Conservation in Nebraska relies on collaboration between landowners and agencies, and Marvin and Mick Hochstein along with their family, embody a deep commitment to conservation. They are implementing agricultural practices that promote biodiversity and align with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Nebraska Natural Legacy Project.
Operating on over 1,000 acres of native prairie in northeastern Nebraska, the Hochsteins use prescribed burns and grazing to restore habitats for native species like the greater prairie-chicken. Their efforts, supported by Nebraska Game and Parks and other conservation groups, have not only benefited wildlife but have also improved water quality and soil health in the Verdigris-Bazile Biologically Unique Landscape.
Through their stewardship, the Hochsteins have created a model for sustainable ranching that integrates land ethic with economic viability, setting an example for others to follow.
