Spanish Romance is without a doubt one of the most iconic pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Its history has been speckled with conjecture as to who actually wrote that piece. At various times it has been attributed to Antonio Rubira, David del Castillo,[1] Francisco Tárrega, Fernando Sor, Daniel Fortea, Miguel Llobet, Antonio Cano, Vicente Gómez and Narciso Yepes! (sourced from Wikipedia).
I think it's easier just for it to remain anonymous! From a compositional point of view the piece is in Binary form starting out in E-minor then modulating to the tonic major. My first guitar teacher taught me a couple of variations which I have included in this transcription. The first is a slightly different series of bass notes at the end of the A section. The second is a coda that incorporates a series of artificial harmonics played over a F#-minor chord followed by an E-major chord. Finally culminating in 3 artificial harmonics on the 1st string pitched at one octave, then an octave+5th, then 2 octaves.
Technically speaking the piece is not too difficult yet it is a beautifully written piece with an unforgettable melody. A single pattern in the right hand is used throughout the piece and with the exception of a couple of difficult stretches in the B section the piece is not overly challenging for the left hand either.

Hi Joshua I have this problem where I bend my left wrist inward a lot when playing barre chords especially in this song. No matter how hard I try to keep my wrist relaxed and straight, I find myself bending my wrist again! Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks again for all your work and advice.
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 лет назад
Hi Bre. I know that problem. You need to find a wooden ruler and a nun and ask her to smack you with it each time it happens!
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 лет назад
If you can't find those items then just try pushing your elbow outwards and away from your body. That should counteract the tendency to bend the wrist inwards. The elbow is very important in guitar but it is often overlooked as the source of technical issues in the left hand.

LOL thanks Joshua, I will most definitely try! I've actually never thought about moving my elbow. Thanks again for all your help.

The wooden ruler and nun story is real. That is how my music teacher Mrs. Jean Walker at college was trained for the violin. Obviously she attended a catholic school and that was their teaching method.

Love your tutorials....I have just started playing guitar in the last couple of years and until now, I hadn't tried classical....I think I will be adding to my guitar collection and getting a classical guitar in the near future......
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 7 лет назад
Hi Jennifer. Thanks a bunch for saying that. Nice comments like that are so encouraging. I find classical guitar so rewarding because you can just tinker away in your room and create awesome music that sounds so full and rich and it's just you and your guitar! What kind of classical guitar are you thinking of buying?
@jennifermooy9925
@jennifermooy9925 7 лет назад
Not sure yet. I think I am going to rent a couple diffent ones to see what I like before I buy. Any recommendations on which guitars are good for someone just starting out?
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 7 лет назад
Jennifer Mooy I think you can't go wrong with any classical guitar from the Yamaha/Takamine/ManuelRodriquez and even Alhambra ranges. These are all reputable brands that provide surprisingly good instruments at low prices.

You know what? I actually filmed a bar chord tutorial about 2 months ago but I didn't like it so I never uploaded it. I think I'll make another as it does seem to be the bane of many guitarists.

Hello..... I also bend my wrist it's really frustrating I been trying to learn this song for about 4 years now I'm just making bad mistakes.... any tips please
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 5 лет назад
Hi Martin. Keep your elbow pointed to the ground and kind of push your entire arm forwards under the neck. That should go some way towards straightening your wrist. Another way of thinking about it is to play from 'underneath' the neck rather than from behind it.

@nbnguitar 8 лет назад
Hi Ethan. Nice to hear from you again. How's your progress with the other pieces? You can download the tabs yourself now. Click on the more button underneath the video and you'll see a link to Gumroad. Click on that and it'll take you to the tab you need. You can enter $0 for the tabs or you can enter any amount you wish and it'll be yours. Tabs are free but the sheet music with tabs has a small cost. Let me know if you have any issues and I'll send them out to you (just like the good old days)
