I have added a roof to Station Road and it captures the beautiful elegance of the real thing, even though it's nothing but card and paper. See how I added the dentils, gutters, chimneys, and tiles in this short update - Scratch Building Station Road... Part 25.

I just love the methodical way you go about making the detail in the roof and the patience you have. I totally get what you said about the joy you feel when it all comes together. Thanks for sharing. Roy.

Fantastic detail with those dentals, they look great . . . . As for the flamboyant shirt comment, well, considering that Michael is quickly becoming a West Yorkshire celebrity he needs a hook, something to make him stand out. Compo had his wellies and woolly hat, Michael has his rather fruity shirt 😂😂

Michael this is great, I love watching you get pieces of paper and card and use them to create a masterpiece. It’s really satisfying viewing and the effects you’ve achieved are incredible. Wonky chimneys - yes I found cocktail sticks very tricky to cut straight, I even started sellotaping them to the cutting mat and slicing through but it still didn’t work. Noted about next week and the announcement, and the variety of your shirts is becoming a real Chandwell feature, great stuff! 😊

If you want a truly square cut of thick wood or paper, check out the Slicer by Ultimation Tools (they're out of Canada). This baby is *expensive* - US $175, or about £138, shipping not included. BUT, it will cut very thick wood, or even styrene, absolutely square.

Another brilliant video Michael, thank you once again for sharing your knowledge and creativity with the world, it's not easy filming craft projects, writing scripts and then putting it all together in such a pleasing way and making it seem so effortless. Station Road is coming along so well, your dedication is wonderful. I love watching you use simple paper and card to make these amazing buildings and I can only hope to be as talented as you one day. Honestly, the fact that you hand cut everything is such a great motivation, I can't even begin to think to afford a cricut or laser cutter so seeing you make these art pieces by hand is wonderful, thank you so much. Oh, and your shirts are bloody amazing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

I'm going to adopt that roof tiling process as so far I have been cutting 4mm tiles to stick on (and strips) but your process looks great. Really looking the business now the attention to details as I always say especially in N gauge is just stunning.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 месяца назад
You've been cutting INDIVIDUAL tiles?
@ChobertonJunction

@@Chandwell old school Alan Downes style. I eventually started to cut strips and then cut half through for each tile but I am going to test your method on 00 gauge to see what it looks like.

I was swithering about doing my card tenements roof in plastic, but I think paper is the way to go. And the stack of chimney on the chimney stack will be getting copied too. Cheers

Dear Michael, beautiful how you did the dentals! Love the subtle detail of the gutter. That’s indeed a very flimsy piece of card. Absolutely get the necessity of cutting the brick paper into four separate sections. That’s simply unavoidable when the chimney base structure is added to the roof support in such a way. The paper side coloring with a water color pencil absolutely makes the difference. Have seen you do the roofing more than once, nevertheless it is obvious that your paper roofing skills improve towards perfection. Awesome how the slates look their part. Of course you’re modeling in British N scale, which bares the question if adding flashing details to the chimneys would make a difference. Must admit there it’s a bit of a pet peeve from a former occupation. Still, it’s just a remark for the level of detail you’re able to achieve. In that regard it’s my curiosity if a flashing detail would further add to the models of the chimneys. Cheerio
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 месяца назад
Thank you! Yes I’ve sometimes wondered about flashing and I’m in too minds as to whether it’s too much trouble for its worth, especially at N. I may try to add it when I’m adding the final detail to see how it goes.

One note on cutting out those dentals. Or the ends of slots on paper or wood models. Take a chisel Xacto type blade and grind or stone away the cutting edge to get a chisel of the appropriate width. If you know somebody who does model engineering they might be able to help you out. In HO or OO scale it is realively easy to emboss the courses of brick if you have patience. Using a laser cutter it is possible to cut the courses to they interlock in the corners. If cutting wood be sure to do the horizontals before you do the vertical cuts otherwise the bass* wood will split * Linden or Lyme

Michael Great video this part of Station Rd is starting to look great. If you like videos of roof details there’s are a couple of difficult shaped ones when Michael was building Back Market St, one near the Royal Scot with an eyebrow window the other the difficult 4 roofs of the Poor Law Building by High St. Wonder what the other 3 shops will be. Maybe that idea from Sowerby Bridge that was in the 2nd video of this series. Also what sort of rear extensions will fit into the space along Station Alley. Looking forward to more. Ian

These are amazing looking. Particularly considering that their N scale. How do you keep humidity from warping them? That problem is why most of the models I (and most Americans) build are wood and styrene.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 месяца назад
It’s not something I’ve ever thought about. I use varnish on the models but it’s inside the house, so the environment is fairly well controlled. I’ve not seen or read anything in the card modelling groups I’m part of that suggests anyone has had any particular problems. 🤔

Dentils? Any relation to teeth - as in dentist, dental etc.? They look a bit like teeth.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 месяца назад
Interesting question! Google to the rescue: Dentil. Latin: "dentes" = teeth (Dentils supposedly resemble a row of teeth.) The Greeks were first to declare that architecture was based on the proportions and form of the human body.

mike you need to save your pounds and buy a cheap laser! cutting out your dental from 2mm plywood would've taken 10min. without you babysitting. it can easily be stored under your bed when not in use. best of luck

We have this conversation quite often in the comments. Chandwell is all about me making things by hand as much as possible. It’s a way for me to switch off after a 45 hour week in technology. It’s the hours of cutting that bring me calm, joy, and headspace. A laser cutter, whilst bringing perfection and time saving, would rob me of the very joy and satisfaction that Chandwell brings me and would ultimately just stop the whole thing as it would become boring and mundane. Once I get arthritis or shaking hands, I may consider a machine T that point.
