I am sooooo sorry...I cannot believe all this. It is horrible. If I lived in those times I would've fought with every fibre of my body for them. I am crying the whole time. This is part of my grandchild's school project. I am truly sorry for our barbaric behaviour.

It’s sad that people in the comments can’t do nuance. Three things are very clear to me and I would hope we could all agree: 1) Killing the children was obviously wrong as it is ALWAYS wrong. No justifications can be found for that. 2) The fact that these slaves hated white people in general given that all they had known them as was oppressors is not a surprise. These slaves had been brutalised by violence from slave owners who were white. That this could express itself in indiscriminate violence against all white peoples is also not a surprise. 3) This means that the ultimate blame for what happened here lies with the slave owners. They created a situation where their own children were at risk. So while there can be no “justification” for the killing of the children, there are “explanations” for it.

Alex N. Well, I don’t really know. Killing the slavemasters was justified, as they were oppressing and mistreating them daily. Killing children seems just a little bit much though. I think that there may‘ve been ways that they could have dealt with it instead of just resorting to murder right away. Grown adults with their mindset on “disciplining” enslaved Africans are very difficult to change, but children can be surprisingly easy to mold into different people. I don’t know, it just feels wrong.

Deuteronomy 28:68 Talks about a curse that include slave ships and our enemies selling us. Plus, all our well known burdens of enslavement is told in the bible. aphuna killing those children definitely wasn’t right. Just know it wasn’t simply because they were being harassed, there was much more than just being beat up. Women were raped, babies were used as alligator bait, starved most of the time and much more atrocities that would make anyone snap. Do you realize the trauma these people suffered and how much it actually affects the functionality of your brain?

History is complicated. Killing the children was horrific and obviously wrong but so was the situation that led to the slave revolt in the first place. An inhuman institution (slavery) led to inhuman acts of revenge by some of its victims. Violence begets violence. Even though the children should never have been targets, you can also see why those slaves had so much hatred that they did something so terrible.

Im getting really interested in american slavery. The good guys and bad guys are pretty clear, black and white, pun intended, but there is still some grey in there, the bad guys thinking they are justified. It also has some sense of rebelling against auhtority.

Stylized....a bit of fiction based on fact.....one of my grand fathers did own slaves....I got read some of his writings, walk through house, and hear stories....from dad's father, when you grow up in the late 60's, who could see the divide between black and white. I watched Roots but the remake......the divide between black and white and North and South really did not change until the 1970's. Ex: the county I lived in the schools did not integrate unlit 1972. A whole generation had been raised but nothing had changed underneath.....Your generation has change the intent, flow and mindset....

Uh excuse please ! Up until 1865 slavery was 100% legal. Legal doesn't have much to do with what is considered good or evil nor right or wrong. Legal = accepted proper rules people live with and abide accordingly to those rules ! ! ! P. S. Full time employment replaced slavery. We are all subjects earning our living by following instructions from our employers.
