On the 40th anniversary of the bombing of The Grand Hotel in Brighton, Rory Carroll, author and Ireland correspondent for the Guardian, discusses his international bestselling book, Killing Thatcher with fellow journalist and author, Ronan McGreevy.
The plot to assassinate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was an audacious attack on the British government and a turning point in the IRA’s long campaign of war against The Crown. The passage of time can make caricatures of main players in political events, but Rory’s meticulous research investigating the lead up to and impact of the bombing, sheds new light on the people involved and the historic context of their actions.
There are lessons still to be learned from The Troubles. Carroll’s book is a timely warning against rash political reactions when a measured response could ultimately lead towards the peaceful settlement of political differences, benefiting all sides involved.
