've watched some become little teenagers from the white pupa (?) stage up to mini gray adults. Then, as a final surprise in the drama, when I thought my original two had died a good while ago one day I saw Big Mama appear! She's still going! (It occurs to me I may have my timeline off...I have no idea what their lifespan is. Maybe it's one of her earlier offspring with the same color pattern.) Either way I was genuinely overjoyed. Moreso than I ever thought I'd be about some bugs in a glass jar. But sometimes since not enough things are dead and decaying in there anymore if I don't feed them they'll start to eat the live plants, so yes they do have a devious side, but morally justified by terrarium law.
