Since the Roman Republic was founded this Forum was used as the main city center, a central market place, and a gathering space for triumphal processions. Daily shopping was done here, elections were held, senate meetings, public speeches, and religious ceremonies all took place here. Most of these buildings were destroyed after Rome fell, becoming abandoned and slowly buried under centuries of earth. It’s only been about 100 years since this whole area was finally brought to light, becoming the tourist attraction it is today.
