Just as Earl Scruggs set the standard for bluegrass banjo during his tenure with Lester Flatt, the fiddlers who worked with Lester and Earl in The Foggy Mountain Boys did the same during the band's 20 year tenure. Ron Stewart, fiddler with The Boxcars and a go-to session player, has made a life's history of this music, and shares his insight on this DVD.
Ron starts with a look at Arthur Smith, the granddaddy of American fiddle, to show how much he influenced everyone that followed in the 1940s. From there he takes six prominent Flatt & Scruggs fiddlers and teaches representative recorded solos from each of them.
Solos are examined for Jim Shumate, Benny Simms, Howdy Forrester, Chubby Wise, Benny Martin and Paul Warren. Not all of these men were regular members of the band, but all contributed to their classic recordings. Careful study of these pieces will go a long way towards unlocking the "secrets" of playing authentic bluegrass fiddle.
Classic songs like No Mother Or Dad, Earl's Breakdown, Thinking Of You, Foggy Mountain Special, Cabin In Caroline, Shuckin' The Corn, We'll Meet Again Sweetheart, and Let Those Brown Eyes Smile At Me are taught. Each is played with a small band, and then broken down section-by-section before being shown (fast and slow) in a split screen presentation.
