How was Rommel's withdrawal from Africa? Why was he defeated at Alamein? Did he have any chance of setting up any solid defense in Tobruk, Benghazi or Tripoli as requested? What was his plan when he found out about the landing on the coast of Morocco and Algeria?
Next, in this program we are going to solve all these unknowns, to which we will add all the confrontations that he had with his superiors that collided head-on with his approach.

As an Australian, I served 2 tours of duty in the Mid East. I took the time to go to El Alamein. Monty had a much superior force but, as usual, was too cautious to properly exploit his victory. The battle was the first real Allied victory of WW2, so it was greatly exaggerated, of course. More than half of Rommel's Afrika Korps were Italians. Upon visiting the separate Axis and Allied cemeteries (a sad journey), I noted just over 8,000 were killed on either side. On the Axis side half were Italians, half were Germans, showing the Italians also fought with great bravery. The youngest grave I saw was for a 16 year old South African in the Allied cemetery. The sadest one was also located in the Allied cemetery. It recounted the sense of loss of a grieving family far away in Australia for 'Big Bob' (after 40 years I still clearly remember that name), a solider of the gallant Australian 9th Division that fought on the Allied right flank. Respect to 'Big Bob', and to all those other brave young men of all nationalities who died in that battle, and fuck war.

Italians fought desperately when they had Good Officers to lead them : - Folgore Sacrifice at El Alamein. - Italian Torpedo Bombers against supply convoys / Royal Navy. - Italian Frogmen/Submariners. - Italian Sailors & Officers . Ej : Destroyer " Espero " . - " Ariete " Armoured Division Sacrifice at El Alamein. Thanks Sir for your words. One of my uncles was an Italian Army Medic in Africa.

@@giancarlogarlaschi4388And add the Italian merchant marine sailors to your list. They died in large numbers desperately trying to provide Rommel his supplies thanks in large part to the German enigma codes being compromised by the Brits at Bletchley Park and enigma transmitted Italian supply convoys information.

I read a comment written in a book by a captured German soldier during the campaign that he knew Germany had lost the war when he saw how the allies were equipped.

2/3 of the American and British weight of armaments was thrown at Rommel's dozen or so divisions and air cover.... that he did what he did is spectacular.....

Rommel had incredibly dedicated and Heroic Soldiers. It was an imposible task with the resources available ...and with Malta Air Power sinking his supply ships.

The fact is that there was no easy solution. Had Rommel retreated with his entire army to Europe, it would only have been the beginning of his problems. The European coastline is simply too vast for any sort of continuous defense. The Allies would have their choice of targets: they could land in southern France, and Italy or even in Greece. The truth is that the war was doomed for the Axis from the start. Even when they had a spectacular victory, it only brought them one step closer to defeat because the Allies would eventually win by attrition. Rommel needed a spectacular victory every time just to stay in the war. As soon as he lost the initiative, it was all over, and he knew this. When the axis held a static position, the battle did not last long. The Allies could pound them with superior air power and superior numbers and grind them into the desert dust. Rommel did the best he could with the limited resources he had. Frankly, however, his plan of linking up with the German armies in the Caucuses was nothing but a pipe dream.

Did General Rommel bring about this catastrophic retreat upon himself ?? The original plan was if he could take Tobruk, then he was to halt at the Egyptian/Lybian border; while Kesselring took his Luftwaffe forces to prepare for the invasian of Malta-absolutely essential for Rommel to secure a steady, secure supply line. INSTEAD, after capturing Tobruk, he appealed to Hitler to keep going to Cairo; this despite vociferous objections from the Italian High Command, the German Navy, and perhaps Kesselring too. Hitler having no faith in the Italian Navy to show up for the invasion of Malta, was only too glad to accede to Rommel's request to invade Egypt. What was the result ? When Rommel attacked the El-Alamein line in July 1942 he had only 2000 exhausted infantry, 26 tanks, and no air-cover. This against the British Army which had 10 days to prepare a defensive line at El-Alamein and had air cover. Who do you think was going to win that battle ? The defeat at El-Alamein lies solely at the feet of both Hitler AND Rommel. The original plan of taking Malta after the capture of Tobruk-and then, and only then of advancing into Egypt should have been followed.

You Sir, put it perfectly. The simple fact is, Rommel got carried away with his success, and failed to see the bigger picture. Brilliant tactician but not so great strategist. The promotion to Field Marshall was above his level of competence.

If Operation Hercules was not canceled due to Rommel's advance into, then Sir, you tell me why it was ? Perhaps you may wish to read David Irving's, "Hitler's War". You may have a different opinion on the comment, you posted on this forum.
@francispoldiak7948
@francispoldiak7948 2 года назад
@@robertleache3450 You cannot claim that Rommel foolishly advanced into Egypt with minimal resources and then claim those resources could have been put to better use somewhere else. His 'underfunded' advance need to have had no impact on Hercules and if that is the official reason for canceling it I suspect this is only a smokescreen to avoid what would have been a very difficult task. As for Irving's 'Hitler's War' I have read it and walked away convinced this man is simply a Hitler supporter...

Rommel never really got his reinforcements in NA during 1942. His opponent got steady flow of tanks and infantry. Only after Germans retreated all the way back to Tunisia Hitler poured divisions into NA. By that time the balance had shifted already, Torch happened, now there was even more ships and airplanes to disrupt supply lines into NA and on top of it, they lost an entire army in Stalingrad. Germans lost 2500 aircraft over Tunisia in first 6 months of 1943. You go figure.

Hi, I believe I heard recently that Rommel sent one of his staff, perhaps his chief of staff, to meet with Hitler in 1943 to explain the desperate situation and need for withdrawal. I'm trying to learn the name of the officer Rommel sent to make a presentation to Hitler. does anyone know? Thank you!

Malta put a huge dent into Rommel's logistics
@AykutDans
@AykutDans 4 месяца назад
Rommel was outnumbered by 2 to 1 in 1942. That's what ultimately led to his failure. His reinforcements arrived 8 months too late, just to get capitulated in Tunisia. This again shows the military brilliance of Hitler, only in the brink of defeat he sent equipment to be lost in NA.

Rommel had no choice his logistics were far overstretched. However he should have gone to Tunisia from the beginning and not try to capture Egypt which was unachievable anyway with poor logistics. They forgot that you cannot live off the desert like you do in Russia ot Ukraine.

Ther Germans were just spread too thin fighting on too many fronts to be effective after the allies beagn catching up in personnel, supplies and armnaments. A withdrawl to Germany may have been the better soultion in late 42.

Rommel found out what it was like trying to operate way beyond the resources of his supply chain. His original success against the British was due to the same difficulty affecting 8th Army's operations. His experience in France led him to believe that he could work miracles.

I wouldn't. Call that a contribution its a opinion, Rommel could have chosen to support the attack against Malta or to go for the attack against Egypt. To call him a strategy moron its a blindmans statement . if he was given the resources he needed seizing the Suez would have been a far reaching victory for the axis .

@@pyrrhus17 Old saying: 'Bad generals study tactics, good generals study logistics'. It's common knowledge Rommel hated logistics and was bored by them. Much more fun dealing with tactics so he left the logistical side of things to his Chief of Staff usually. Mostly well served but it did mean that there was no coherent strategy on his supply situation and a lot of adhoc arrangements. Came back to bite him in the butt more than once.

A great corps commander in the desert for sure, but he failed miserably as an Army Commander in Normandy. Von Runstedt was right. Building fixed defences all along Europe's coastline was a waste of time and valuable resources. A worthy military maximum states: 'He who tries to defend everything, defends nothing'. Finally, Rommel was a traitor to his sacret soldier's oath to be loyal to Hitler. If he didn't want to abide by it he should have got the hell out of the military rather than break his soldier's oath.
