Ronald Edward Cuber (born December 25, 1941 in New York City) is a jazz saxophonist. He has also played in Latin, pop, rock and blues sessions. In addition to his primary instrument, baritone sax, he has also played tenor sax, soprano sax, clarinet and flute, the latter on an album by Eddie Palmieri as well as his own recordings. As a leader, Cuber is known for hard bop and Latin jazz. As a side man, he has played with numerous musicians, such as B. B. King, Paul Simon, and Eric Clapton.[1] Furthermore, Cuber can be heard on Freeze Frame by the J. Geils Band, and one of his most spirited performances is on Dr. Lonnie Smith's 1970 Blue Note album Drives. He was also a member in Saturday Night Live Band.
Cuber was in Marshall Brown's Newport Youth Band in 1959, where he switched from tenor to baritone sax. His first notable work was with Slide Hampton (1962) and Maynard Ferguson (1963-1965). Then from 1966 to 1967, Cuber worked with George Benson. He was also a member of the Lee Konitz nonet from 1977 to 1979.[2] He can be heard playing in Frank Zappa's group in the mid-1970s, including the album Zappa in New York. He has been a member of the Mingus Big Band since its inception in the early 1990s. He was an off-screen musician for the movie Across the Universe.

Shocked to just hear of Ronnie's passing last year. In this video clip Ronnie talks about getting an invitation to play with the Newport youth band in 1958. I remember that story well because I sat behind Ronnie as lead trumpet in the Alexander Hamilton high school Jazz band, directed by Mr. Rozovski. We had a talented group of young musicians and Ronnie stood out. I remember he played baritone back then because as a young guy I recall how big that instrument looked next to my B-flat trumpet. I followed his career over the years and admired how he rose in the Music industry. I still play and wish I could go back to those years because playing with Ronnie and that band were some of the best years of my young life. Ronnie had a wonderful musical run and inspired a lot of young sax players. As he is in peaceful rest his legacy lives on. Gerry

Just heard that Ronnie passed away a few minutes ago because I saw a recent video of him playing on instagram Just curious what happened because he looks youthful and healthy here but in the video I saw he looks unrecognizable- lost a lot of weight and looks a generation older Just curious what happened I saw this video a year ago maybe and just assumed Ronnie was still playing and doing well so it was really jarring to see him in that way in the recent video Rip

HIs final years were challenging, health wise. But that didn't stop him from continuing to play great music. We miss him.
