"Rory McIlroy, Don't Begrudge Other Players!" Greg Norman Debates LIV Golf With Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan is joined by Australian golfing legend Greg Norman to debate the morality and viability of professional golfers switching from the PGA Tour to the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf. They discuss what it might do for developing the sport and also whether the morality of a tournament taking place in Saudi Arabia is acceptable when considering the culture's controversial stances on women's rights among other things.
Greg believes that an injection of $2 billion into golf can only do good. When asked by Piers if he can separate the morality issues surrounding the LIV Tour, Greg says he looks at it solely as a product that will benefit the game and put more money in the pocket of golf players. When asked about Rory McIlroy's comments on the LIV golf tour "tearing golf apart", Greg suggests that he should not begrudge other players their decision as all golfers, including Rory, are "independent contractors".

It’s simple to see, look at the players and how much fun they are having at a LIV tournament. Look at players at a pga event. They are stiff, there’s no fun, there’s no interaction with fans, or their fellow players. For the people that play, Golf is fun, and it should be fun. LIV = Funner Golf

Lol. The tour has their own rules and the players signed those rules. They could of played elsewhere but they signed tour rules. Now they want to violate those rules and sue the tour so they can play both tours? LIV doesn’t allow their players to do interviews without permission. Imagine an “independent contractor” who can’t speak without permission. Norman has been fighting with the tour for 30 years. This is his payback. So many uninformed people on here.

@@earnwithhearn180 I wish what you said was true but there’s overwhelming evidence that players were often given permission to play in non-sanctioned events. Can you say Tiger Woods! Greg Norman was given exemptions and the list goes on and on and on. The truth is the PGA monopoly, I’m not for profit one I might add, is fat and bloated and entitled. They make an absolute fortune off of their stars and will do anything and everything to shut them down when it does not suit their ends. The easy answer was for the PGA to have a little vision but they’ve not had it in 30 years. It’s an American tour for American players to make American money for their lifestyles. They are a long ways away from promoting golf at a global level

I'm far from being pro-LIV, but Greg does bring up solid points regarding the PGA Tour finally forking out hefty payouts for tournaments. It shows the lack of transparency the PGA Tour has with its players, and if I were a player, I'd be pretty pissed it took a threat like LIV to for the PGA to drop its drawers and finally payout stipends for missed cuts and large payouts for players who make it. You're going to see moral issues with every major entity, whether its the PGA Tour or LIV Golf. I'm glad LIV has become a player, because it's forcing the PGA Tour to do what they should've done right after Tiger came onto the scene and literally generated the Tour billions.

I don't think anyone really pays attention as to how much the PGA Tour has grown in purse size over the years. Some players have indicated that some of these new programs implemented were discussed in the player advisory meetings over two years ago. The player that finished 160th on the PGA Tour earnings list made over $600,000 in 2021-2022 season. I don't get the one-sided view that is loosely discussed. LIV is simply buying these players, most of which are in the twilight of their careers. I don't get it.

P.S if you'd bother to listen to any presser with both ears, every single LIV golfers has acknowledged they are going for the money. And having others reasons is not mutually exclusive. And you'll find only a handful of players of the 48 said anything about playing less and more family time, which again i don't know why you would have an issue with. This applies to every golfer on every tour when it comes to wanting to play for more money and still wanting more family time.

I can't argue with anything Greg Norman said. Here's why LIV will be successful, I believe. Over the years there have been many attempts to create competing sports leagues here in the US. In particular, this has been true with professional football. Without exception all these upstarts failed because they could not attract the top players in the NFL. The money just wasn't there. An anomaly would be Major League Soccer. By any measure it has been successful. That's because we didn't have a competing league, for instance like the English Premier League. LIV has already attracted many of the top players in the world and will probably continue to do so. So the PGA and DP World Tours are constantly under pressure and they will ultimately have to accomodate LIV Golfers. If not, they will be left with a lot of players we've never heard of. It seems to me that the PGA Tour made a strategic mistake by banning players. Doing so does nothing but hurt the PGA Tour. I'd also add that the most critical element for LIV's long term success is getting a main stream TV deal. Fox for example. I just don't think they are going to get that many viewers by streaming their tournaments. Once they secure a TV deal it's game over. And that's just a matter of time.

@@eamonnoneill1340 They're not playing a different kind of golf tournament though. They are literally playing just 18 holes less, everything else is the same more or less, played under R&A/USGA rules. If you actually think about it, a regular 72 hole tournament is actually two back to back 36 hole events, with the first 36 dictating where you start the last 36. And the first 36 is played by so many golfers, the field always breaks into a good and a bad side of the draw. Basically a 72 hole tourney, is actually two back to back 36 holes events with a bunch of luck thrown in over the first 36, and unfair/really good starting score for the last 36 depending on which side of the draw you fell on in the first 36. This makes it less superior to a 54 hole, shotgun start, no cut event, where everyone plays all 54 in same conditions. Then we have the fact, the current OWGR is able to rank tournaments with 54 holes just like it could any other format (so they got no excuses really), and if they refuse to, others such as datagolf are showing how it can be done. This is just math's and can easily be done. This is far simpler math's than calculating orbits of satellites. Give me couple hours and i could come up with half a dozen rankings systems. What amazes me, is how the OWGR can give points at the Tour Championship, which is a limited field event, no cut, and players don't even start on the same score. Nothing gets weirder than that and they still manage to figure out how to give points. And worse still Will Z got points for the event and he did not even hit a shot. This is one of many examples. So when OWGR or the PGAT and their sheep say it's doesn't fit the criteria/rules or they are not playing the same as us, and whatever other excuse they come up with, it's all bs. As for qualifying via other methods outside of rankings such as Open/US Open qualifiers, or winning events (which admittedly you need to have qualified for) that get you in does not impact LIV golfers or change anything about how they work unless they ban LIV players from playing qualifiers. Which if they did, the majors would lose credibility and be in a massive legal battle. So nothing changes. now the PGAT/DPWT will try and limit events to LIV players so they cannot qualify that way. But that is an action taken by spiteful tours, not the R&A or the other major organizers.

I'm an independent contractor who does work for law firms. If I start working for a competing law firm, my clients can cancel our agreement because they simply don't want me to help their competitors. I would never think to insist that I should have the unalienable right to work for both just because I say that I'm an independent contractor. In other words, they are telling me that if I work for a competitor they won't let me work for them. It's the same for LIV and PGA Tour. The Tour doesn't have to take meetings with a competitor and they don't have to allow players, especially when they are working in some regards as paid employees with all the ways that LIV regulates and pays their players, to just pop into their league whenever they want. Norman is a liar.

That is the best rebuttal I’ve heard to date, well said. PGA tour business model with sponsors is based on providing x% of available PGA players to each tournament, so approving releases to play elsewhere instead of that weeks event is part of that equation. That’s why it’s in the PGA player signed agreement.

LIV players dont want to play in PGA tour. They want world ranking points and right to play in majors and Rider cup all of which currently is monopolized by PGA
@VLind-uk6mb
@VLind-uk6mb Год назад
@@zubairhameed The PGA Tour has NOTHING to do with the majors, nor with the Ryder Cup. There seems to be some confusion here between the PGA and the PGA Tour. The PGA is like the R&A. The PGA Tour is a separate entity altogether-- it runs the competitive season, including the Presidents' Cup, which they do own, and the World Golf Championships (although they are nominally run by the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the European Tour and several others). Most of these tours are PGAs -- it stands for Professional Golf Association. The PGA runs the US Ryder Cup team (the DPWT, i.e. the European Tour, runs the European team). It runs one major, the PGA Championship. The Masters is run by Augusta National Golf Club and is an invitational. The Open is run by the R&A, and the US Open is run by the USGA. These four entities determine the composition of their respective fields. I agree that the LIV players are not all that set on playing on the PGA Tour -- several have said that one of the inducements to join LIV was to play less --but they need to play it and other Tours to maintain or improve their ranking points. What they want is for the OWGR to grant LIV ranking points. Which, if sanity prevails, it never will. Why should a "tour" of 48 players, playing only 54 holes without a cut, get points? The senior Tours, which only play 54 also, do not despite having full fields and cuts. LIV offers retirement plans for players whose careers are fading -- Pat Perez would have had a hard time getting into many PGA Tour events. Westwood and Poulter might always have a chance in Europe through invitations, as they are popular, but Westwood was about done on the PGAT and Poulter was headed there. Younger players, some very up and coming, opted for money rather than legacy. Good Lord, Pereira almost won the PGA as a ROOKIE. His future on the PGAT was golden. Henrik Stenson was ALREADY a Ryder Cup Captain; future shoo-ins Westwood, Poulter and Garcia may have sacrificed that opportunity. Cameron Smith, who doubtless is as money-conscious as the next player, was probably the most sincere about playing less -- he has often said he wished he could spend more time in Australia. It was a good interview. But Norman hedged on a Putin-sponsored tour. He does not give a damn about "morality." He is and always has been about money, and he makes few bones about it. LIV is, not purely but certainly simply, a commercial entity. And that, in the end, may be its undoing.

The promotion is golf, it's the media that's stirring the pot, individual players need to let the powers that be step up and clarify their position, namely the PGA and the r&a.middle eastern countries are in ever form of sport from American football, basketball, etc golf ,football, the powers that be have no problem taking their money, but the Americans who have caused and been involved in most wars and caused many an atrocity, suddenly holds there hands up when there structures are under attack, yes I dont agree with there human rights, my main point is that in my opinion the media has a lot to answer for.
