What some people don't know is that the ballon d'or back then was viewed as the best "european" footballer i.e. best footballer on the european fields. However, it was the fifa award which was seen as the one which determined the best player of the world and he won that before the ballon d'or at Barcelona. In other words, he was already the best player, factually, during his time in Barcelona.
