I come up to this guy 2-3 years ago to understand gypsy jazz... i didn't undestand much at the time so ignored and kept on searching about scales,arpeggios and other related tutorials getting myself more and more frustrated. after years of trying to undestrand jazz, gypsy jazz... I watched some documentaries about django, and on those documentaries there was this guy. Now by luck iv'e found this tutorial again searching on the web, Gotta say that i completely forgot about this tutorial existence... After seeing all the documentaries and things about this guy i got excited seeing and remembering this again, and even though i don't speak french i followed every single step this guy taught and put the(shitty) yt translator on.. I only can say this is unbelievable, i really improved and started to understand things a lot more! you won't find anything like this on the web, So i'm trying to share my experience. Another thing that i want to share with you that helped me a lot watching those documentaries is about listening to melodies and trying to play them on your instrument. Fast melodies whatever it is, always listen and try to make them ur own (transcribe them). Once you learn them internalize them in your playing. i heard a lot of gypsy players like Bireli and many others don't have at all a music theory knowledge and like Joe pass said, once you start to get into more advanced jazz you can't talk in theory it's too confusing. you talk with music, the melodies talk. So i think at the end of the day, once you have those patterns down and understand a bit how everything is working it's all about building your vocabulary and your style by listening other things and incorporating them in your playing. So please don't ignore this tutorial like i did, this is pure gold. He teaches a lot! Once u have all that down is gonna make an immense difference in ur playing!
Exactly same experience here, I watch this years ago and even though I'm french native I couldn't parse it and actually understand anything... now coming back years later with more practice and a better trained ear, it all makes sense. It's not really about what he says I guess, but the way I look at what his doing on the fingerboard... Anyway as you say, it's all about building a vocabulary the theory is not needed at all. Practice is key!

Bonjour Romane....... Voilà mon avis ...... comme je suis un guitariste..... découvrant la guitare jazz manouche.....j était dans le Blues reggae....etc......la je découvre....que je rentre dans l immense forêt de l Amazonie.... tellement que le chemin est long puis immense quand à la découverte de ce style très particulier de la guitare..... Le concept est simple par rapport aux exemples montré ils est fluide comme le fleuve et l impide comme le souffle...en résumé ne pas avoir peur de s entraîner..... tout les jours....et tout les jours veut dire tout les jours..... pour enfin sortir en sortir et découvrir l immense fleuve Amazone......qui donne ce chemin à la connaissance en guitare..... La guitare jazz manouche c'est vraiment quelque chose..... Félicitations.....et je vais essayer de comprendre pour commencer à y faire mon chemin .
Je dois vous dire que je suis un modeste joueur de billard américain .....et par cette pratique j ai réussi à ralentir les crises d'épilepsie ..... dû à la pratique des ... sports de combats car le billard ma obligé à porté mon attention .....et concentration...etc etc etc.... maintenant la guitare.....c est un univers d'utilité pratique quand a ma main gauche et ma main droite la connexion et le rééquilibre de la pensée en fait la guitare jazz manouche il ne faut pas s en cacher c est difficile....c est très difficile même....et les médecins que je vois m ont tous simplement fait comprendre que c est à moi de trouver ce rééquilibrage mentale..... alors je découvre le jazz manouche très différents.....où il faut apprendre un autre concept une autre vision une réadaptation donc dans mon cas une solution de mieux m'adapter à la réalité .....le jazz manouche à cette particularité.....d adaptation..... afin de pouvoir s exprimer comme le billard d'où sa difficulté.....
Thanks for posting. I would like to buy this DVD/Tape, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. I looked for it at Amazon.FR. A pity it's not there. Of course it would be easier to understand in English, but Romane does a fine job of getting his ideas across. Vive le Jazz Manouche.
