Actually the press got roasted here you fricken stump. Your attention span equals the limit of your intellect on this one. The president took a few mild jabs as is tradition, but the press got shamed the entire time
@Vera Didenko LOL, sorry, Wisconsin. Since I don't watch football I only ever hear about either state when a mega snow storm kills a bunch of the poor saps that live there. My bad.
@@edstimator1 If you mean regurgitating his same old word-salad, then suuuure. He speaks to his base's intelligence level. Maybe that is why you can't understand a learned, historical accounting.
@D Gray It is true though. They are the crowd who will clap and cheer for anything. It's just sad that they are enabling a known narcissist and con-man by doing so. That 30 something % of Americans can keep their demagoguery, the rest of us will be looking for a way to keep them from running us all off a cliff.
I felt the same. As I marveled at his historical prowess, i felt dismayed at the sour faces of the audience, mostly the women. My delight was not dowsed when I mused they are most likely upset that he was ruining their BUZZ……
From UK. Never knew these existed. Saw Stephen Colbert 2006, was amazed that it happened. Then RU-vid led me to Hasan Minhaj 2017, it was moving - I couldn't believe these things were a regular occurrence. Then Michelle Wolf 2018, was amazed by the courage. Disappointed when I read that they did stop comedians appearing, but this was excellent. Inspiring. Good luck this November, everyone in America. Your democracy appears to be stronger than ours at the moment. Hopefully we can gain some inspiration from you.
I'm from Germany... I lived in the states before I permanently moved here when I was 17. I didn't even know these things existed either🙈😂. I just got done watching Hasan's roast after Obama's. These are great
Great choice WHCA! Thank you, Mr. Chernow! We desperately needed this brilliant speech! Please don't let this admin. bully you into banning historians from speaking at the WHCD too.
First time I’ve ever seen anyone get multiple standing ovations during a speech. Well-deserved. That one quote - ‘if we don’t have the truth, we can’t have an honest disagreement’ - really highlights the dangerous divisiveness of this administration & leadership. Here we are doubting fact harder than ever, and we see now just how split and stubborn everyone is in their beliefs. And to think I almost passed up this gem...
They got a historian and comedian at the dinner, very entertaining and informative. You can't help but reference this administration, some folks weren't very happy about it.
Me too! He sure made Trump look even MORE energetic and charismatic when he was delivering that Brilliant and uplifting speech at that HUUUUUGE rally in Minnesota.
@Vera Didenko No, it really was a brilliant speech at a packed to the gills stadium and it was very uplifting. Full of hope for the future of America however compared to THIS anything would have looked pretty damned good. Cuzz this whole event kida sucked balls. Donchya think?
@Vera Didenko It's a troll. Just doing what trolls do and trying to get a rise out of anyone they can, because that's how they get through their days apparently. The best thing to do is ignore them altogether, hence the saying "Don't feed the trolls."
These Trump supporters are so far detached from reality they think down is up. They are even more delusional than their Dear Leader. I would laugh but the truth is they really need to get help.
@@richarddarlington1139 Yeah, and pretty much anyone else outside of Hollywood and the press. You guys are so much smarter and woked than the rest of us unwashed millions that think you're all just a bunch of leftist propagadists
I love this speech. Informative, accurate, and a strikingly noble attack on those who make the media look like the enemy when the person sitting in the WH is anything but an advocate of the American people.
Fox news watcher much? You do know Actual Journalists Do report the news and that's why the Donald hates them. Seems a little enlightenment is in order.
Objectify and factual reporting are essential to a journalist. It seems honesty and courage are rare in any politician and so called journalist. An example of each comes to mind. Tulsi Gabbard and Julian Assange. Name all the persons in the dining room with those qualities and we have a start at responsible leadership.
King Tangerine can't tell a joke or take a joke - he just would have turned this into a campaign rally (lock her up!). All the previous presidents, Democrat or Republican, could actually tell and take a joke. George the younger and Barack were naturals at this type of stuff.
It's great to have a thoughtful and quite knowledge-d speaker to speak about Journalistic standards over the years, from Historic perspective. Those days Journalists had decency, decorum and standards and were NOT clamoring for the ratings and click-bait culture. The present irony is this pageantry with salinity towards president can set up a road map for making incorrect Historical assessments into the future. Now a days every congressmen / congresswomen and Journalist from a tom-dick-and-harry new paper or TV channel thinks, they are above president and act and behave like super-presidents(without even winning a party nomination for presidency), that is the reason Objective journalism is dead long time ago. If a president decided to NOT attend Correspondents dinner, and yet delivered a speech elsewhere about his administrations achievements at the exact same time, speaks volumes of the fallen-standards of the 4th estate, which we should not ignore either !!!
What a great speech! But l think Chernow is too cerebral for the likes of Coumo, Lemon, Stelter snd Cooper. These guys'll find Michelle Wolf easier to understand.
Not sure but I saw a lot of frowns and disapproving looks from people I did not recognize but assumed they were Foxers. And who were those two morons in the back wearing USA trucker hats?
I almost didn't watch because he wasn't a comedian. I'm glad I did. Very informative, but not boring! Had some great jabs in there and laughs. I thought he was great!
Props to Ron Chernow for doing his best under the current administration. He still managed to piss off any Republicans in the audience. An intellectual wit. Next year make it Jon Meacham. BTW time to change a diaper.
@WTF Again? Democrats don't care about the constitution. That's why they're trying to take all of our guns, and stop our free speech. They murder newborns, and physically attack those that disagree, then the biased media outlets show people like you the parts that suit their narrative in an attempt to keep you dumbed down enough to be easily enslaved if they ever get their way. The second civil war is against you; you should really consider which side you're on.
I'm sure that Trump had Mr. Chernow booked instead of a comedian so he wouldn't get burned.... Well THAT backfired... Instead of a comedian pointing out what an idiot Trump is, a well respected historian did.. Well done Mr. Chernow!!!!
Not the speech we wanted but the speech we needed. In an era where uncertainty abounds, this poignant and contextual speech put the perfect pin in this ridiculous month
@Cheryl Moss Writing in all capital is supposed to mean shouting and my father taught me that people who shout are never right. So safe your anger for those who want to mirror it. I safe my energy for better things, like for example enduring the current occupant of the WH. edit: spelling
did you "safe yourself" from grammar school too? Maybe your father should have "teached you" to respect the office of the presidency, whom a quarter billion people voted to fill. Sorry you have to "endure" more money on your paycheck, It must be hard for you. Guess you don't have a job, or you would've noticed. "Mirrow" that.. Whatever that means
fantastic! As a dutchman, I love all those historic details and anecdotes, told with great eloquence, relativism and wit! And all very relevant to today's state of American democracy. Thank you mr Chernow!
@Etb Etb Sure not everyone has the same humor. So repeating the same theme and hinting to it as being humor is like explaining a joke which wasn't funny to begin with. Sometimes it is better to take a jab and let it go, than to reinforce others believe that you are bad at a thing.
A sober yet humorous accounting of the American practice of presidents and politicians rising above temporary ego in favor of larger ideals. "Such presidential eloquence, shall we ever hear it's like again?"
Pete Buttigieg is the Best Candidate Running for President . An Educated, Veteran who speaks 7 languages including Fluent English ! Trump wouldn't stand a chance against him with his below 3rd grade (Lower than an 8 year old's) vocabulary .The Debates would be …...Wow !
to hell with eloquence, swag, and a cool haircut. It hasn't done crap for anybody. I'm into action now, and promises kept. So I'm going Donald Trump 2020. He's practically a democrat if you look at his latest bills.
@@fuzzeek78 hahahahahaha which promises kept? Tax cuts for the 1%! Wall paid for by Mexico? Not built. Great renaissance of manufacturing and coal jobs? Nope. Immigration reduced? No. But children separated from their parents and put in cages? Maybe I missed that promise, but if he made it, yes, that is another promise kept. But not one that anyone with a heart or a brain was happy about.
@@shydreamguyman4098 But a prominent New-Yorker with a billion dollars of worth has access to every possible avenue to enhance his personality each time, he appears in the public domain. Being an erudite doesn't guarantee winning the party nomination, let alone winning the final election. Surely, Pete Buttigieg if elected would bring a diverse array of skills to the Capitol . Time will aid Mr. Buttigieg towards gathering enough mass to battle party- heavyweights to garner the presidential nomination.
This also goes down in my current history of the best Correspondents dinner during my lifetime. While I love the comedians and they do a GREAT job... this was a nice change of pace. My brain feels challenged and in awe of this man. Thank you.
Because our country is, in fact, being tested, for the first time as an adult I have re-read The Constitution. In the last two years, I've never learned so much about legal terms and how the government works!
@@thecrone7964 For reasons that Rump has pointed out, we need to make a few (many?) changes to our educational system as well as our nominations for public office. Background checks, verification of educational checks, drug testing, etc. In other words, the same things Walmart checks for its cashiers!
Charlane Lord, Reading the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble and the Constitution should be already be required in public schools. We also need a Congress that will rein in these unconsitutional DOJ rules like "a sitting president can't be indicted." Now, not only can they not indict a president, they can't say he did anything wrong because there's no court case for defense. Candidates for public office should also be required to submit ten years of taxes for public scrutiny. Did you know that in order to get a government grant for college, you have to allow a ten year audit of your taxes?
@@jannmutube I am pretty sure I read it somewhere along the way but how many of us remember things from 5th or 6th grade? I have now happily restored my memory. It's free to download. Can someone get the president to read it?
@@charlenelord6860, The original Constitution isn't that long, no reason it shouldn't be included in school texts that students buy. Individual-1 just needs to go to prison. He doesn't want to read the Constitution. One of his cronies, Sam Nunberg , already tried to read it to him and he told him to forget it. Trump's statement during the 2016 campaign, that he "could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it", shows that he knows the difference between right and wrong but will choose criminal behavior if he thinks he can get away with it.
At first I was sad not to have a comedian this year because I have the tradition for a few years now to stay up late at night to watch the WHCD (French here addicted to American politics) but this was a great speech, the one the rest of the world need to start having a little bit of faith in the USA again. Congratulation to Mark Chernow.
@@stevekeys262 yeah again, you wouldn't imagin how damaged our vision of America is. It's even worst in Germany where I go a couple times a week since I live at the border.
Trump is trying to stop the fall of the west, how many 1000 year old churches have to burn down before you realize this. Stop watching the news, start going outside, but careful not to go to the Muslim no go zones in Paris don't want you to get hurt.
Mind boggling how successful the media spin was on it. Somehow calling Sarah a liar, which shes now admitted in the Mueller Report, meant she was making fun of her appearance. Even if she did make fun of her appearance why a comedian is held to higher standards than the president is beyond me.
There's been many others who spoke to the same topics she did (i.e. Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers, almost anyone else)with jokes and subject matter that wasn't from the gutter. She obviously was speaking to the lowest, knuckle dragging, common denominator of the American public. They don't have the cognitive ability to understand anything without it being presented in the wording she used. One can speak the truth without crawling out of a sewer to do so.
Ron Chernow is proof that the White House Correspondent's Dinner can have a funny speaker with class who doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator. Bravo!
@@edstimator1 Probably too many big words and concepts for you to handle. I know you must be lonely over there but it's alright kid, I'm sure you'll meet a nice girl someday. You will have to go outside into the real world first of course..

25:51 the most reluctant standing ovation I have ever seen. I must admit how much I miss Michelle Wolf. She hit it so far out of the park, her jokes reshaped the genre. Ron Chernow did an admirable job. That said, I prefer jackass to admirable. #WHCD
I really enjoyed this speech and I love the message. I look forward to the day when we get back to a place of respect and honor in our Government. Of course for that to happen we need an respectable honorable person in the White House.
We didn't get what we wanted. We want a black female gay Hebrew handicap muslim transsexual immigrant abortionist, and will stop for nothing short of that. Your comment is racist

@Noiseless Sounds Apparently (based on ratings) I hold a majority in that opinion by a huuuuge margin. Don't know if you've noticed (probably not) but the liberal press and talk shows have been absolutely SUCKING in the ratings. Not everyone in America wants to be lectured on how "woked" a person is if they believe in infanticide, or that the world will end in twelve years, or that it makes sense to have open borders and giving sixteen year olds the vote. Are you fucking kidding me? And to top all that off you think this was "funny"??? OMG!
Great speech. Poor camerawork. When talking about the San Diego Synagoge shooting commited by a Christian, the camera quickly shows a Muslim women sitting in the crowd. Very disturbing.
I'm a french guy so I'm not sure but I think she is the woman that was fired from her job for refusing to swear that she wouldn't boycott Israel (completely independant from her job btw) and won that settlement in court that week. I was really disturbed by the cameraman too especially considering the fact that the attack was perpetrated by a 19 old white guy who tried to Arson a Mosque too some time ago. Even if it was an attack perpetrated by someone calling himself muslim there was no reason to do that.
@D Gray lul the right don't see color and are not racists at all. They talk about a terror attack and exactly at the same time the cameraman for the only time in 29 minute zoom on the hijab girl, what a coincidence.

Phenomenal. And most etertaining when he is the historian, and doesn't try too hard to be funny. There are no words for the contrast between past presidents and 45.
