Rosa Ponselle sings "A vucchella" ("A Little Posy") in AI
by Paolo Tosti and Gabriele d'Annunzio
recorded on May 18, 1926 at Camden, New Jersey.
Through AI, a photo of Rosa Ponselle was animated and synchronized to
follow her singing on the record. The original 10-inch disc was digitally
transferred with Magix audio software applied to reduce noise
and enhance tonal qualities.

This AI creation is the closest we are likely to come to seeing and hearing Rosa Ponselle in the prime of her career. Although in 1923 the Bray Studios filmed her making a recording in the Columbia studios on the top floor of the then-new Gotham building in Manhattan, the footage is silent: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sQ6KmeLjLCs.htmlsi=72OEgIWH8bUxWaMy In this AI lip-synching video, she looks as she did in the mid-1920s, in vivid color, with the brass recording horn to her left and the wood-paneled studio in the background. In Meriden, Connecticut, where she spent her youth, she grew up speaking Neapolitan (her parents had emigrated from Caserta, near Naples), and the songs of Paolo Tosti were among her favorites. What amazes me about the lip-synching is how precisely her lips form the words "nu poco pocorillo appassuliatella," the last line of the song. As delightful as her recording is, the Robert Fells AI creation of her singing it is nothing short of incredible!
