Rookies Throw This Out! Fuel Damper 101 [TECH TALK]

When upgrading the fuel system, a component that’s often overlooked is the fuel pulsation damper. You’ll usually find these fitted to the factory fuel rails by the OE manufacturer, but they are often thrown away when fitting aftermarket fuel rails.
Unsurprisingly though, these dampeners serve a purpose, reducing the natural pressure fluctuations that result from the injectors opening and closing. Symptoms of these pressure pulsations include random lean areas in the rev range that can be difficult to tune out, or unusual bank to bank fuel variations in V6 or V8 engines. Radium Engineering have a novel solution with their own range of pulsation dampers that can be conveniently fitted to your existing fuel system, or their own fuel rails. This allows the flexibility of aftermarket fuel rails while retaining the advantage of the OE dampers.

I had an issue with this on my 1JZ once we upgraded everything fuel wise (all hard lines), and it was such of a pain in the ass to narrow down initially. I eventually installed the Radium damper on my fuel rail and the lean spot around 2k rpm went away and I could finally drive the car without it lurching and doing weird stuff.

I just ordered a radium fuel pulse damper for my 1j as well lol. I got rid of all the dumb stuff under the intake manifold, I figured the oem damper was there for a reason so I got this. Did you get the extended range version?
@DylanTK
@DylanTK 5 лет назад
@@stellaroid, if you mean the XR variant, I did not. when I spoke with Radium they explained that was for higher fuel pressures than what I'm running, so I opted for the more compact R version. (not that there is a detriment to using the bigger one, but I wanted more space) R = 40-70psi base static fuel pressure XR = 40-120psi base static fuel pressure

@@DylanTK where did you mount yours? I'm going to mount it on the fuel rail where the oem fpr was.

@@stellaroid, I drilled out the center port on my HKS rail and threaded it for 3/8npt. If I could redo it I'd get a bung welded on and use the o-ring version, but you cant win em all lol.
@stellaroid
@stellaroid 5 лет назад
@@DylanTK I can't find a 3/8npt female to m12x1.25 male adapter so I'm gonna weld my own adapter together. I'll just use a crush ring/washer to seal it to the rail. I think it'll work out pretty good. My fpd should be coming in today, I can't wait.

Some people run 2 or even 3 pumps, with the primary pump being for lower rpm/load and the others being activated as the fuel demand increases - the damper(s) should reduce any fluctuations during switching.
@FTsingos

I'm definitely going to install this on my system I'm building as a precaution. Only issue I'm running into is where the heck to mount it. I want a fuel rail mount one, but I don't have a free port. Is adding a tee to the fuel rail to allow a port for the damper a bad idea? It will be fuel feed line to fuel rail to tee to damper on one end and to pressure regulator on the other end. I'd run an inline damper, but I have no idea where to mount it in that mess of an engine bay especially with Radium's instructions recommending to mount it as close to the fuel rails as possible.

It took us and some seasoned pro's more time to figure out than we'll ever admit lol.I dont race and tune as much these days as I used too since I joined a APBA race boat. But still I'm amazed at the information you guys are putting out there. If I had access to your videos and classes when i got started I could be retired a rich man just on my savings from not blowing stuff up ;-) Please keep it up and hopefully you guys will get the recognition you all deserve.

So, I have an OM606 (a mechanically injected diesel). I was thinking about it, I wonder if a fuel pulsation damper would actually help mechanically injected diesel engines, at minimum I would think it would help even out the idle. I suppose there's really only one way to find out, but I do wonder if perhaps the pulses from the exchange ports opening and closing would be more than a gasoline pulsation damper could smooth out.

years ago i had the oem FPD leaking on a mazda 626 coupé that was converted to run on LPG anyway. the replacement would have cost me €180 if i remember correctly, so i closed it by packing it in liquid metal. this way it didn't leak and cause fire, but it obviously wouldn't dampen anymore either. This car was completely stock and only ran on petrol to warm up or when Autobahning in our neighboring country, never gave me no issues. so is this only a "problem" for tuned cars then? since the OEM FPD for my also LPG converted Volvo are out of stock now that's gone kaput, i have to replace it with a used one now and am planning on "fixing" the old one the same way i did with the mazda one.

They seem to be synonymous from the various grammar guides and I use and have read both versions. Seems to be an American/English english thing ;-) As for the need, or effectiveness, of devices to moderate line pressure, some argue that they are not needed but I figure that any pump is going to introduce pressure fluctuations - and, remember, there will also be fluctuations from sudden variations in the fuelling demands of the engine due to the inertia of the fuel in the return line*. Someone suggested a pressure regulator would remove the need for a damp(en)er but i would remind him/her that there is a pressure gradient across the opening range - eg. while it may just start to open at 3 bar the maximum opening of it's valve may be at 3.1bar (could be lower, could be much higher for poor quality - cheap/counterfeit - items) and any internal friction, etc, will cause some sticking that could further introduce fluctuations so, depending on the characteristics of that particular installation and the components used, you could be asking for an engine failure. *Look Velocity Head in fluids :-)

Yes, unlike America we use English English, not some other English, which isn't really English at all now is it ?
