Thracian Captain: "Okay men, for this battle we will try a new technique for the phalanx. Instead of pointing our spears at the enemy we will instead face away from our enemy and back into them. With any luck they will think we are part of their battle line and bypass us so we can stab them in the back." Thracian Soldier: "Uhhh..."

a falx is a long stick with a long blade that is curved towards you its pretty much a mid range axe sword that is meant to cut through bone and armor. all in all if you know how to use it its pretty much death. most sword experts would argue it is one of the best weapons to ever be put on a battle field and it started as a farming tool.
@DarkSnideoftheRainbow

@timlangley7169
@timlangley7169 5 лет назад
@@DarkSnideoftheRainbow there are plenty of established sword names; Kopis, Spartha, Gladius etc. Fun fact though during ancient times it is unlikely that these names were used. It seems to be a modern thing that we classify things. As an example, Gladius means sword. Also the universal 'best' weapon is more likely a spear than any kind of sword. A Falx is useful because it combines the good elements of a sword and a spear.
@zjotheglorious

$5 monopoly money says next title shall be named "Roads in Rhodes" even though roads on single city islands do Diddly-squat unless the port sets up on the other side of the island. also just a question Jon, if you can't be bothered squashing the rebels on your lands, why not bribe them? no need for an army they stop pillaging your trade routes and they disband like any other unit so they should go back into the general populace of the province. not as if you'll come into a lot of money soon...

Holy shit, the second battle near Athens was absolute chaos. And what the hell were the Thracians doing just standing in the middle, plugging a hole in the trees? That stupid move by Thrace of not charging behind the Greek hoplites probably cost Jon half his army. If they'd charged from behind that would have pulled pressure off of his left flank and allowed his archers to pick them off as the Greeks turned away. Whoever Thrace had in charge of their Falxman should've been strung up for being such a fool.

@sonofskeletor33
@sonofskeletor33 5 лет назад
@@frisianmouve Not for fighting the Romans they're not, when it comes to beating Romans Parthia > Armenia. Why? Because elephants absolutely destroy Roman legions, particularly out in the field, and Armenia don't get elephants. A half stack Parthian army featuring war elephants, cataphracts and horse archers can destroy any Roman force the AI will throw at you. Parthia has the worst infantry in the game, but it doesn't matter because you don't need it. Of course if the situation is reversed the Parthians aren't as lethal, as the AI generally doesn't know how to use elephants.
@frisianmouve
@frisianmouve 5 лет назад
@@sonofskeletor33 Oh because of elephants, right. I never used them much, about the only time I did I sent a 20 armoured elephants into Spain as the seleucids just for fun. When I play against them I always shoot fire arrows at them and they almost always rampage. Does the AI know it ought to shoot fire arrows at elephants?
@sonofskeletor33
@sonofskeletor33 5 лет назад
@@frisianmouve In theory the AI does, but because they always re-position their battle lines as you move in they usually get very few shots off, if any. The AI doesn't tend to go with a lot of archers at the best of times anyway. In a defensive siege it's a little more likely they can get some shots off, but again the AI tends to go for infantry-heavy armies. The key to elephants is the charge - unlike cavalry they never take casualties on the charge (except against prepared pike walls). Moreover they get a 'bonus charge' against anything standing in the way between them and their target - so if you approach the Roman infantry line from the side and tell the elephants to charge one of the units in the middle, every single infantry unit in the line will be scattered to the winds. Then you can turn the elephants around and repeat the trick going back the other way. The Roman infantry can only kill elephants with their javelins, or in a bogged down slugging match. So long as you keep your elephants charging from one side to the other, they can't touch you. If you send in your cataphracts as an after shock you can clean up even the most elite Roman infantry surprisingly easily. You just have to close the distance fast and keep on charging - an ancient blitzkrieg.

As far as I can tell, Equites pursuing Militia Cavalry will always inexplicably rout when they eventually catch up, unless the Militia Cavalry has already been massively weakened. I'm not entirely sure why, as Equites are statistically better in every way--except obviously lacking missiles. Even well upgraded Equites I've sent to chase down Militia Cavalry somehow end up getting thoroughly beaten and quickly rout. I don't know if it's a combination of being tired from chasing and having been under missile fire, but they certainly shouldn't lose as badly as they do, if at all.

I usually just build up my army, leave the city, turn taxes way up, way for them to revolt and just exterminate. It's genocidal population control but they're draining my wallet. Plus I think a big reason why is the Senate betrayed me after I declined to suicide my faction leader as he was only 39 years old. So my trade went way down.
@ManyATrueNerd

Well, the thing is, just because it says they're making a loss, they aren't. They just making less money than they should, with costs assigned as a function of city size. No city can make a loss. Sure, you can gut the city and it will tell you it's making a profit, but that's only because the game is now assuming it ought to pay less. But that just puts more pressure elsewhere, and your other cities just got less profitable - while it may look nicer to see every city in profit, you've just made less money overall - low taxes and a city that shows a minus number is almost always more valuable than a tiny city with a high tax rate and a big plus number...

That´s a lot of money you have there Jon. Be careful your generals don´t get corruption traits.

I'll take your word for it. I'm used to Medieval 2 and by the time I get to those sums of money it's late game and I tend to have stopped caring about money and generals are expendable.

A really easy way to grow settlements when you have tons of money is just to buy mercenaries and disband them! They don't take off population when bought but do add to it when disbanded :)

You know, as hilarious and enjoyable as it is to see you walk over everyone and manipulate the game to your will, I think it would also be fun to see you struggle. Maybe like a merc only challenge or something. It would be even more enjoyable to see you work your way out of impossible situations (Ex. Stellaris!)

how do I force the ai into doing a siege battle with my stone walls? like force them into building siege equipment like rams etc. if I can't force them to try and use siege equipment what do you recommend I do then?

why would you destroy the Parthenon Jon?
@Gorbz
@Gorbz 7 лет назад
I started a game as the Seleucids recently, and there's a very good reason why they vanish very quickly - it is because in the first 5 turns Pontus, Armenia, and Egypt all declare war on them, and half their cities have only 3 units defending and no generals.
@JL-uq6dq
@JL-uq6dq 7 лет назад
but if you can weather that storm you end up with one of the best combinations of Phalanxes and chariots and quickly sweep the world! They are one of my favorite none roman factions.

52:35 Jon, the Greek cities and Macedonians are well established and have their economy going relative to the Carthaginians (who aside from Carthage have only tiny crappy settlements that need time and investment to be viable) and Gaul (especially when they fall into the trap of draining their cities to make warbands as the computer is wont to do). Add in the larger cities (Sparta, Thessalonica, Athens when that gets claimed, more large towns than towns throughout both empires) making them less likely to drain away their population and giving them faster access to higher quality troops, and the story of the House of the Brutii having the hardest first wars as punishment for being the "best faction" practically writes itself.

The proper term for being drilled hard in military slang is "Smoked". Which wont usually happen out of boot camp unless your unit completely fucks up. Marching which I think you actually meant is completely different.
