ROME FOOD TOUR | STREET FOOD IN ITALY
We're in Rome, Italy! In this 3 part series we're exploring Italy's capital city to hunt down the best local food. Rome has a distinct cuisine- one based on nose to tail eating, punchy bold flavours, fresh ingredients prepared simply and they love their street food.
This is our third video from Rome and we're eating street food plus showing you some traditional Roman foods. We start in the Jewish Ghetto and visit one of the most historic pastry shops in the city to sample their ricotta and cherry cake. This kosher bakery is famous for their cake which features creamy ricotta, wild sour cherries and a crumbly pastry. Next up we head to a heritage, hole in the wall spot serving porchetta- a whole pig which is de-boned, seasoned, rubbed with rosemary, rolled and roasted. Er Buchetto is a 6th generation shop which brings its porchetta in from Arricia- a village outside of Rome famous for its porchetta. We eat a porchetta panino- slices of juicy pork stuffed into a crusty roll. It is SENSATIONAL. It's then time for a long lunch of pasta at a neighbourhood trattoria which does the best pasta we ate in our week long stay in Rome. Finally it's off to a Roman pizza joint to sample the classic thin and crispy Roman pizza. What a day of eating! We hope you enjoyed our Rome food tour! #rome #italy #romefoodtour
What we ate and where we ate it:
Ricotta & cherry cake at Pasticceria Boccione, Via del Portico d'Ottavia, 1, 00186 Roma RM. Open 8:00am to 7:30pm, closed Saturday.
Porchetta paninio at Er Buchetto, Via del Viminale, 2F, 00184 Roma RM. Open Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 3:00pm and 5:00pm to 9:0pm and Saturday 10:00am to 2:30pm.
Suppli and pasta at Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto, Via del Casaletto, 45, 00151 Roma RM. Open 12:45pm to 3:00pm and 7:45pm to 11:00pm, closed Wednesday.
Pizza Romana at Pizzeria Ai Marmi, Viale di Trastevere, 53, 00153 Roma RM. Open for dinner only 6:30pm to 2:20am, closed Wednesday.

We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.

Hi. Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed this one. We do use a stick of sorts (need much more than a selfie stick with a huge camera that weighs so much). Our problem would only really be solved with a wider lens but that is very expensive. Our main problem is actually that we're very different heights so getting us both in frame is difficult. Thanks again for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

What a great temptation!! All of this glorious food makes me want to travel deep to Rome one day! Good job Thomas & Sheena. I am impressed with how stabilized the footage looks when Sheena was talking while Thomas while filming. Are you guys using gimbal these days?

Hi Syifa! Thanks very much for checking this one out. We absolutely loved our time in Rome. It’s such an incredible city and the food is unreal. We couldn’t get enough! Not using a gimbal but our camera (GH5) has incredible stabilization. Love it! Doing my best to creep along while walking also to keep it smooth. Thanks again for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀😀

I love the way you guys analyse the taste that’s coming through; because too much of these food-travel vloggers would only say things like “nice, delicious” , “it’s sweet/salty, texture is creamy/crispy.” And that’s about all they can describe. The reason why I love your videos is your elaboration of the ingredients - i’ve never tasted a lot of these food in their authentic places but I can imagine almost exactly how you describe them. Thank you for your videos!!!

Another mouthwatering tour! I swear I can smell the smokiness of the porchetta from here....it looked juicy and succulent, and again, the crunch of the crust of the roll....*drool*. The carbonara with cured pork cheek looks so creamy, and I imagine the coarsely ground pepper add just the right bite to the dish. Fantastic video, guys!

Nice video series. I've never been to Italy and most "Italian" food I've been exposed to has been food that may have been interesting if it wasn't drowned in a mediocre tomato sauce. It looks like there is much more to it, especially in Rome.

Hi Stephen, thanks so much for watching and for commenting! In all our common travel destinations I really enjoy seeing you eat at the same places I've been to knowing we do more food research than most and because there's comfort in familiarity (I even love seeing you guys stroll the same streets I've explored!). BUT...I also feel that perhaps we're getting sucked into the same restos everyone has visited. They're super popular for a reason certainly. I'm quite sure you debate this when you decide where to film. *_carbonara_* - Is it made with cream in New Zealand and/or Australia? 🤔😂 *_fiori di zucca fritti_* - Oh well. The pizza Thomas had came close to what I wanted to see you review this summer. 😀 Fantastic tour of Rome, guys. Beautiful footage and excellent commentary as usual.
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 5 лет назад
Hi Tosh, thanks for watching and commenting! In a perfect world we would be able to spend much longer in the cities we visit and have endless pots of money so that we could eat our way through our 'list' that we've researched AND visit all the places we stumble upon during our wanderings around the city, before we made a final call on what we film. But alas it ain't possible. I also think that we often feel like we're getting sucked into the same restaurants as everyone else but you always have to have some sort of starting point if only to satisfy your curiosity and have a baseline going forward for what a good version of something should be. And then with us filming- there are extra elements to think about like the kitchens and the 'spectacle'. Not sure if I'm making any sense. Hahahaah yes carbonara recipes often call for cream in our part of the world- I remember making it as a kid 😆 So terrible! So glad you enjoyed this series mate. Cheers, Sheena
@tosht2515
@tosht2515 5 лет назад
Yes. I'm faced with the same issues, minus the task of filming obviously. "Satisfy your curiosity" is an excellent point. I've hit up loads of Bourdain spots simply for that reason. And even when research tells me there are clearly better places to spend my time and money, if a restaurant claims to be the original classic something, I'm there. Doesn't always work out. *_carbonara in the U.S._* - For some reason it is often made with PEAS. Not just home cooks but restaurants as well. Have no idea the history but that's the way I made it forever. Haha.
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 5 лет назад
I have added peas to my carbonara in the past too!! 😂 We're the same when it comes to places which made the original/classic dish as well as any places with a really long history- can't help but check it out!

This is such an amazing video of Italian food. The background you give to each dish is so informative for those who don't know the cuisine and country. I like how Thomas also reminds us how the carbonara outside of Italy is normally made from cream whereas it's supposed to just be egg yolks and cheese. I was surprised to learn of this about a year ago. There is a lot of difference between American-/English-style Italian food (quite watered down) and the real thing! The tart looks superb and so satisfying. The burnt crust looks delectable and the inside reminds you of a dense New York cheesecake. The concept of the roast pork bun reminds me of the ubiquitous Chinese braised pork belly bun (sometimes street food but mostly found in restaurants). It must have been an experience of your life 😊
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 5 лет назад
It really was A O! We just fell in love with the cuisine- such hearty food that was totally unique and with such great histories. Often so simple that you could only marvel at how much flavour was in each mouthful 😍 It’s so interesting that use of cream in recipes outside of Italy isn’t it? I wonder if it’s the eggs- that extra caution over making sure eggs are properly cooked is a big deal in a lot of places and perhaps it was thought cream would be better accepted? We’re so happy you enjoyed this series- we would eat at all of these spots again on a return visit- the food was simply magic. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you’re having a lovely weekend A O! Cheers, Sheena
@AO-iv6yr
@AO-iv6yr 5 лет назад
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Thanks for your reply. I can't see any reason to not fall in love with Italian food let alone whilst being in Italy! I agree with how you describe such food with the one word 'magic'. As for the eggs, I think it is both - British (including American, Aussie, NZ) people tend to use much more cream in their cooking (cream in desserts, cream in savoury goods, cream in their Indian food) and as for the 'raw egg' it could be a fear of eating raw eggs but also I think it just really isn't a style of British cooking. 😄
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 5 лет назад
Very true on the cream front A O! Speaking of cream, just tucking into some kaymak (Turkish clotted cream) and honey on bread as I type 😝😋 Cheers, Sheena

@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 3 года назад
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. We’re not wine experts and don’t want to pretend we are. We enjoy a good wine but wouldn’t be able to do it justice by talking about it on camera. That is why we don’t say much about the alcohol we drink during videos. Also we make absolutely no money from producing these videos (to be honest it costs us a heck of a lot) and we just can’t afford to be buying bottles of wine for videos that we know we’re not going to talk about. We put that money towards the food instead. This is a passion project with the aim of showing the best food in the world. Hopefully the budget might be able to also cover amazing wine in the future. Thanks. Thomas 😀

Wow guys another great video from Rome. It was interesting to hear what you said about the Carbonara. As i teenager i had Carbonara for the first time cooked by Italian friends of ours. As an adult id lost contact with them but still cooked it from recipes i had with the cream in it. Although still delicious and my kids loved it, it wasnt ever quite the same Im wondering it she did it like you had there. Now im on a mission to find out. Thanks for another fantastic food journey.

Hi Ms Autumne Jae, thanks for watching. The premise of our channel is to show some of the best food we can find in the cities we visit so a lot of research goes into what stalls and food we film. We don’t just rock up to any old place and film. If something is not to our taste we will say but if it’s no good we usually just put the camera down. No one wants to see us whinging about bad food and many of the businesses we film are mom and pop restaurants or street stalls. We don’t feel it’s our place or fair for us to post a video with a negative experience and potentially affect their business. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Sheena

I love it when foreigners come to Roma and think they know the history well enough to explain it. At least they got out of the historic centre to eat and clarified that Carbonara doesn’t have cream in it. What are they doing eating suppli at a restaurant though? Also, Ai Marmi holds a special place in the heart of Romans, but frankly it’s far from the best even in Trastevere these days.
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 6 месяцев назад
We’re hardly giving a history lesson in our video- just giving some context to our viewers. It was neat to visit Ai Marmi given it’s so beloved but this video is quite a few years old so I’m not surprised if there are spots which have better pizza. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

@@ChasingaPlate, Ok, but the point is, if you are going to speak about the history, even just to give context, you should probably get it right.
