When I saw Kirk live, he was the most super human musician I ever saw-boundless energy. The only other performers I saw who were on his level were players like Cecil Taylor (and his group), McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman, Sam Rivers, and Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane. He was quite staggering to experience live. I was very lucky to see him perform.

Awesome…I saw Roland Kirk in Montreal…at a little Club downtown… I was around 16…and I beg the doorman to let me in… I sat right in front of him…while he was up on that little stage… I still have the paper add that the show was advertising, it’s in my diary!! What a night !! 🧡Montreal was the best for music …👍🎺🎷🎼

Thank you for the great stories, Mr. Carter! I was wondering if you have any good memories of working with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis? I’ve always been curious if you had ever sat in with the big band back in the 60s-70s

I subbed for r.davis a couple of times and as usual, really enjoyed playing with the band, and especially Mel Lewis.
