❤ QUESTION and comment: - When you say “No sunlight”, do you mean no DIRECT sunlight? I have a few places next to my house that have no direct sunlight. Or, I could keep in my basement if no sunlight needed. - This is the best video I’ve seen so far! Makes me feel like I actually have a chance of success.

I may be a little late to do a cutting, but I was challenged to plant a tree this week and show a progress update in August after we move to Oregon from Indiana.... so I need to get a little creative. This video’s golden, yet, I have a question for ya… 😁 I’ve done the same exact steps shown in your video at the beginning of June and now I can see that the majority of the cuttings are still alive and should’ve rooted. It took 7.5 weeks for this. Now what should I do? Let them grow (not under direct sunlight I guess) in the same pot together till I see more substantial growth or would it be better to repot? 🤔
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
I leave mine where they are for the year. Slowly I will get them used to drier air by opening up the baggie. Maybe around leaf drop, or else in early spring will I take a look, lift them from the pot and plant them up properly. Hurrying the process is a recipe for problems!

As soon as I see the first buds starting to open up. That for me is a sign of the tree (starting to) root. Mind you, if a cutting just sits there all summer, I do not fertilize. Whereas if they start pushing 6 weeks after taking the cutting, that is when I start

I don't have such bags, so I just keep the soil a bit moist or just wet?

Can cuttings be stored somehow? My parents live long distance from me and will be visiting in late June, I’m wondering if they can take cuttings off their Japanese maple now (or soon) and keep them alive until they come to visit me in late June and I’d process them then, use the rooting hormone and planting them.

@@JK-qz1sw Ohw really? Here it is cheap as potting soil. 6E gets me a bag! There might be other things that work just as well. But I have used this for a few things and never looked back. Which reminds me.. I need a new bag! Thank you! Will try to create another usefull video then! ;)

Hi Jelle, thanks, I love this video of yours and, after watching this, I went into my garden and took some cuttings from Acer P plant. As you suggested, potted (x 4) and put in sandwich bags. Now, approx 2 weeks later (end of July 2022), they seem to be looking as I planted them, ie not died. At what point will I know they have rooted and at what point do I remove/open the plastic bags, please? Many thanks for any help, J :)
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
I have 6-8 weeks as a rough indication when I expect them to start rooting. I just unlock the ziplocks, nothing else. Every once in a while I might take the pot out, shower them, and let them air a bit. In fall I will check which have rooted.

@@GrowingBonsai Thank you so much for your response, and so promptly too ;) Very impressive ! OK, so I need to mark on my calendar, cos I have such a poor memory, to do this in about 4-5 weeks time Then, presumably, re-pot as/when roots are showing in the bottom of the pot? I intend to, ultimately, have at least one, in reasonable-sized pot, on my patio. I think it will be a few years before it's a nice little size LOL Thank you again for your help :)

As said, I just check in fall. Then I take them all out of the pot and see which ones have rooted. Dropping leaves does not always mean dead !

Interesting, but how can they survive in the long-term? Grafting onto hardy root stalk ensures a better survival rate
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 2 года назад
Hi joanne, once these are rooted they have regular survival as other maples. Grafted arakawa has the downside that the nebari does not get the rough bark. I have 2 mature arakawa on their own roots (see my videos, one of them is in there). They are on their own roots too.

Beautiful bonsai of Japanese 🍁 . I need some advice on how often do you water this plant? Is an over watering could kill these plants?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
If you have poor substrate, yes. It is important to allow the rootball to get slightly dry between waterings.

Hey there, my question may seem silly but I must ask. My neighbor has a purple Japanese maple shrub and in a windstorm the other day a small branch(all green around the bark line and nice healthy white wood)got blown off. Is there any chance of me succeeding in getting this branch(like a ft in length and maybe a half inch round) to sprout new rooting using this method in the video or in any method whatsoever?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
japanese maple can be tricky to root. Older branches do not always work. So I would take smaller cutting, place them in substrate, quite deep, and leave them in a sheltered spot hoping for spring growth.

I'm wondering if you can root larger cuttings than just little twigs like that? I have a lot of very large (20 foot tall) japanese maples in my yard that need t be pruned back hard, I would love to get some small trees out of it
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
I would recommend airlayering. Larger cuttings are less successfull.
