I’ve known about Gibson binding process for years and how it’s done, but the chemical reaction with the adhesive to the wood I just learned about today. Really fascinating stuff, and I’m glad to know that the binding is not gonna fall off my Les Paul anytime soon.

...with a quality control failing miserably! That would be like commissioning Michelangelo to do "Sistine Chapel" that'll chip of and crumble in few months! No, thank you! Just recently had a chance to compare a hand built (in China) Epiphone Custom Pro and a Gibson LP Custom... Yes, there is an evident difference but none that would justify (NONE) a difference of 3.5k US$ - N O N E ! Now don't get me wrong, I love Gibson dearly, I am a proud owner of a '79 LP but nowadays, I would always go for an Epiphone with changed pups and hardware and still, the bill would be far, far less than today's LP nightmares - unfortunately...

That damned slack belt sander is the destroyer of contours and flattener of carved tops. It should be cut into small smoking chunks with a cutting torch and the remains run over with a bulldozer then buried in the bottom of an abandoned rock quarry. Do the post-contour sanding like PRS does, by hand using people who know how to run orbital sanders properly. The accuracy and consistency of the top carves after sanding will be GREATLY improved.

i checked out a new les paul custom and it was nice but not for the price! if epiphone starts doing fret nibs ide be content with one of the new p90 customs..but it looks like ill be searching for a good wood era custom that's priced according to its actual used value witch is often almost a thousand dollar savings! and for a better made guitar! you have alot of work if you want to connect to today's up and coming players. they have every option in the world and for a reasonable price at that! everything from a fender classic vibe stratocaster for a fraction of the price of what you charge for your reissue entry student level instruments! its insane! even your no frills units have a huge perineum! why?

The binders you see in this video don't bind multi layer Les Pauls. The ES department located just beside the bodyline is the department that binds a ES345 which is a double bound top. The binders in this video will occasionally build LP Customs or a 20 year employee guitar. Their days are made of binding LP Gold Tops, LP Standards, etc.

@JohnSmith-in1tt
@JohnSmith-in1tt 4 года назад
Charlie Cartolano I think people want to be able to pick which guitar they like the most out of a few other ones of the same model without having to search for them. Also some people just don’t want to buy something that’s been used and broken in or damaged or modded by somebody else. Most importantly though, if you buy a used guitar from a website like reverb, you can’t play it and feel it before you buy, which is something that a physical guitar store with mostly new guitars offers

The Process: Step 1 Illegally log ebony and rosewood from Madagascar, use it to build guitars, and then deny ever committing any wrong doing. Step 2) Set the break angle at 90 degrees and use really cheap nuts to ensure that mother will never stay in tune. Step 3) Take those guitars you just built and run them over with a backhoe. Step 4) Have your Director of Brand Experience (whatever that means) and post a video of him threatening other guitar manufacturers with legal action. Step 5) Lose said lawsuits.

OK I realize that Gibson has had its share of problems over the years. I have played a few and some have been wonderful while others were less so, especially in recent years. But the new owners seem to be committed to turning things around. I have not had a chance to play any of the guitars produced since the changeover yet but I am looking forward to it. They certainly screwed up in the past. But they are an American treasure and if you are a guitarist I am sure that you are rooting along with me for them to return to their glory days again. Obviously these are promotional videos and they are trying to recover some of the goodwill they lost. But I say lets give 'em a chance before we start kicking them again. And these videos are very cool and it is the best best thing to going on a factory tour. Many years ago I was an unskilled worker in a woodshop, but I learned enough to say that a lot of the things you see in these videos require quite a bit of skill and it is always worthwhile to see master craftsmen at work. So sit back and enjoy.

I certainly don't want any guitar luthier or manufacturer to fail, but GIbson has had some rather shady business dealings and practices in the past, it's going to take a lot of convincing on their part that their products are still worth a damn, especially when you can find other guitars out their with better QC work and craftsmanship for a fifth of the price of a Les Paul.
