The word salary comes from the latin word sale which means salt. In the Roman times the salt was so expensive and quite hard to get that the Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt, hence the word salary 😉

Turda is my hometown! we ve been visting the salt mine many times, before it got renovated and before it became a big touristic place. it looked SO much different back then, and one time we even got to see an old extraction cart on the small, full of salt railways. i wish more people could ve had an opportunity to see the old one aswell, back when there was poor lighting and it was extremely dark on the wooden stairs. it made you feel remorse for those who actually had to work there in acient and even post-war times, when it wasn't a fun place but a vital resource for the people that lived here

I'm so happy that you like Romania! And also, so happy you're enjoying your trip here! Romania is a beautiful, very underrated country it literally hurts. But people like you promote it more than the actual people with this particular job... Never been to Turda (I actually went to another salt mine here called Praid, which is also in Transylvania) but I will definitely visit it some time! You have still so much to do/see in Romania! Thank you and have a great journey still!! P.S. Cluj is an asbolutely gorgeous city...rated one of the safest in Europe...extremely good public transport and good restaurants..been there...it's a very fun city.

if you want to see a big salt mine... check out the salt mine from Praid.Is also a nice place near mountains.before can stop to Sovata (Bear Salt Lake) and after, a beautiful road at Cheile Bicazului and Red Lake or the only vulcanic lake from this country Lake st. Ana.

The underground lake with the boats reminds me of the salt mine in Salzburg Austria. I went in 1974, you get down there with a series of long slides (sit on a rug), followed by trains and it was one of the coolest things I ever saw.

Happy to you see you had fun, if you didn't leave the country and you can make it possible, I would really, strongly suggest visiting the "Bear's Cave" from Bihor city, for me it was pretty hard to pick a favorite between the Bear's cave and Turda salt mine, there's also a glacial cave somewhere near Bear's cave, maybe your guides know them. (for me particularly it was like I was transported to other world while in the Bear's Cave), I really think it would be something that would make you remember Romania even more.

You have to go also to other Salt Mine in Romania: Praid, Tg. Ocna, Prahova. Also I recommend to visit Maramures: Baia Mare, Sapanta, Barsana Monastery; Moldova: Suceava, TG Neamt, Piatra Neamt an all old Monastery.

Next time you should visit more,around Turda we have Turda gorge,Tureni gorge,Aiud gorge is realy close,next is Cluj Napoca beautiful city with Hoia Baciu haunted forest and many others,gold mines of Roșia Montana,Salciua and Raven's nest

In English the right name of our country is Moldova not Moldavia. Officially it´s called the Republic of Moldova. Moldavia is the name that the Russians gave to our country. And I do agree with you, there is an East- Moldova because there is a West-Moldova which is part of Romania and we are actually the second Romanian State hoping one day to become just one country as we used to be in the past - Greater Romania!

There's also a sad story about the horses that were used to get salt out of the mine, they were kept inside the mine until they went blind because there was almost no light in there

Oh Man, i wish i got to see this beawtiful place with my own eyes, i went to this place 2 or 3 years ago and when i looked at the height before going down i had a panic atac and went home almost crying. and btw, 1 pund means around 4.5 lei.
