The 2nd Samnite War had mostly devolved into a stalemate. The Samnites and the Romans both knew this. Neither could quite get the best of the other. If the Samnites took a town in Campania or convinced a town in Latium to come cover to their side then the Romans retook that town or conquered one in Samnium and vice versa. Those in charge in Rome and in Samnium were beginning to realize that this war had run its course and that peace was the next step. However, before the two sides could really begin to iron out a peace treaty a new rumor began to circulate in Italy. A rumor that had a chance to completely upend the war and maybe even upend Rome’s history. What was this rumor? How could it possibly relate to Rome and its war? And how did Rome managed to win the war? Let’s talk about it.
