Rory Stewart: Whip system makes the UK an 'elected dictatorship'

Former MP and minister Rory Stewart has told Sky News that the whip system in Parliament makes the UK an "elected dictatorship" - no matter the party in government.
Once a rival to Boris Johnson for the Tory leadership, he said that the system meant that ministers were often appointed due to their loyalty, rather than ability.
The former spy and diplomat was also scathing of western relations towards Russia over Ukraine, saying that providing arms to Ukraine was one of the only options left to counter the Kremlin.

Same. I don't understand why he's a Tory in the first place. His insightful ideas, personal humility and maturity, and strategic long-term thinking are somewhat of an outlier in the party. This is exactly how a democracy is supposed to work. Unfortunately the current system is rigged in a way to prevent this from happening (deliberately, I would imagine) We get to vote in our MPs.. sure, but .. our Draconian voting system doesn't allow fair party representation. And regardless of which party is elected a majority .. what is the point of having those MPs when they just vote as the whip tells them, it completely defeats the point And to top it off, we have major inflation, we aren't building enough houses, wages are low and stagnant.. I mean.. we're a "developed" country where over 2.5 million people need food banks so they don't Starve. So many no longer afford to use their electricity or heating It's clear nobody in charge at the moment actually cares about the people living in the UK

@@bipolarminddroppings hahaha imigaine thinking the monarchy will be desvoled . Theres only 2 ways to get rid of a monarchy. The monarch and heirs accept the decision of the abolishment. Or the monarch and heirs are killed. Which will never happend because the armed forces swear allegiance to the roaly family and wouldn't let that happen trust me I'm in the forces it's a well discussed topic in the barracks. Charles will be king there is nothing to stop him. Parliament dont decide who gets crowned the church of england does. Plus it's well established the country is still pro monarchy 70% to 30%. And the government needs the monarchy it would real struggle with out it.

Fox were kicked out of the UK for breaching broadcasting standards. They then claimed to have left voluntarily as a business decision and told "fact checkers" that they were free to continue broadcasting in the UK if they so chose, which was a half truth at best. Fox could have retained they're right to broadcast in the UK but would have needed to address impartiality issues. Doing so would have completely undermined their modus operandi so they left, which was great news.

It's almost as though an honest person has zero chance in UK politics. Looking back over the last 70 years, the blatant corruption/incompetence today's MPs and Leaders can get away with unscathed is incredible. What a bunch of shameless blagging chancers we have now. And the voters are partly to blame for that. Our engagement with politics shouldn't begin and end with deciding who to vote for and voting. @alexpotts6520

A devil's-advocate defence of whipping might be that MPs are elected to implement their party's manifesto, and that MPs getting elected on a manifesto and then ignoring the things they promised isn't very democratic either. However in this case, the Tories didn't have much of a manifesto to begin with and have thrown away most of what they did have, so that defence doesn't really stand up.

We must as a nation stop rewarding political double speak with votes and start voting for men like Rory Stewart. He’s one of very few politicians now who are actually worthy of the title ‘Right Honourable’. We have all of us become numb and/or acceptant of this idea that “oh that’s just how politicians are…that’s how they talk”. Well we shouldn’t keep putting up with this and then congratulating ourselves for being able to figure out what they really mean because we like playing Sherlock Holmes and impressing all our friends with how much we can read between the lines. People are replacing the skills of virtue with the arrogance of pride in their eye for spotting vice. We think we are doing good pointing out all the weeds or at best ripping them up, but we’re not then tilling the soil and planting flowers and mighty trees. The United Kingdom must return to the centre of its flag or else cede more and more ground to the devils work.
