Metal has never been mainstream. It's not about following the trends and appealing to people of all ages. It's meant to resonate with certain people who feel (almost) like they're outcasts. Who want more drama, more aggression, more attitude, good musicianship and something that they can relate to. I think when people say they wish metal was more popular, they actually mean they wish it was more respected. Just my thoughts. EDIT: Great interview with a true icon of the genre. We all miss him very much.
@gunner799

Definitely. Metal has an intrinsic sense of “edginess” to it because it is not mainstream and it is different and more intense from what everyone else is listening to

Metal is a way of life,it's been place to hide,still is,from my childhood to these days (im 30) metal was a shelter from cruel enviroment and evil people,every interest in my life is somehow related to metal,artisticly and philosophical,religiously if you want,im so glad i belong to metal and you wonderful people

I'm so glad I caught him live on the Heaven and Hell reunion tour. I went to the show because Down and Megadeth were openers, and I carried this "Only Ozzy Sabbath is real Sabbath" attitude into the place. Well holy shitballs was I wrong. Dio CRUSHED it, just blew the doors off the place with his incredible voice. (Geezer and Tony and Vinnie helped, too). Now, don't get me wrong, I love the first 5, but Dio Sabbath is Best Sabbath.
@Runescarred
@Runescarred 5 лет назад
Me too! My wife and I got to see him in Selma, TX. Class act - I remember after the lights went up a lady ran to the stage with a poster and shouting his name. He turned right around, signed it and thanked her. Class. Act. Love Dio. Rest in Power

@Mike B I highly suggest you listen to the rest of Black Sabbath's discography as well. Lots of underrated gems after the Mob Rules. If you love the Dio era, you must check out the Tony Martin years. Start with Headless Cross.
@dyr234
@dyr234 4 года назад
i love all three sabbath ozzy, Dio and tony martin and the ozzy era is one i grew up with and made the most impact with me, but the dio era black sabbath was just as good. Heaven and Hell and mob roles and even dehumanizer were amazing records and the art is so cool, love the smoking angels playing cards on heaven and hell

Ronnie's thoughts and responses were always so thorough and well spoken. Truly one of the best orators that metal ever had and his vocal talent is the stuff of legend. So much power contained in such a small frame, almost unnaturally so. So very unfortunate to lose him at a relatively age but eternally grateful for the music he made before he left us. Horns up for the man that gave them to us. There will never be another like him \m/

The more interviews I watch of him the more I respect him. Intelligent, insightful, eloquent, sincere, and I can sense that after so many years of dealing with a lot of drunk , unintelligent A-holes that only accept one kind of attitude/music/ spectrum he feels like he has to filter everything that comes out of his mouth. I'm guessing that is his home where the interview takes place. I can picture him listening to opera or jazz, or Eastern music being curious as an artist and as a person about what is going on in the world but, huh, try to explain that to some Neanderthals that were powerful in the Industry. Dio you are missed on all levels

I still find it so tough to realise that he has been gone for nearly a decade, he understood metal music like no other, he was someone that could talk to you about anything related to it without sounding like an asshole trying to lecture you how to be “trve”. I wish a lot of musicians could learn that from him, him who gave this fantastic music genre so much and that will keep giving much even after his death. I will make sure my future kids know his art and respect the music the way he did. Rock on Ronnie, keep inspiring us from wherever you are!

There has always been a code of honor ( most of the time) with metal heads to have respect to the next person in the crowd, sometimes you get an asshole that wants to pick fights, but ive been to concerts, where the people around me have fun and get out there agressions, without beating the hell out of people

Being a metal musician isn't easy! It doesn't matter what you play, being a metal musician takes a lot to do. First, it's the love, and secondly, and most importantly is that you need to have the ability and understanding to play heavy music. Ronnie was one hell of a front man, and awesome at telling stories through his music. Too bad he's gone. He also proven that, you could be a short, ugly fucker and still pull a gaggle of ass from hot woman! Just because you are such a badass on the stage! 🤣

I do think there's a lack of musicality in most metal I come across, (certainly there's not much originality) I mean I love thrash and death metal... but it would be refreshing if more bands tried something other than death vocals for both.
