@aloyna's watercolour creations After reading through the comments I have a question. If you're so offended by what you call DS dupes why are you buying more RS colors thereby supporting a company you have basically accused of stealing? I have almost all of the DS colors, with the exception of the Interference colors, as well as RS and I find them both to be lovely paints. Our artist community should be building each other up rather than going after others! I believe RS is a great and affordable brand for these who want artist paints but can't afford DS. And for the record, DS is my favorite brand of watercolors.
@miosznosiadek4920

Aquarius Green by RS, is similar to Undersea Green by DS, but inly in masstone. Significiant is for some artist paint is similar to Cascade Green. Cascade and Undersea are quite different shades, aren't they?:) Paint behave quite different, there are not aggressive separation like in DS, more water you use, more differences you see. The same with Przybysz's Grey, intesity of that shade is unbeatable and there is no aggressive separation like in Moonglow. Check it in sunlight ;) Btw. Are Wisteria or Lavenda by DS dupes of Holbein's shades? :P It is impossible not to manufacture new shades, which are not similar to existing ones.

Miłosz Nosiadek Everyone is entitled to their opinion.... :) Firstly what has Cascade Green to do with this? I confused the name and made it clear there and then. Back to the point, the fact is these are not just some colours, they are the signature colours of Daniel Smith, also that they are a specific mix of pigments. As I have demonstrated these are straight up dupes, and not just “slightly” similar. Companies and Artist need to respect the pioneering creators. And whilst it is ok to be inspired by them it is certainly NOT ok to produce a copy and profit from it. :) And that’s just my humble opinion.

@@AlyonasWatercolourCreations I my humble opinion these two (Aquarius Green and Przybysz's Grey) paints are not copies. Shade is not only a factor of paint, others, like mixing potential, flowing ability, speed of granulation, undertone are also important. You ordered more RS paints, please check them carefully and give us your verdict. Significient, for many artists - Mineral Violet is similar to Imperial Violet, for others is similar to Rose of Ultramarine. Sometimes eyes see, what they want to see, if they are looking only for similarity, they might not see differencies. In one of comments below, I've read Aussie Red Gold was originally created by Art Spectrum. I haven't heard, it is a dupe of Australian Red Gold - they even use the same Pigment - no wonder - DS use same pigments in mentioned before Lavender or Wisteria. Holbein was first, then DS, VanGogh, Rembrandt and others. Are they dupes? I haven't heard that word from you. Does DS make profit by selling these colors? Roman Szmal at least change pigments content and make his Lavenda more blue. Shadow Violet by RS is name only related to DS, and You shouldn't call monopigment paints dupes, like in Hematite Violet Shade. In that case, almoast all paints on the world are dupes, aren't they? Btw. Caput Mortuum by RS is also similar to Hematite Violet Genuine by DS, which one of these is a dupe? In my opinion, as a proffesional painter, the more companies will manufacture more shades, the better for us. Prevoiusly, I was using paints from different manufacturers: mainly DS, W&N, white nights, Schmincke , some Holbein and Senelier. Now, I completly rely on Aquarius paints, not only becouse of low price and good availability. I love granulation and separation, I enjoy wide selection of "earth pigment" line and mainly becouse of their easy rewetting abilities. I bet that there are some painters here that used other brands and changed their mind and started using Roman Szmal's :) they can say what they think :)

@@miosznosiadek4920 all of them is dupe of Caput Mortuum Vitrioli 🤣 or (haematite iron oxide) early form or side form of copperas process of Venetian red. Known from XVII XVIII cc. (iron surik) classic pigment. It was pretty interesting reading for me. Thank you. p.s. "caput mortuum" also mean "worthless remain" shadow violet also has Mijello gold (pg7 + pr122)

If any paint company wanted to keep their specific color name and/or formulation proprietary, they can apply for trademarks and patents, including worldwide. Coca-Cola/Coke has the worldwide trademark and patent on their name, and their secret cola recipe. There are thousands of colas in the world, but none can call themselves Coca-Cola/Coke, or use the recipe (which would have to be stolen). Winsor & Newton is the sole manufacturer of the Rose Madder pigment (PR9). They do not need a trademark, because they have the only "genuine". Their paints are "Rose Madder Genuine". Other paint companies have various rose madders (permanent, hue, etc). DS had their own Rose Madder Genuine until a few years ago, when they stopped producing the genuine. I don't know if they were making their own PR9, but the process is very long, expensive, and intensive. They may have been buying PR9 from WN. If any paint company has not trademarked or patented a paint name or formulation, it's because they did not want to, or their application failed because the name/formulation was not unique.

Daniel Smith weren't the "pioneers of those colours" lol. These pigments have existed and interacted with each other for centuries. That Daniel Smith decided as a company to package a combination as a convenience colour doesn't mean that they invented the colour or the interaction. Greys mixed using blues, greens, reds and violets, and greens using blues and yellows did in fact exist before Daniel Smith stuck a hefty price tag on a marketable name. Daniel Smith did not invent colour theory. Something not having been *packaged and sold* before doesn't mean it hasn't been *created* before. It may be worth considering what "literally exactly the same" means, too, because your personal interpretation of it differs dramatically from the established definition.

What's the issue with DS and RS? The results might be the same but RS used a different colour so they haven't stolen anything from DS, who, though great, are way way way over priced. It's great to see the colours at affordable prices. The Primatek by DS are way overpriced and NOT genuine at all in most cases it seems from independent researchers, so they rip artists off by false advertising, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander! RS colours here are beautiful and I will look on open stock for the ones I like. Thankyou for doing this video.

Luckily for anyone looking for pretty much the same set, jackson's has the beginner set of 5 that is almost identical. They swapped the red out for a similar one though, instead of the azo red it's aquarius red PR214. They are such lovely paints :D

The only 2 colours that are the same in the Starter Set that I have also linked are: Lemon Yellow and Aquarius Green. The other three although may look similar at first glance are different: Aquarious Red instead of Azo Red; Ultramarine Light instead of French Ultramarine; and finally Caput Mortuum instead of the Hematite [Violet Shade].

To be fair Undersea Green is only a name, it’s not a known colour.. like Prussian Blue. The Aquarius paint is not using the same pigment, so they’re very much entitled to call it Aquarius Green….

Horrible attitude aside regarding similar colours, thanks for the swatches. You betcha I'll be going for the cheaper, and more affordable brand! Actually, now I'll go out of my way to avoid DS because of your attitude about them. Supporting the older, more established European brands is probably better for us anyway.

I love the beautiful granulation of Roman Szmals French Ultramarine. If you are thinking of trying more interesting colours I would also recommend Naples Yellow Deep, Pyrrole Rubine, Nickel Titanate Yellow, Shadow Violet, Ocean Blue, Caput Mortum and Cyprus Burnt Umber. Many of the earth tones have interesting granulation and I found the first 4 colours I mentioned to be wonderful mixing colours as well as being beautiful on their own.

I got the fabulous Polish artist, Kris Kowalski's, special Aquarius set from Jackson's last month. Gorgeous colours! I also pounced on the Aquarius starter set too, as they were both on special at the time. One thing I've noticed is that the pans flip out of the cardboard box too easily. Fortunately, they fit perfectly into a Meeden metal watercolour palette which keeps them firmly in place. ☺

Hello from Canada! Thank you for your video. I love Roman Szmal paints. I am waiting for a new set and it is taking a long time. They are all Lightfast or Very Lightfast (7 or 8 on the Blue Wool Scale). This is informations that is on their printed color chart. All the informations you want to know is there. If you like the Hematite, you will love Caput Mortuum which is also PR102 and separating more than Hematite in my opinion. Van Dick Brown, NBr8, granulates like crazy. Other nice separating color are Ocean Blue PBr24/PB15:3, Shadow Violet PG50/PB29/PV19 (not the same color as Daniel Smith) and the Olive Greens. Personally, I don't mind that they have colors that look similar. They do not have the same composition.

Yeah after seeing your review i plumped for 6 white nights instead for same price approx. I wanted a more transparent ltd palette and it seemed more fun to pick my own. So not done anything but swatch and mixes with them yet but seem to give a broad range of colours. I got aurilion ..golden(should have got deep!) Ruby..perylene violet..ultramarine...burnt umber. And yes earth colours are not fantastic in white nights, but i wanted it in there. Overall i would say this brand for price/quality are fantastic. Tho look at the pigments not colour description. Aurilion was nickle azo yellow which is what i wanted...a really good work horse yellow.

I do agree with you that it's not ethical to dupe other brands, but at the end of the day, DS is not accessible to all. For a lot of counties in East Europe, for example, is very hard to order such paints (Jackson's ships from UK and Sweden to said countries, but the prices are ridiculous). Roman Szmal has just one real competitor here, and that is the White Nights brand.

The thing is Roman did not dupe anyone because DS does not own color. So nothing unethical happened here.

@@BrazoDelDiablo Yes, I agree, DS does not own color, but they have a unique recipe with a unique result, and making something very similar is in the grey aria. As an artist, I do not own flowers or colours or anything, but my work is my own and if someone makes a pattern incredibly similar with mine and gives a similar name and says "yes, I know you and your work, but my pattern has nothing to do with yours because you don't own those exact flowers", well, it is not OK. Not at all.

@@MassimilianoDeliso if those brands had invented colour theory then you would be correct. Being the first to package a combination and sell it at a premium doesn't mean they invented or discovered a colour or combination.
