Roonies is a dive site just off 2-Mile Reef at Sodwana Bay, South Africa. This is a small, flattish, isolated piece of rocky reef that is suitable for advanced divers due to it's depth. What the site lacks in topography it makes up for in density of rare and unusual species. On the northern end of the site is a huge yellow-green black coral tree and on the southern end there is an isolated bommie with large numbers of shoaling baitfish and a cleaning station.
Because it is a little further offshore from the shallower sites on 2-Mile reef, this site tends to have better visibility and is more protected from surge when the swell is big. Because this is a small site it is not recommended when there is a strong current running because it can be easy to miss the drop and land on sand.
This is one of the few sites in South Africa where seahorses are frequently seen (usually Thorny Seahorse, though the very rare Pygmy Pipehorse has also been seen here). The site has a number of Longnose Hawkfish which are found in the numerous black coral trees on the site, as well as the rare Cave Hawkfish. Other species that have been seen here include turtles, banded pipefish, leopard sharks, whip-coral crabs, squat lobsters and many species of nudibranchs.
Depth: 30-34m
