I’m astounded by that interview in which Rosalia blatantly states she is from Spain and then turn around and say she’s Latino. Make that make sense. Rosalia recognizes that the “Urbano Latino” genre has become popular globally and dominating the charts so she wants to capitalize off of it. She wants the streams. If the music wasn’t popping she wouldn’t be trying to claim the sound. Nevertheless culture vultures tend to believe they’re helping to shed more light on certain genres by performing them. They refuse to recognize that they’re colonizing a sound for which they will get praised as being “innovative” and from which they will reap financially while the artists who are actually from the culture or created the genre don’t reap as much or get any attention at all.

Yeah, that whole interview made me lose a few brain cells lol! Exactly, Rosalia and her team know that Urban Latino music is dominating the charts. So, now she wants to jump in the genre without allowing Dominican artists to participate in the actual work (excluding Ozuna, Marie, and Tokischa). Or allow other Latin artists, especially Black Latin artists a chance for exposure. P.S. - Your last two sentences are so true Johnie. Imma pin this!

@@JulianSteve I think there is more to this. I'm from Mexico and through out all Latin American and Latin European countries there is this thinking that we all are under the same umbrella of Latin, I think that's why Rosalia called herself Latin. I think is parallel in Mexico when people say we are all the same while at the same time ignoring racism.

@@JulianSteve Hmm, but what would you say to this. Ozuna has more RU-vid subscribers than rosalia and his songs seem to be more popular and have more views, so then why would Rosalia have to include Ozuna if Ozuna seems to be doing better than her?

@@viomusardathefluffysealgas9347 That's a good point. The thing is Rosalia benefits more from having Ozuna on a record. She's gaining more than Ozuna (in a sense). Also, the collaboration was a while back (2018 -19).

She always gives credit and says her inspirations. As a latino myself, I could care less if she wants to do bachata, reggaeton or cumbia. At the end of the day, is her life and she’s the artist. If you dislike her, or her music just ignore it. There are plenty of artist out there, however I must say that ppl are hypocrite af, when other Latinx artist appropriate other genres they look to the other side.

24:26 she doesn't care because millions of latinos don't care about her cultural appropriation 🤷🏻‍♂️ they consume her music and they go to her shows, so... Most of latinos don't care 😂 you can see so many latin artists loving her music too.

I think Rosalia using styles of music from other cultures is okay, however I think that at this point one can't ignore the hierarchal structure of the colonized world, and it's not good that because she is white she gets elevated and invested on for doing the music others having been doing before, I think if Rosalia helped promote for example Dominican artists and investing in them and sharing her access of privilege with them, that would make things better.

The way she NOTICEABLY changes her accent in songs where she’s trying to appropriate a style from a different culture makes it blatantly obvious she knows wth she’s doing…the fact that two songs on her new album (MOTOMAMI) are stolen directly from the Puerto Rican vernacular/slang and she uses words that she stole from the DR in other songs is straight colonizer behavior, especially because the most she does to benefit those communities she steals from is mentioning them once in a while and saying, “I love their culture! It feels like my own 🥰,” like it’s a cute or noble comment. She’s talented for sure but she isn’t doing nothing more special than other NON-WHITE Latinx artists have been doing for years but they have never been recognized for it the same way as her because she’s white and privileged 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I really enjoyed this video! I’ve been subscribed to you for a while and I’m so glad there are more and more Afro Latino voices on social media talking about this type of thing. I did wonder about Rosalía. I’m from the UK and the descendent of people colonised/enslaved by the British. I know how Spaniards don’t like to acknowledge their own coloniser history that much if at all, esp because present day Spain is not doing so well economically compared to other former colonisers, and also because Spaniards are notoriously racist. I really like hearing about the African diaspora and feel kinda protective sometimes. I didn’t even know Rosalía had nothing to do with Latinamerica until fairly recently so her mopping the vibe and sound is wild to me.

I got told by somebody from Asia that they love Latin music because they listen to Rosalia. I was so confused, and I'm like "no man, that's Spanish music, she plays the traditional Spanish genre of flamenco; Latin music is different". I sent this person a playlist with Juan Luis Guerra, Chichi Peralta, Juan Gabriel, Los Pericos, Joao Gilberto, Carlos Gardel, Willie Colon, etc. Because this is the kind of music I grew up listenning as a Latinx person living in the continent. Now I understand why I received what I perceived as an ignorant comment; because colonizer Rosalia has been appropriating Latin culture. The person from Asia knew Latin music, they just didn't know Latin artists. I would have been fine if they had said "Despacito" instead. For real Julian, when you said that you were done with the old meaning, I felt like you gave me a hug. I am so done with this stupidity about the old meaning, who has ever said that the French and the Portuguese were Latin too? I have NEVER heard this in my life, but now we want to give a pass to Spain because we like Paella and Spanish wine. No. I'm so done. The European people will throw us under the bus every time because of our "ghetto" and "third world" things, but when an individual European person smells money from our culture, then it's a wrap. Prime example in the Netflix series about Luis Miguel, how his racist Spanish father was not okay with mixing with the "sudacas" but he was fine with Luis Miguel making money from them. And honestly, how can Rosalia be so ignorant to talk about feeling so at home in Latin America. Of course she feels at home, her country colonized, conquered, conducted genocide... Yes, Rosalia, your country made it such that you, more than 200 years later, would still feel at home in our countries. That's what colonization does. Then Spain decided that as a government they would have dictatorship, and a bunch of y'all's peoples came to our countries, to be racist to us, and become a minority that still somehow is revered in the same way that the colonizers v 1.0 were. .............................................. I am so done. Like okay, let's say. Rosalia collaborates with Meghan Thee Stallion and Beyonce, is she gonna appropriate the African-American culture? Like I don't understand how collaborating with Osuma and J Balvin make it okay for her to take the aesthetic of the genre like Iggy Azalea. I want colonizers to stay in their lane and stop appropriating our cultures to make their money; they recognize that as white people they are so bland without our cultures that they make no impact into the public conciousness without being culture vultures, or they wouldn't even go there first. Rosalia could totally participate in the genre of Latin music and still stay in her lane as a white Spanish woman. Look at Macklemore, yes his music is heavily criticized and he is the butt of many jokes, but he still understands that he is a guest in the rap music genre, gives his respect to those who are the pillars of that genre, and he knows he is making music for white people under the broad white American culture. TL;DR: I am angry at Rosalia and other white artists for not participating in the culture as a respectful guest.

I saw the interview where she said she should be categorized as a Latinx woman as the Spanish language comes from Latin -___- I as a black woman of mixed African European, Amerindian and Asian descent wanted to get in the screen and smack her because its bullshit. I'm from Mozambique Angola and Portugal mostly so I only speak Portuguese never in no way have i classified myself as latinx even when non latinx people assume that i am categorized as one, im a musician i will still not call myself one, I HAVE NEVER seen or heard one of our artists ever call themselves that I have a cousin who is half spanish and still does not call herself latina. I'll be honest I am a fan of her work as I think its innovative in a way in terms of the flamenco side of things do like her other songs to but when i listen to some lyrics it does make me feel a bit girl what Ive heard lyrics of hers where she says she is looking more morena (no white person should say this morena means brown) even when she sampled la negra tiene tumbao in some lyrics had me feeling shocked cos how are you going to remix a lyric about black women to fit your aesthetic!!!!! Even when my friend said some ciganos (gypsys) are annoyed at her work as she is not of gypsy descent. But with all of this I blame pharrell and all the men of colour around her and it made me realise some things the downfall of afro latinx women in music are the men in the music industry because they will use all their money and resources to put non black latinx women who cant hold a candle to black latinx performers in a higher position.

Damn another day another problematic fave of mine getting dragged for being problematic and for the millionth time I’m HERE FOR IT ALL 😂😂😂 but on a serious note let me say I love Rosalia I’ve love her artistry, her music and her personality since I first discovered her music in 2018 her recent album Motomami is my album of the year so far (just waiting for my girl Taylor to drop midnights next month) just a innovative impeccable masterpiece HOWEVER with that being said my girl Rosalia is indeed a culture vulture no doubt about that, I understand and appreciate her inspiration to afro Latin American, afro Caribbean and black American music entirely and she being an artist outside of those communities shouldn’t incorporate those influences in her music but the problem is how she gets this praises for it when she’s not of afro Latina/DOCAS background when the artists in those communities who are being innovative to the same music are looked down upon. Not to mention why is she promoting herself as a Latina how are you a upper class white Spaniard girl trying to attach yourself as a lower-class/inner city afro Latina-American like in your interviews (that billboard growing up Latina is so cringe) and public persona?? And especially when you are aware (can’t say she isn’t she literally a whole college educate girl who studied the cultural history of flamenco music) of the history of colonialism, slavery and white supremacy within afro Latin American, afro Caribbean and black American cultures? Like nah sis you doing too much I believe the backlash against Rosalia wouldn’t less brutal if she didn’t participate in this erasure and whitewashing that the media and award shows are already doing

And let's not forget that Rosalía in Spain is criticized for not respecting the calé or gypsy culture, the original people and creator of flamenco, even when she has been called to her attention for it, her response was to say "that culture belongs to everyone " and forbade certain questions. She takes advantage of other cultures but does not give a voice or recognition to the people or the comunites that she owes, that is, a covert racist. Not to mention how you can go as a feminist and forget about the racialized women for whom you are in your place. Sorry if my english is not that good.

Okay there are are a lot of mistakes in your videos. First of all, the woman with her in 1:21 is Rebecca who is her manager not her mother, Pilar. Second of all, I think it's lot more complex than that. Rosalia should definitely take awareness about her position as a white woman, I do agree. I do agree that she doesn't need to take a romani accent or to use puerto rican slangs. Even if I do understand that she did her album in several latin countries and that's why she wanted to include the influences, the languages of the countries etc. Nonethless, I think this debate is loooooot deeper than that. A lot of african and indigenes artists aren't valorized in latino industry and that's the tea, especially black women. Latino industry valorize white artists (Karol g, Bad Bunny, Anitta, etc) because there are marketable. There's a lot of racism, sexism and colorism in latino industry (it's not a critic against them, because at the end of the day which industry doesn't do that ? SPOILER ALERT ? None) There's a gap in the system and it enables Rosalia to insert herself. A lot of latino artist denounce that but there are put in the shadow and the main latino artist in the mainstream protect their legacy and are too busy to get their money (which is not judgemental, not everyone speaks about polit and I do get it) ceremonies, instuitions, etc are all to blame. Rosalia should definitely be aware of her privilege. Nonetheless, she doesn't represent a SYSTEM. White system is a whole group of power dynamic in politics, social, economics, etc. It's not something that she could change herself alone, it's a reflexion that the whole societies should think about how we treated other and especially the minorites. But the truth is no one do care, no one wants to take the responsability of it. Rosalia also couldn't be responsible of the esclavigsm and colonialism, but of course she needs to learn better and to improve herself. Moreover, she's not a symbol of it, latino people speak by themselves they don't need Rosalia to speak on her name and also if she starts to talk about it just to please people then it would be useless. That's not how you should fight against an infair system even in musical industry. The solution is to break the codes and to valoized black latina women/indigenes women. A lot of them are hella talented and creative and don't get this chances because they consider as ugly or replaceable and it's not true. The solution is to create fair rules in ceremonies. You can't blame Rosalia, then applause Bad Bunny who puts a durag during the Superbowl Show with JLO and Shakira. People need to be cohererent and also some of you blame Rosalia about everything in industry, things that were before she came in industry. If Rosalia leave, industry would do the same thing with other artist with or without her that's why it's important to precise that it's because of a system and not only her fault even if I do agree that she participates in a way.

@@thesassynerd hmmm, may not be problematic, and she may have gained more fans when she started playing for the US market (and that wasn't the problematic thing... You're right, problematic is not the right word for Shakira)... The issue was (before she was marketed to the US) when she started out with Pies Descalzo, it was a alternative rock (yet pop) sound and it what was brought her recognition as an artist in the LatinX music. When Dónde Están los Ladrones, it was still a bit alternative rock-pop, but what was great that she incorporated some of her Arabian sounds to celebrate her heritage (one of her parents are from the middle east, can't recall 😅) which was so original and it was very her, and we loved her for it! But after Whenever, Wherever came out (I think I got the title wrong 😅), the LatinX fans started to see her as a sellout because she left behind some of the sounds that made her the artist they all fell for. And I see why too. I do like Shakira but I only seem to like her older music. Anything new she has made it's just very generic (way too pop and commercial IMO), and not a fan of her English music. To me, it just doesn't hit the same 😕

I cannot speak for black Dominican musicians, but I can say that all of the things pointed out in this video regarding the industry and their stars are accurate. I'm glad you called it out in this and many of your videos, it's necessary, music enthusiast and fans should not tolerate and normalize any of this , art deserves to stay in dialogue, being analyzed and questioned, that's the whole point of it. Also, we as musicians need to bring ourselves back to earth, being reminded that we cannot get away with anything Just because we have talent, charisma, a rough life, etc. We are not above everyone else, we are Just artists. I know I'm late to do this, but in case someone read this, I'm going to mention some Dominican musicians and dancers, in a too late attempt to reverse part of this mess Alexandra La Reina Luis Vargas Rodolfo Montaño Castro (a RU-vid channel with lots of videos of Dominican Bachata dancers with song credits) And dropping two great black female singers/songwriters from my country: Luta Cruz Nekki Again thank you for this!! Just because she’s from Spain and singing in other countries styles shouldn’t define her as a colonizer. She’s not the only one either who does that, you can blame the industry. This girl just wants to sing have fun and be known as a great singer Let’s return to enjoying music solely for the sounds and how it makes us feel

I don’t like Rosalia’s music and I have no opinion of her personally because I don’t know her much. However, I don’t think we should gatekeep reggeton and we should not prevent any other artist from performing whatever music they want to. They can do a genre a music and infuse their culture or flair to it. She maybe contributing to advancing the genre.Example: Urban music and she putting in flamenco elements etc. i really cannot stand her music but I think she is free to do whatever she wants to perform so be it. It makes music more diversified. Cultural appropriation exists I know but we don’t know who’s doing it and it’s hard to tell who actually loves the music and who does it for the money. Elvis Presley loved black music and is that appropriation? Perhaps but unless Elvis would have said so, there is no way to know. Rosalia can sing whatever she wants. Period. Is she appropriating ? maybe yes maybe not hard to prove so why even bother? I know one thing: She is not making a dime from me because she does not do anything for me. If someone Asian makes heavy metal, they should. Just because they were born in another culture or country, doesn’t take away the fact an Asian artist may truly love the genre and they want to express it by adding Asian instruments or whatever

When and why did it become globally acceptable to gate keep cultures? Music is WORLDWIDE music is a language of the soul. If you vibe with it you vibe, if you don’t so what? This argument is poorly conducted. That’s like saying Americans can’t eat Chinese food, or blacks can’t dance cumbia and merengue (they do) this whole white vs colored/indigenous tale is perpetually placed in front of us to bring us away from harmony. When we know worldwide music is the one thing that brings different peoples together.

hi! i have a question or two if you don't mind me asking 😊 i've done research on this before, and so the only consistent conclusion that comes up for it is respect, research, keeping an open mind, give credit, and recognizing that if you are participating in a culture that isn't yours, there may or may not be some bounderies set for you. if someone were to participate in making music that isn't from their cultural background, how would you go about it? in the video, i understand the part where you mentioned how Rosalia should have consulted and worked with people from that culture when making music from said culture, and assuming that applies here, is there anything else that's vital to the whole process? also, something else thats come up is proffit and taking up space within that cultural section of the industry. would a way of not proffiting off of the thing you are doing be by using that money and attention to give back to the community you are partaking in? and what would be a good way of not taking up space? you don't have to answer this obviously, and if you don't want to for whatever reason, it's perfectly understandable. thank you for the time and effort you put aside for these videos, they're really educational!

I never heard of Rosalia until her album Motomami came out 😅 Not going to lie, haven't listen to reggaeton (at least hardcore or to new artists) for a minute, ans was like "iight" not bad? But when i discovered that she started out as a flamenco singer from Spain... And she's leading in the reggaeton and dembow genre at a international level where she's popping in the US?? My ears started to peek... Idk, that shit was wayyyyyyy off. Like, do you know how many female artists were trying to break it into the reggaeton?? Not many, and the one that did (Ivy Queen) did not get the same praise as her.... Better yet, she uses the moaning voice/sound that was so popular in the 90s/00s reggaeton, like where are those ladies flowers???? Rosalia is talented AF, i actually like her Flamenco stuff more than her current stuff.... There said my piece 😂 Edit: Ok, I'm at the part when she released "Motomami", and I'll make a confession, i didn't listen to the whole album 😂 but the fact she did a bachata... With the Wknd?!
