Over the last 3 years, Roosevelt high school’s Student Health Action Council and Climate Coach Kiera Asay, in partnership with Nicole Mayer, MPH, project manager from the Multnomah County Community & Adolescent Health program have trained and lead a group of over 20 students to act as Peer Mediators. These students manage conflicts that arise on the Roosevelt campus. Students work with Kiera Asay to develop positive social-emotional skills, use de-escalation techniques, and prevent arguments that could potentially escalate into violence.
Those involved build valuable life-long skills and provide all Roosevelt students with a safe and trusted space to manage conflict without the need for intervention by authorities. Students view admin as being focused on solutions that are punitive rather than attempting to address core issues that arise between students, relatable to peers. Youth report experiencing greater trust, understanding, support and achieve more lasting resolution when working with their own peers to resolve conflicts.
