I put Altman as the same level as Lynch because he always brought the best of his castings, this film was not the exception and that's why stood as one of the best directorial works of 2001. I mean look at Mirren's and Smith's works
@@michaelnelson1128 It’s cuz his movies are too weird to appeal to a broader audience. Very few of us STAN David Lynch but his fans are all hardcore fans which I admire because it shows that while his artistic vision doesn’t appeal to broader audiences, it still resonates with some of us.
Robert Altman: directs an immaculate period drama, the kind of film the Oscars love, that is a perfect bookend to a legendary career. David Lynch: After 25 years of innovation, Lynch somehow outdoes himself with an unforgettable and beautifully disturbing masterpiece. Oscars: Let's give it to Ron
He should have won for Apollo 13, when he didn’t even get a nomination even though he had won the Directors Guild award. Coincidentally it was Mel Gibson who won that year for Braveheart and who was being directed by Ron Howard at the time of the ceremony in the film Ransom, so I suppose things came full circle with Gibson presenting him the Oscar. 😏
A Beautiful Mind broke down so much stigma about mental illness, and in such a thoughtful way. Howard steered the film, and I didn't know it was filmed sequentially. That explains a lot--we arrive at the climax the same way the filmmakers did.
Because.... most times, the director of "Best Picture" wins for Best Director. The movie was nothing short of brilliant, as was Cinderella Man. The real injustice here was that Russell Crowe didn't win Best Actor for it, which is probably in the top 5 acting performances of all time. He was THE reason it won, and why Ron won. But that's Hollywood, and they don't always do the right thing.
Richard Black they edited out a portion of his acceptance speech cause he recited a poem and it got copyrighted! Crowe, unaware of the matter, called them up and started yelling and ranting about how that speech was a special moment he dedicated to someone! They explained themselves, but at that point the damage was done! That was one of the first incidents where the general public found out that Crowe has some SERIOUS anger issues! Thus causing Academy voters to change their mind last minute! I mean he's the ONLY actor to have won the Critic's choice, golden globe, SAG, and the Bafta without winning the Oscar! He was a shoe in for his second consecutive Oscar, but he had to kill it for himself! Oh well, Washington gave a bad ass performance worthy of that Oscar as well!
No one could've 100% understood it either. No one could've stood Gosford Park and Black Hawk Down. Those movies lacked anything other than philosophy and visuals. A Beautiful Mind was made for everyone, despite being a biographical drama and not a self involved snoozefest.
While I agree that Ron Howard is a great director, a beautiful mind was an actor's movie (Like Howard says in his speech). On the other hand, Black Hawk Down in my opinion, is the definition of a director's movie (even though it does have great acting in it). Balancing those battle scenes with cohesive emotion while at the same time making you FEEL like you're actually witnessing a real war is not a lot directors are able to do. Ridley Scott did that. And he deserved the oscar for it.
I remember this being an upset but I liked A Beautiful mind cause it paved the way for other biopics about mathematicians and physics. Look at Oppenheimer now. There was a big risk there it probably got a lot of kids interested in mathematics. That being said David Lynch should’ve won.
IDK why a lot of people is complaining about Ron Howard getting an Oscar. A Beautiful Mind is a great movie although I will say Mullholland Drive is better but A Beautiful Mind is equally great.
Did David Lynch not win because of what “Mullholland Drive allegedly cleverly and surreptitiously, revealed about the continued existence and dangers of the Hollywood casting couch? Is that why Robert Altman allegedly whispered to him when they lost the Best Director Oscar, “It’s better this way.”? I would love anyone’s thoughts or comments.🎬❤️🎬
This was awful! The oscar should have gone to Robert Altman or to David Lynch. They didn't just deserve it for the single movie, but for all their career. But you know... it's Hollywood. Despite that it was quite a good year.
+Jacob Duran To be fair, I haven't watch Braveheart. I heard it's good, but I never got around to watching it. I will say this though, this was not the movie Ron Howard should've won best director.
+Jacob Duran Don't get me wrong, I love Ron Howard's work. I find Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and Rush phenomenal, but he had stiff competition. Peter Jackson, David Lynch, and Robert Altman did a great job with their own movies. So I thought about it, and giving Ron Howard best director for Apollo 13, and Robert Altman for Gosford Park would've been the best compromise for me.
Best Director: Ron Howard, "A Beautiful Mind" Steven Spielberg, "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" Peter Jackson, "The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings"*(WINNER) Baz Lurhmann, "Moulin Rouge!" David Lynch, "Mulholland Drive"
Ron Howard beating Altman, Jackson, Lynch and Ridley Scott for a Best Director award on any level (especially for ABM) may be the most infuriating, WTF decision, to me, in Academy history. Howard was basically rewarded because he was a consistent moneymaker and the fact that he wasn't an outsider that, to different degrees, all his fellow nominees were.
Russell Crowe got robbed of the best actor award this year because he talked bad about the academy the year before after he won for Gladiator. I believe they gave it to Denzel instead.
no offence to David Lynch but it would have been controversial if he had won because that was the films only nomination. Personally I would have given it to Robert Altman or Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge!
I hate to say this, but perhaps the reason that Ron Howard's films are the way they are, which is to say doll and predictable and all coming from some very conventional place of received ideas, may have something to do with how he is as a person, such a fine decent play her an admirable person great friend good father and all that. Lyndon Johnson once added to a young Hubert Humphrey when Humphrey was a Firebrand senator from Minnesota and just coming up and Johnson had taken him under his wing to forge the Democratic north-south Alliance, Johnson told him when Humphrey told him he had to leave to get home for his daughter's school play or something like that, " Hubert you're just going to have to decide whether you want to be powerful politician go get something accomplished or if you're going to be a good daddy. And Ron Howard is definitely a good daddy, but his films definitely feel like he leaves his job and gets home to his wife and kids and it doesn't bother him at all . he's not wacko and there is just not enough id in the movie at all
@@aqualcunopiaceclassico3201 Typical of you entitled stans who see one weird film and think Lynch is so revolutionary in that area. Am glad the voters didn't dikride the eccentric, pompous fellas.
@@vb8428 Yeah, that's like your opinion man. Although Altman was nominated for one of his lesser works, giving him the award would've made up for the times he lost for Nashville, Mash, The Player and Short Cuts. Mulholland Dr is an excellent film, one of the finest films of the 2000's. Not looking for a debate, but as the video shows, Altman and Lynch rushed to each other and it was beautiful.
@@pedrobarragan746 They look like whiny losers who can't be happy for another guy who was also snubbed before. And don't be listing his films as if we don't know them, as if they're the greatest ever.
In the future, Academy will have to answer for the fact that Lynch and Altman never got an Oscar. They both deserved it this year, even though I would have voted for Lynch.
óli austfjörð Well, he never announced his retirement, so he might come back someday. But I can't really see him winning an Oscar, his moviescreate a lot of rejection by the public, and that counts a lot.
Kind of a shame to see people bash Howard so much. I believe he is a talented, visionary director, who directed an extraordinary film in A Beautiful Mind. And his comments are some of the kindest and most selfless I’ve seen at the Oscars.
The Howards raised two wonderful sons, Ron and Clint. Ron and Cheryl have been married a long time, great family they raised, too. To tell this story, and break some of the stigma of mental illness down in this most visible way, is an achievement Ron can always be proud of.
@@therealpotpol4027 I watched this movie and I watched heck lots of movies. And also I have different kinds of minds that means that in daily life I can think like an artist, engineer, entrepreneur, scientist and inventor. Long story short, I have more experience of life most of the people in total. And I can say that, even A Beautiful Mind is a better movie. Maybe, you relate Mullholand Drive to your life story more or something else. But for me its not Mullholand Drive. Actually I cannot say that ...... film is the greatest because every movie tells a different story, filmed in different times by different actors.
I personally think it's HILARIOUS and RIDICULOUS that Ron Howard won a Directing Oscar over Robert Altman, David Lynch, Peter Jackson and Ridley Scott. All four directors pretty much superior to him in almost every way.
The most insane oscar win ever. How the hell does Ron Howard win this category on a list with Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Robert Altman, and Peter Jackson?
