Tilly ‪@tillysshelf‬ and I share our appreciation of Jane Austen every year during Jane Austen July. This time we think about Austen's wicked wit and observational humour. We enjoy a happy ramble through some her comic writing, especially in her six major novels and reflect on how she uses humour to reveal character or progress a story.
Thank you to the #janeaustenjuly hosts for giving us the excuse to talk about her again.

Finally, the thing about Austen that I love the most is discussed! Such a joy to see humor addressed. I don't think it is talked about nearly enough. The humor being my favorite aspect of Austen's writing is why my favorites tend to be Northanger Abbey, Lady Susan, and Pride & Prejudice. I love any scene in which Lady Catherine is talking about how fabulous she is in comparison with others. I especially love when she talks of being a great appreciator of music and says that she'd have essentially been an incredible musician...if she'd ever bothered to learn an instrument at all. Priceless.

@@angelaluz405 you are so right. Austen's humour is not emphasised enough. I am glad you picked out that scene with Lady Catherine. It is perfect; funny but also epitomises her character. No one appreciates music like she does, she would have been a great musician if she had learnt and so would her daughter of course!

Doubly, doubly delightful. The two of you sharing funny bits from Austen’s works while analyzing the important lace of Austen’s humor.

Jane Austen’s humour is simply wonderful. I love all of Mrs Elton’s moments, and Mr Collins’ desastrous proposal to Lizzie makes me laugh every time. When I last reread S&S I rediscovered the scene you mention, in which Mrs Jennings believes Elinor to be engaged to Colonel Brandon, it’s one of the best ones in the book!

I found sense and sensibility, very funny, and I laughed out loud quite a few times. For some reason, it was the type of humor that I am partial to. Great discussion. Aloha.

I’ve just finished reading S and S and I loved the scene in the shop with Robert Ferrers and the toothpick cases ( that such a thing existed was a surprise to me) - brilliantly done.

@@lorrainetaylor9852 it's a perfect introduction to his character, isn't it? How trivial his interests and how pompus he is. But it also takes a swipe at the idle rich.

Loved this video! I've always read Jane Austen in translation, so I guess some of the humour got lost in the process, but I'm planning on reading all her novels in English for the first time next year, as a little project, and I'll pay special attention to this point 😊

Great discussion! My personal favorite is the comment on Dick Musgrove in Persuasion. It's so ridiculously harsh for someone who doesn't even appear in the book because he's dead! 😂

What a "funny" video! 🤣 I re-read S&S this month after some years. Mostly what I had remembered was Marianne's melancholy, so it was fun to rediscover all the humor. Oh! Mrs Norris & her cream cheese! Time for a MP re-read....

@@kathleencraine7335 it is fascinating what we do and don't remember about a book. Pride and Prejudice has more darkness in it than I remembered between readings. And S&S had more humour, as you say.
