Rooting GREEN Fig Cuttings in the Summer

Accidently found a fun way to propagate fig cuttings in the same season they grew. Just putting the cutting in water with NO rooting hormone and leaving it in the shade for a few weeks caused a root explosion! The cutting material was about 4 weeks old.

This is excellent, I always wondered why I couldn't find anyone doing this. Other plants root in water. Thanks!

Tried this three times and didn't have any success. First time I screwed up and put them in sunlight so my bad. The second and third time the cuttings would produce little white bumps but no roots and more than a few went slimy and rotted. Maybe this method doesnt work for the type of figs I have, which I believe is Italian Honey variety.

The white bumps were a good sign! They were almost there. You might have to change the water a bit more. I am going to further this experiment and use an air stone next. It very well could be the variety. Don't give up! Try again! "The only people who don't succeed are those who stop trying."

Is this what’s referred to as tissue cultures?

no not really. that is done in more of a sterile laboratory setting with a lot less plant material. this is sort of aquaponics.

I was just recently making some cuttings and left the leaves in the wheel barrel unintentionally. They dried out in the hot summer sun over a few days and when I revisited, I was shocked at the wonderful aroma they had. Maybe I’ll try to make some herbal tea from them.

Hi I'm Tela, I live in Middle Georgia, I saw your channel last year and guess what? IT WORKS!!! Being new to figs, I purchased trees, thinned them and now I have 2 of each.. I bought 8 varieties, and now I have copies of each... Think about it.. makes total sense, in the summer, it's EASY, the heat is there. All we have to do is let the figs loving the heat so it's job ❤.. Most order expensive cuttings in the winter, and struggle with heat mats and greenhouses, your just doing it on the plants natural time to root. ❤

@@twiggshomestead6497 I'm learning so much following you, you're not using huge words trying to be an expert, you're just showing an easy simple way, and the proof is right there... I do have a question ❓. Why don't you cover your air layers in tin foil ? I'm going to do my first one this year and why does everyone use Reynolds wrap and you don't?

I have been taking the fig petioles with leaves which I cut in half, putting them in rooting hormone, and sticking them in potting mix in a cup (wet soil) and then place a cup over it. Tape it together and in 6-8 weeks I have rooting fig cuttings.
@twiggshomestead6497
@twiggshomestead6497 Год назад
Very nice! Yes it does work! I was amazed because no one really talks about this when discussing figs. I live in NJ where it gets really humid over the summer so that is likely what helped keep my leaves hydrated and happy throughout the rooting process. Using a dome vs no dome will probably be my next experiment. Thanks for watching!

@@twiggshomestead6497 I'm in Zone 5. It's hot and humid now (high 80s days with high 60s nights and 70F dew points) but once this heat wave passes I might have to put them into a rubbermaid container to increase the heat and humidity. Maybe put the container on my mulch pile for bottom heat (the mulch pile has a core temp of 105F).

Not sure this is legit , if you screen shot it before and after it’s the same background same time of day and every plant is the same size, and he’s wearing the same shirt with ear plugs
@twiggshomestead6497

Lol it’s legit I promise. I’m not here to deceive at all. I always have ear plugs on and the plants don’t grow when no root system. They use their energy to generate roots.

@twiggshomestead6497
@twiggshomestead6497 Год назад
Amazing thanks for finding me! Yes, I transplanted the rooting cutting into a pot for the fall to continue rooting well until it went dormant, I then overwintered the dormant potted cutting in a non-heated greenhouse to keep it dormant, then transplanted to the ground the following spring.
