An often overlooked favourite of the RH&DR fleet, No11 "Black Prince" has always proved popular with enthusiasts and members of the public alike; gaining something of a cult following for its unique nature among its British outline counterparts. As such, its return to steam has been highly anticipated, drawing a crowd to witness the locomotive back in service following an overhaul.
Built in 1937 by Krupp, the locomotive was one of only three produced for a trade fair in Dusseldorf. While the other two subsequently found homes in the UK, "Fleissiges Leischen" (name carried at the time, translates to "Busy Lizzy" in English) was retained by the owners on sentimental grounds until 1976, when it was offered for sale to the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Some modifications were carried out to bring the locomotive in-line with RH&DR standards, and an identity was adorned to the pacific; No11 "Black Prince" - a name previously carried by No10 until 1948. This most recent overhaul started in 2019, with funding partly provided by the RH&DR Association, and carried out by John Fowler Engineering in Cumbria. On the completion of the overhaul, a programme of running-in trials were undertaken on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway before returning to RH&DR metals.
The timetable in use for the day was a modified version of the railways' Orange timetable, with some additional services included. Shouldering the German's return, a strong showing from the RH&DR fleet was showcased throughout the day, with a total of 6 locomotives in service which featured a variety of the designs based on the line. In true Romney style, the day was rounded off with a triple-headed run from New Romney to Dungeness and back.
