I remember seeing this, watched EVERY flyers game. This was so great! My last trip to ottawa, crossed over the border and went to the museum of civilization again. They were featuring a 'hockey's first" exhibit. Hextall was featured in the programming. Was in tears.. felt so great to see this honored! Flyers fan what can I say? 💛🖤💚💚💚

I attended the Flyers next home game after Hextall’s first goal and I’ll never forget him being presented a new car at center ice before faceoff as a gift for this accomplishment!

No way Hextall is a HOF goalie. Hockey's HOF is too easy to get in It is the Hall of Good instead of the Hall of Great. MLB does it right by limiting it to the best of the best.

Broduer is one of the best goaltenders in history, no doubt, but there are many who arguably could be considered the best. Gump Worsley. Terry Sawchuck. Glenn Hall, Ken Dryden. Billy Smith is considered by many, if not most, to be the best money goalie of all time! And how about Dominic Hassick?! An argument can be made for each of them. I'd say they're all great, and leave it at that!

I was so pissed when Roy in 99 came within feet of doing that...but time ran out. Puck went in but was just outside the crease when the buzzer went off.

Wow this day in history 33 years ago. It was no surprise at all. Everyone was always saying for 2 years prior that he has a better shot then most players in the league. The commentaries and news reports and of course the fans like me and especially in Philadelphia all said he was gonna score a goal on an empty net in his future. Everyone was saying it was just a matter of time and that Tuesday night he finally nailed it. It was still a thrill to see in the reels on the news that night. Awesome still to this day. Love it !

Huh? Hextall wasnt even in the NHL 2 years prior to this goal. HEXTALL scored this goal in his 2nd year in the league.

Well, Billy Smith was credited with a goal 8 years earlier. He did not shoot the puck like Hextall did though.

Didn't Billy Smith get credited with a goal while he was with the Islanders several years before this? If memory serves me right, Smith didn't shoot the puck, he was the last Islander to touch the puck before it was put in the opponent's own goal.

There are actually 12 different goalies who have scored a total of 15 goals! 8 of them were by the goalie shooting it in himself and 7 by the other team scoring in their own net! Brodeur has three in his career(1 by shooting it and 2 by the other team scoring in their own net)

@@TiazaLynn There is a difference. Smith did not shoot the puck into the opposing net. He was only credited because he was the last Islander to touch the puck, before Rob Ramage passed it back into his own net. Smith got credited with a goal due to a technicality on the rule book

I think the advent of the trapizoid was ridiculous. It should be removed. To me a good puck handling goaltender is akin to a good hitting pitcher in baseball! You're punishing someone because they have skills most don't.

Smith didnt properly score the goal, he was credited with it for being the last player to touch the puck, but it was a player from the opposing team that scored in their own goal. Hextall was the first to properly shoot and score.

Bruh, you have any idea how hard it is to perfect a shot with a big goal stick? Not to mention doing it against forecheckers? Or risking missing the net and icing the puck, and getting a faceoff back in your zone? Or risking turning over the puck? Use your head
