Of course, completely respectable opinion! But I mostly focus on the sound on my channel. In fact I have some demos of really affordable ones that are really good as well. Thanks for your comment!
Hi Federico, I just watched your videos on the Ron Ellis 64S Strat pickups, then this video with the 50/60 pickups. Do you have a preference between the two? If you could only own one of the two sets, which would it be? Thanks!
I own the 50/60s set. It just adapts better to my playing and the sound I like. The 64 is cool as well but it was kinda too bright in my rig. But both sets are great!
Funny, how I have a 61 faded custom shop strat with 50/60 Ron Ellis too, and I can tell the sound is similar, minus the voicing of the two rock (I play a Ceriatone ots)
That seems to be the price today, yes. The fat only applies to the bridge. Overwound. However nowadays there is no fat vs regular. All sets come stock with a fat bridge.
@@argbluesman thanks for your helpful reply. But can you tell me, are the second and fourth positions hum cancelling? As I actually don't want that because I want them to produce the same consistent amount of noise and then take care of it all with heavy shielding, and maybe a dummy coil or Dave Ulbrick's NRS system, if either of those do not actually affect tone. What are your favorite ways to deal with noise?
@@rowanmurphy5239 yes. The middle pickup is rwrp. I do not look for ways to reduce noise as they are all unnatural and affect the final tone. I accept that single coils are a bit noisy. And live with that.
@@argbluesman do you shield to bleed off the EMI to ground? That doesn't sound like it would negatively impact the tone to me, it seems like it would just get rid of the electromagnetic interference. Also, I know it's a bit of an expensive experiment, but the noise reduction system is, by all accounts I've come across, incredible and doesn't affect the tone in any noticeable way and you can bypass it as well. So with the push of a button you could be back to pure single coil, but if it's super noisy because of the different equipment and the power system in the building or the lights or, you know the variables, you can just turn it on and have that noise gone if it's absolutely unplayable. I wonder would Ron wind me a set that is not reverse wound.
Hey man, Quick question. I currently have a set of Mark Foley ‘64 Strat pickups and fine they are quite compressed and Focused in the high mids. Would you say this is the same case for these Ron Ellis pick ups here? Great playing by the way!
Well, the set you have is focused like you say because they are made with plain enamel wire, I imagine, since you say they are 64s. That’s typical of mid 60s pickups. The 50/60 is a mix of stuff from both eras. But the neck and middle are sound with heavy formvar and a mix of alnico 3 and 5. The bridge is an overwound plain enamel. It’s fat sounding, round, warm, punchy where appropriate and woody also. It has that classic hair of the 50s and early 60d pickups.
Thanks! The reason why I didn't like those is because I don't like to sound like others. That set sounds too much like SRV. That's the objective, of course. But not for me.
@@rowanmurphy5239 sure, mine are brand new in box and I just have not gotten around to installing them. You can message me on Instagram at the same handle.
Of course. It’s a matter of taste man. All hype aside, if they work, they work. If they don’t, they don’t. I apply that approach to all gear. Use what works 👍 thanks for your comment!
Sounds great, what a tone! Man you can really dial in that two rock, they can be a bit tricky with how wide the tone controls can take you- especially how they interact with the gain control. It would be cool to see a video regarding your amp settings
Thanks. Honestly settings don’t matter man. If you see my settings, it will not help you. We play differently, we have different gear, different touch. If you see my channel, I sound the same regardless of amp, pickups, pedals or settings. To me the key is to simply listen. Not to copy what anyone else is doing because it doesn’t work. I don’t even know my settings. I just adjust with my ear. Just take the time to listen. I honestly never found a two rock hard to dial. But take the time to sit down and listen.
Sorry, what do you mean by front and center half tones? I set my pickups with my ears really. I have no idea about exact measurements, nor do I follow specific measurements as all guitars and pickups are different.
@@argbluesman Sorry. That meant position 4. Only position 4 feels hard to play. As you replied, I'll continue to set it up a bit more with ears. Thank you.
For all you bedroom guitar players out there just put together a Fifteen Thousand dollar rig and you too can sound like this. This is kind of a ridiculous review. You do play really well and you sound great.
The tone of your heroes does not lie in the pickups… it’s the sum of everything, and most importantly, his hands. That’s why Mayer and every player sounds like themselves with any guitar and any pickups. I have no idea what pickups Mayer has in his 64. But these pickups are very reminiscent to the sound of his black Strat if you have a good resonant guitar.
@@jovanhalim8408all pickups are similar man. The pickup is not 100% responsible for the tone. Klein makes amazing pickups and their prices are very reasonable. If you like that kind of scooped sound, try their jazzy cats. Not the same but it’s that vibe.
@@jovanhalim8408Hi, I have a Strat with the custom shop fat 50’s and one with these Ron Ellis pickups. To be honest, the differences between pickups is a little hard to really hear mostly, but I can say that the Fat 50s play much the same to me as the Ron Ellis pickups. They are not inexpensive but they are less expensive than the Ron Ellis. The thing I hear compared to other strats is really that these pickups are not too bright so if you like that you might like the Fenders too. Good luck!
So I went to google translate. You said this is a meaningless video? I appreciate your views. But I would also appreciate some explanation as to why you think that, and what you would change. It is strange because Ron Ellis himself wrote me an email to say thanks. But anyway of course we’re all different… Thanks!
@@KEZOME Demos are meant to demonstrate how something sounds. Not to compare it with anything else. In that case, it should be a comparison. Which this is not. This is a demo, as stated in the title. Thanks.
I’m sick of it as well. But it is what it is unfortunately, and 99% of people are looking for that. Although this set can do a lot of things (like any pickup). And the John Mayer cliche can be achieved with any 60s pickups. As any other Strat sound…
I have both! The JM Rolph set is strictly vintage. The 50/60 is a mix of great things, including the plain enamel overwound bridge. I really like both. And may others as well! Many great winders.
