Video showing process of making a ramp for Roomba robot to conquer 2 stair separation in house layout. The Roomba 650 and Roomba i7 robots were used for testing.
Thank you! This is exactly the situation I have. I appreciate seeing the whole prototyping process and the investigation of different slopes. I don’t have quite as much space, so may try something closer to 20 deg.
So far so good with this vacuum. ru-vid.comUgkx8ISPQRRAfpAaX4msGjyodObTBnlj4T5g I was a little concerned to find it seems to be all plastic, but the reviews were good, so I'm hoping for the best. Very easy to assemble Recommened, and only attachments I've used so far work well, and are easy to use. Doing a good job on the new carpet in my bedrooms and stairs. Works well on the hardwood on my main floor too. Reasonable weight and cord length. I already knew from an earlier review that it wouldn't fit under furniture, but I can use my Eufy for that, so no problem - the high traffic areas that need a stronger suction was really what I bought this for. If it continues as it's started, it will be a good buy and well worth the money. I have had two Shark Rocket stick vacs in the past that are super easy to use, but the motors just don't last well, even with scrupulous cleaning of the filters. I'm hoping for better with this Bissell.
@@DanielGonzalezL That's awesome, thanks for sharing! I was really wondering whether the Lidar equipped vacuums would tolerate such a design. Guess I'm building a ramp tonight.
Thanks for this! Do your vacuums actually use the ramp when they are “doing their job” now? I have a single step from my great room into the rest of my main floor and I’m trying to figure out which Robot Vacuum to buy and how to get around that step and not have to pick up the vacuum because I keep seeing you aren’t supposed to pick them up but it would be really annoying to only be able to use it in one room when it’s still technically all the same main floor of the house just separated by one step. I was like “oh I wonder if they could do a ramp!” And your video is the only one I could find with roombas and ramps.
Thank you for this video. I have a single step i need my 6i to navigate and i plan to use this video for that. I will update comments with my results. again thank you
Great question. The short answer is, poorly. Having two levels (the ramp and the floor) totally confused the robot's 2D mapping system. To solve this issue, I setup the virtual wall barrier so it can't go under the ramp.
How wide is your ramp path? Why did you choose to construct it wider than the max width of the vac? Would it not go straight down otherwise? Just curious if you found that it needs wiggle room to maneuver properly.
I wasn't sure how the Roomba would handle a very narrow path, so I went a few inches wider than the robot. I think it would work fine with only 1" clearance.
I made a ramp for the Samsung Jetbot, it will go down but not up. The ramp is 12.5 degrees.. is there a solution to tune the tilt sensors or adjust the software?
@@roboskerritt thats the reason it won't work for me. It goes down about half way onto a landing then does a 180° turn which would be pretty hard to get working
I have 10 steps up, so the solution was to buy a second 531 and leave one upstairs and the other downstairs, this way the whole house gets done at the same time and I just do the stairs with a handheld rechargeable. The 3rd level down 5 steps is not a large area, so the handheld is used there too. Best solution I could find, although the spiral suggestion sounds OK but would take up too much space. Brava stays on the level with hard floors.
Interesting. I am about to make a ramp for one stair. It occurred to me that a thin carpet runner material would increase friction. Also, are the edges necessary? It shouldn’t fall off anyway.
Carpet is a good idea. The edges aren't absolutely necessary, but they are nice to have. They prevent the Roomba from getting stuck with one wheel off the ramp, help with navigation, and add strength to the ramp.
I was wondering if this was going to be possible. In the past I’ve always had to physically lift and move them the 2 steps up and down my main floor. Family Room 2 steps down on East side, Living Room 2 steps down on west side. Now I’ll try building 2 ramps and see?? Thanks 😊
@@theattorney6072 embarrassingly no, it took a backseat to other projects and circumstances that keep arising and demanding center stage. I have not forgotten, and it’s on my To Do list! One of these days, it’d sure come in handy. My friends tell me to just buy more robots to stay on every level, excuse me, if I had all that extra cash laying around!!?
@@a247pms Thx. I did build a ramp and it worked fine. However, i juste ordered a second robot because I found it annoying to have a ramp Always in the stairs. Also, the advantage of cleaning the housse two Times faster with two robots.
I wonder how far away we are from an iRobot floor cleaner actually capable of vacuuming/cleaning AND maneuvering it’s way up a staircase at the same time. I don’t think we are too far off… they can clean outside windows, clean out gutters, mow the lawn, and so on… I’m looking forward to testing that out.
My J7+ (two months old) has stopped avoiding things and no longer shows me obstacle photos. I have gone to the map and reset obstacle sensing with no luck so I did a factory reset with no luck. It's like the camera is not working. Do you have any ideas I can try?
Robots gone wild lol. Make sure all the sensors are clean and there is enough ambient light if you haven't already. If that doesn't work, time to contact customer support. Good luck.
OMG. I love this video. I am working on my dissertation discussing robots and the environment. Your video is a wonderful case for my reseach! I would love to put this case in my dissertation if you grant me permission.
