"Fruit Picker Saturday Night"
Written by: Bob Greenlee, Foster Mackenzie III, and Ernie Lancaster
Recorded 16 January 1979, at Track Recorders
8226 Georgia Avenue - Silver Spring, Maryland
Root Boy Slim: vocals, blues harp
Ernie Lancaster: guitar
Steuart Smith: guitar
Bob Greenlee: bass
Winston Kelly: organ
Albert Bashor: drums
From the "Blues Night" session which was a no frills, spontaneous, ad libbed, one take masterpiece.
Of the eighteen songs originally recorded that night, only "Graveyard of Losers" found it's way onto the B side of "The Meltdown" in April 1979.
"The Shah is Gone" got it's share of immediate radio airplay, and notoriety, but was never commercially released.
The session tape then languished in the storage can until producer Bob Greenlee resurrected it in 1987.
Eleven of the tracks were released on an album entitled "Left for Dead" on Greenlee's King Snake Records label.
Yet, it would be another quarter century until the session tape would merit a re release on compact disc.
Only days ago, "Left for Dead" resurfaced on CD courtesy of Rip Bang Records.
It includes two welcome bonus tracks; "The Shah is Gone", and "Space Ship Boogie".
As fate would have it, four songs still remain unreleased, and as I see no prospects of the songs ever being included elsewhere....
I present them to you in this way.

I’ve been looking for a song I heard on a cassette a dear friend of mine had. I really thought I had a copy. He was a friend of Root’s, Champ Young played the B3. It’s about/called Old Folks Home? Throw your bedpan out the window to watch the nurses run.

Which line-up was Champ Young in? Barbecue Juiceheads? New Hope for the Criminally Insane? Cryin' Out Loud? Slim had a few bands, maybe narrow it down and I'll look through my tape library. There's plenty of unreleased treasures

@@richardvollinhey Richard! I’m Ernie’s son and I know that song but I’m pretty sure it was recorded in Florida with Winston Kelly on B3. I very well could be wrong, as you said, Slim had a great lineup of musicians who played in many different incarnations of Slim, Prince La La..etc.

best band ever blackballed by wb
@richardvollin
@richardvollin 10 лет назад
Well...maybe not black-balled necessarily...WB just didn't know what to do with Slim. Too many drug references in the album made the 'men in suits' a bit uneasy. WB bought them out of their contract, and set them free to persue another label. Both parties benefited greatly from the split, and Slim and company didn't have to rot under contract with an indifferent label, and poor promotion. The whole debacle was due to WB wanting to court Walter Becker, and Donald Fagen of STEELY DAN away from ABC Records. WB signed the ROOT on Becker, and Fagen's recommendation; WB thinking if they kissed the ass of STEELY DAN, everyone would would come out a winner.

@@johnstallings4049 I'm from Annapolis, and I was a security guard for "The Ban is Lifted" show at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park (the city banned performances by Slim & the band, following a riot on Route 1 after a gig at the Back Room. BARELY avoided arrest at "The Ban is Lifted" show! (long story).
