Western misconceptions of Romania are broader than just WWII. Romania is an anomaly. It is a Latin country surrounded largely by Slavs and does not fit in the region. I am half Romanian by way of Canada and when I tell people that I often get "so you are a gypsy."
because the ressemblance romanian - rom (which is the self-denomination of gypsies from balkans) the root is the same rom comes from 'romeios' which means 'byzantines; or byzantines citizens with full legal rights', this self-denomination, adopting the term of the full-citizens, expressed gypsies desire to be considered like the others, byzantine subjects (on those times of injustice was synonyme with 'protected by the state/emperor')
That people are racists and not informed. And abbaut Romanian anomaly been suronded by slavs, that talk a lot abbaut Romanian power to resist and adapt.
there was no need to attack the germans - these ones didn't attack the finish troops and did not bomb the capital, destroying the national theatre, palaces etc romanian's offer consisted in 3 days armistice for retreat, the germans rejected this offer with their arms
An objective summary of those years! I would like to add that, today, we can also see a new wave of Romanian historians who, like Grant, are not afraid to debunk many nationalist myths Romanians grew up with, especially during the communist years. And not just about the events around WWII, but also all the way back to the Dacians and beyond....
I would question whether Romanian generals were loyal to Germany in 1944. I would suggest the King's problem was that he feared too many may have been too loyal to Antonescu. He need not have worried. The Germans noted that the Romanian generals remained "könig treue". Even Antonescu was looking for a way out of the German alliance, but rather too slowly.
It's the same difference if the generals were too loyal to Antonescu because the dictator was so committed to the Germans. He made some half-hearted attempts at negotiating an armistice, but nothing serious. Even the day he was arrested, he still held unrealistic expectations of conditions to obtain from the Soviets.
antonescu was looking for a way out ONLY WITH hitler's approval, which was complet madness (margareta 2 was in stand-by and his mistress was veturia goga, nicknamed 'hitler's nightingale')
@@markaxworthy2508 I didn't say he had hitler's approval, on the contrary, he would never get it, read carefully. But even minutes before his arrest he insisted it's a question of honour to fly to berlin and convince hitler there is no other choice.
the king had no problem with the generals, he made the coup for them, and in 23 instead of 26 at their insistence the problem was the lack of romanian troops in the capital and the prevalence of the germans they rely mostly on 12.000 gendarmes
because the american bombings were terrible in aug 44, when the coup occured, the total production was less than 17% of the initial figures, many facilities were in ruins
romania forces where terrible. they coused stalingrad and switched side and attacked germany in back. Its a huge chance thry do same again. Romania current forces are terrible. 20 years to train 10 f16 pilots...
Also the German high command placed Romanian 3rd Army on a front too long to defend. It was the German high command that underestimated Soviet strength. What "coused" Stalingrad was German failure to withdraw to a sensible defensive position before the Soviet counter-attack on Nov. 19.
@@deepcosmiclove completely destroying the city of Stalingrad when you need a place to spend winter with only barren steppe for a few hundred kilometers around was also not a very good idea.
