Always happy to see Root given love. Here's some rules errors I found. Looks like Devon missed his setup. You are supposed to start the game with 3 payments in the payments box, this means you don't get protectionism on turn 1 (so it's the only time to price things at 1) nut Devon should have had 3 funds to work with on turn 1. Also when you place a trade post, an oft-forgotten rule is that you recruit a warriors alongside the trade post as a bonus (he spotted it later but just wanted to shout this for the viewers) I was so sad to see Lizards start with 0 Acolytes. Use the Setup cards that came in Marauder expansion, it fixes balance issues with the standard setup, one of which is that Lizards get 2 starting acolytes! (This isn't a rules mistake but I just wanted to shout out the ADSET cards as they massively improve the game) The Black market is always 3 facedown cards and you cannot put the same card back after you take one, it must be a switch. Sheera is 100% right, Warlord doesn't score a VP when razing a ruin, that's only the vagabond but it's a common mistake. Riverfolk purchase was legal even if you don't share a clearing with them, you only need to be in a clearing with a trade post for additional purchases after the first purchase per turn. You can always make 1 purchase every turn. Devon seemed to be under the assumption that he needs warriors in a clearing to place a trade post, Just FYI, Riverfolk don't need any presence in a clearing to place a trade post if they are spending enemy funds. The only condition is that the funds belong to the rule of the clearing. Lizards don't get to choose outcast if it's tied, it just stays on whatever it was and becomes hated. Sheera crafted a boot and it should have gone to lost souls. Lost Souls isn't just for enemy discards, lizards' as well. Might have been an oversight as she was on it for most other discards. That's all I got by the 50 minute mark.

The riverfolk mistakes are really game changing, he is clearly strugling to do things like having cards, when he is supposed to have too many things he can do. But he also missed how dividends works, giving him a very big lead. But I guess thats how most High Complexity spirits are in their first game, they can get confusing. It is still a very fun watch though.

Buying your first service from the otters DOES NOT require you being in a clearing with a trading post. Only the second on your turn.

(Devon did NOT win, see below) ❤️ First of all I really appreciate the production you guys put into this video, it was really fun to watch, and also you made much less rules mistakes than usual, thanks guys ❤️ Devon DIDN'T win because everytime Riverfolk lose a Trade Post they must lose half their funds! A few more mistakes: 17:45 Black market cards should be separated and you cannot look at them before swapping. 24:42 Razing a ruin doesn't score a point. Only by exploring with the Vagabond. - You CAN buy from Riverfolk 1 service, you only need to be in trade post clearings if you want more than 1. 36:07 Trade posts come with 1 warrior always. 42:35 If lost souls is tied Lizard player does NOT choose outcast, it stays where it is and becomes/remains hated. 1:27:39 Sheera should lose 2 cards because she lost 2 gardens. 1:39:04 Devon should lose HALF his funds everytime he loses a Trade post (happens again later).

I absolutely love your guy's content, especially these past 2am videos. I also love Root, it's by far my favorite game and is actually the game that brought me to your channel in the first place. As such, I'd also like to point out rules mistakes that I come across to help everyone learn the game a little better. - Devon's set up as the Riverfolk Company is incorrect because the fox clearing he sets up in is not on the river. Also, the Riverfolk Company should start with 3 funds in the payments box. - All of the Warlord's mood cards only ever apply to the Warlords clearing. So on Jesse's first turn, the incite action would technically have to happen in the Lost City clearing where the Warlord was in order to activate the Jubilant mood's ability. - The Black Market landmark should be a blind draw, so you don't get to look at all 3 cards and decide what you want to swap for. - The Warlord's Raze ability does not score you a point for removing ruins, only other player's buildings and tokens. - It's so minor, but Shira should've drawn 3 cards instead of 2 on her second turn because she had 2 bunny and 2 mouse gardens. - Every player can buy 1 Riverfolk service at the start of their turn and you can buy additional services for each trade post you're next to. For example, if you are adjacent to 2 tradeposts you can buy up to 3 services because you always have a base of 1. So a mistake wasn't actually made there, but just clarifying. - Every time the Riverfolk Company puts out a trade post a warrior goes with it. Sometimes Devon remembered and other times he didn't. - Lizard Cult gardens must be placed in a matching clearing using a matching card. Around the 46-47 minute mark Shira revealed a bunny card and placed a bunny garden in a fox clearing, which is illegal. You guys fixed it later but still a good clarification for people. - The Eeyrie Dynasty can't add 2 bird cards to the decree in the same turn - When the Riverfolk lose a trade post while they have funds in the funds box, they lose half of they're funds rounded up. This would've happened to Devon twice in a row when West destroyed 2 of Devon's trade posts. Overall loved the playthrough. Root is such a fun game but a tough game to get the rules 100% correct. Hope my rules clarifications helped. Also, just some general tips about the 4 factions that were played. As the Eeyrie it's generally a bad idea to put suited cards in the recruit column. The otters scoring dividends ability is usually a bad way to score points, but I guess that only matters if people remove the trade posts and remember the rule to remove half of the funds. The rats need to try and keep the Warlord on the board at all costs. And lastly, the Lizards are my favorite faction and Shira did a pretty decent job, but good lord don't leave so many undefended buildings. Losing gardens and having to discard cards as the lizards is too brutal because it's your entire action economy. The lizards need to build up warriors and hunker down in the 2 slot building clearings to just protect, score and do conspiracies when necessary and usually only when it's hated outcast

Collecting points with funds until you can end with posts is a fun strategy, but only it if you have but a SINGLE trade post that you can defend. Because otherwise people just have to attack any of them to cut half of your savings - a fact which they were painfully unaware of.

EDIT: I decided to list all rules goofs when I spot them below. Disclaimer: I still love these videos and really appreciate them! Just couldn't resist since Jesse was so adamant about never missing a rule ;) On Devon's second turn he couldn't have moved that first time, since the Eyrie have rule in a tie. But I don't believe it matters overall in this case. During Jesse's second turn he should not have gotten a point for removing that ruin. Then Jesse claims he can't buy from the Riverfolk when not in a clearing with them, which is false. Ironic. And then Devon wins?? DID NONE OF YOU KNOW THAT DESTROYING A TRADE POST REMOVES HALF OF HIS FUNDS???

What effect would rolling the mob die on Jesse’s first turn have done? He had no mob tokens on the board so he would not have been able to place another in a matching clearing that is adjacent to an already placed mod token.

What I like about the lizardfolk is that they don't win very often, but they usually determine who wins since it's so easy for them to screw over one faction in particular. Also, I am not sure if you guys did this since I haven't watched the entire video, but lizard folk has an updated rule. When they use acolytes to pay for rituals, they take acolytes from the supply -- not the board! It makes them feel a lot more fun.

Small thing, but I feel the Eyrie could have been explained better by focusing on how they are all about their Decree and programming that, rather than leaders and how they "allow different actions". As a new player I don't think I would have gotten it. Contrast that to the Lizard Cult intro which was really to the point.

It’s kinda interesting to see riverfolk wins this game. he did not add any warriors into the clearings while he was building the trade posts so that was a big disadvantage for him but then he didn’t loose half of a funds for loosing a trade post. Which is another big mistake. One big disadvantage vs one big advantage. But anyway the real reason of this victory is that everybody was just spending their warriors for services they didnt even needed and the funny thing is that those services were extremely expensive but they still bought it, that’s even more crazy than all the rule mistakes that happened in this game. I have to say that these types of videos and especially editing was super cool and I wanna watch these more and more but guys, you really should learn more about the basic rules of each faction and a bit more about the strategy. For example: If someone has 15 VP and someone 8 VP that does not really mean that the 15 VP faction is closer to a victory, it all depends on the current situation, rule clearings, cards in the hand, warriors position, etc, etc. But love you guys anyway. ❤

The fact that nobody knew he has to defend them was an advantage as well, because that way he did not have to recruit. - Which would already have taken more warriors than the 3 he missed.

Quack! New player here to the game of Root and without people to play with me I'm just vicariously playing through these videos. So first of all, a HUGE THANK YOU! That said, I am also using these videos to test myself to spot mistakes so I can be an effective teacher in the future. So I've listed every error I found with a time stamp and a {law reference}. DISCLAIMER: This is in no way an attack on these players or Quackalope. More of just an example of how complex this game is and how difficult it is to play exactly by the law. This helped me a bunch and I hope it helps anyone else as well. 00:09:20 - Devon should have started with 3 warriors in his payment box 00:10:30 (and many other times) - Devon should have put a warrior in the clearing that he established a trading post {11.5.6} 00:15:40 - Jesse's did not incite in the warlord's clearing, so he should not have rolled the die for Jubilant 00:17:50 (and many other times) - Sheera should not have been able to look at the black market. They are facedown for that reason 00:22:00 - Devon forgot to take two points for destroying Wes's two roosts (He remembered later at 23:37) 00:24:46 - Jesse should not have gotten a point for removing the item under the ruin (That is only the vagabond) 00:35:00 ish - Anyone is allowed to make one purchase from riverfolk at the start of their birdsong, PLUS one purchase for each clearing with an outpost where they have ANY faction pieces {11.2.6.III} 00:36:50 - Jesse is skipping most of his birdsong and going straight to change mood. It was moot here but had there been a ruin that a Raze action would have revealed, it could have limited his choices for mood. Very easy to get excited about your turn and skip steps but it is very crucial to follow them in exact order 00:46:00 - Sheera could not have placed the garden there as the card she revealed did not match the clearing. {10.5.1} Big break of no real mistakes I could see 01:33:20 - Sheera would not have dealt a hit to Jessie as the roll was a 1-0. Even though the attack was a Loot ability, the defender still takes the lower die as there is nothing under the Loot ability that says otherwise. All it says is the attack deals no rolled hits. Higher and lower die are still assigned according to the general battle rule {4.3.2 and 14.2.5} 01:38:20 - Wes could not recruit in the fox clearing as he had not roosts there. 01:39:10 - Possibly the most detrimental mistake of the game. The Riverfolk should have lost half of their funds when their outpost was destroyed and then again another half of those funds when their second outpost was destroyed. (Note that the warriors must be in the funds box to be counted as funds and then therefore lost from Trade Disruption. Committed funds are not lost from Trade Disruption {11.2.4}) Again this is not an attack on anyone. And thank you all so much for making these videos. Really helping me kill the time and learn this amazing game as I get through covid isolation.

1:39:05 this was really painful to watch... all that time they could just break a trading post to hold the otters back... yet no one didn't... why? because they didn't know the rules :( when the trading post was removed, the otters should've lost half their funds, which should've happened way earlier if anyone in the table knew the rules. There were many rules mistaken but this one was actually a major game changer, like, it netted the otters probably 15 or so points.

Otter Setup and first turn seems off: Law of Root (June 2022): 11.3 (Otters') Faction Setup 11.3.2 Step 2: Place Warriors. Place 4 warriors in any clearing touching the river. -- Though the Lake map doesn't have a river, the lake touches several of the clearings and is used in place of the river. Unfortunately, one of Devon's first two clearings doesn't touch the lake. 11.3.4 Step 4: Gain Starting Funds. Place 3 warriors in your Payments box. -- Devon didn't do this, and at the beginning of his turn gained 2. He should have had an extra (otter) fund to work with on his first turn. 11.5 (Otters') Daylight 11.5.6 Establish Trade Post with Garrison. Spend two funds to place a trade post and a warrior. -- He almost did this just fine, but didn't add a warrior to that clearing. ----- Hilarious with the anecdote *right after* the otter's first turn about not missing rules anywhere. Pretty sure in a game this big, missing a rule here and there is part of the territory. Would find it hard to find a real-played game where every. single. rule was followed.

If there are several Riverfolk warriors in an area, with a trade post. Can I buy the mercenary service and raid the riverfolk trading post in the same area? This is very stupid. In this case, there is no warrior to defend the trading post, so I easily get a point
@jasonsinger4637
@jasonsinger4637 3 месяца назад
Bit late but: The specific language from the Law of Root is... the buyer treats Riverfolk warriors as their own only for rule and for battle against factions other than the Riverfolk. So the mercenary buyer CAN do battle against a Trading Post, but Riverfolk mercenaries will not participate in the battle.

The game was all wrong. Half the riverfolk points came from scoring funds, which they lose half when a trading post is destroyed, and they actually need a trading post in the map to score funds... so the table could easily just take out 1 or 2 trading posts and severely hamper the riverfolk by removing half their actions and points. Unfortunately, NOBODY in the table knew how riverfolk works, so that's a shame... to play root effectively you must know how the factions in play work, or else you'll just end up with games like this, where nothing makes sense. The rules were made to prevent things like this from happening. That's why you read rules before playing.
