An audacious and magnificent film. This, together with Rossellini's other post-World War II masterpieces (Paisan and Germany Year Zero) made Italian neorealism famous internationally while also reforming cinema's language.

MASTER performace from Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi, two great roman actors, both representing the soul of Rome. (It's not coincidence that Pasolini chose her as Mamma Roma)

Can definitely appreciate Ingrid Bergman's metamorphosis after seeing this film -- with her rigid dull life as a Hollywood actress. In Thilo Wydra's biography "Ingrid Bergman, Ein Leben," he mentions her and her husband's first meeting with Rossellini and his colleagues; these prominent Italian Film industry professionals had only contempt for Hollywood.

One of the great landmarks in Italian cinema. Watching the scene where the Italian priest is cursing the Naxis for thier butchery, you get the feeling that God's anger is coming right through him.

A film that would have had more resonance with a US and UK audience that an Italian one. The portrayal of the Italians in this film is a betrayal of the true spirit of the Italians

A good film, alright, and a decent review. Haven't watched it in a while. Maybe should again soon. My memory is that the most pivotal character in it is essentially the brunette woman standing by (i.e. working with) the Nazi officers. She not only causes the deaths of the men but manipulates the blonde woman to cause it, against her will, by a form of seduction, literally getting away with murder on all fronts. Terrible. And that's what partly inspired the priest's emotional outburst in protest before he too is killed.
