The Romans used moulds for quite a lot of their ceramics including Lamps, Votives, Deity Figurines and even the decorated Samian Ware.

The edges only need to be slightly wet, as the pressure of pushing the two halves of the mould together creates a permanent bond.

Excellent video! I was curious if we have any evidence that the Romans used a plaster moulds? I know there are several Byzantine finds of oild lamp ceramic moulds. How long do your plaster moulds usually last?

Hi Jason, I am told that there are plaster moulds from Italy although the only ones that I have seen here in the UK have been ceramic. It's much easier to get a crisp finish with plaster and the moulds do last for hundreds of impressions. Ceramic moulds are even more durable.

These are wonderful! Can one buy molds for this or do you have to make them yourself?

Hi, we don't at present. Only because they take a long time to make and the price would have to reflect that. We are looking at the possibility of making a generic lamp mould that we could produce cheaply. Watch out on our shop www.potted-history.co.uk

Hi! Quick question, if you could help a student working on an exhibit of Roman oil lamps out (gotta love niche exhibit assignments). I'm working on an animation to demonstrate production process, and this video is super helpful as it is. But did they drill out the oil and wick holes before or after the clay dried?

Hi Jenn, I generally wait till the clay is leather hard, usually the day after they were moulded.

HI! It's very great job. I'm trying to realize one like your, but I have a problme to create the mould. Can you help me?

Hi, We haven't yet made a video on making the mould. Maybe that is a topic we can cover in a future video. You need to start by making the lamp design and then take a plaster mould of this archetype lamp. Good luck :)
