Rosalinda® Indian Hawthorne Tree Form - In this video I plant a tree-formed Indian Hawthorn in my landscape. I have several tree form plants. They are great for adding height without taking up so much ground space.

Indian Hawthornes are very common here in So. Cal., mostly in medians and parks. I prefer the tree form as well which makes them more interesting than the common shrub form.

Ok I bought a dogwood tree BEFORE I watched Jim’s video! That was my first mistake. Already moved it (we are zone 8B) for some afternoon shade. Good grief. I will not buy another tree before I see if Jim has a video. Now I just hope for it to grow. Oh also it’s in the front yard (we have the occasional deer) Sorry Jim, I hope I’m not letting you down. 😆

I had a Majestic Beauty Indian Hawthorn, that is about 15 feet tall with a 10-inch trunk. Would have an unbelievable amount of flowers in the early spring. Unfortunately, I think the week of freezing temps (low of 4 degrees F) in Austin killed it even tho it is rated for zone 7

I have a Purple Pillar rose of sharon which is a really nice 10+ foot tall shrub that only gets a bit over 2 feet wide. Extremely cold hardy as well. Deciduous but I think the branch structure makes it look very interesting during winter once all the leaves drop off and it is covered in flowers all summer. A bit of an ugly duckling phase when it starts to drop the leaves though.
@mercury_rising
@mercury_rising 3 года назад
I’m debating putting that in where I have a pretty narrow strip. Screening would be great. They have a white one as well. Do they make a mess when the flowers drop?
@shawnfox7393
@shawnfox7393 3 года назад
@@mercury_rising I have mine in a 4 foot deep bed against a fence with daffodils and daylilies planted below them so I don't notice the flower litter, but as they are usually covered in flowers and the flowers only last one day they do drop quite a lot of them. I don't like the white one, the flowers turn brown before falling off and to me it just doesn't look anywhere near as good as the purple flowers. Also mine are planted on the south side of a brown fence, the extra warmth in spring causes them to leaf out a few weeks earlier than they otherwise would, normally rose of sharon tend to leaf out fairly late. Anyway I love mine, only negative for me is they do look a bit ugly for a few weeks when they start dropping their leaves in the fall, but they look great the rest of the year.

Various Indian Hawthorns are used in commercial landscapes around the Fort Worth area, zone 7b/8a. Many, if not most, seem to have been killed by the crazy winter this year. So sad. 🙁

Finally got one! So happy! It’s so beautiful and already completely budded out.😁 But yeah, it’s a Southern Living Plant Collection, and I believe it was tree formed on a grafted stock; pretty big already for a 7 gallon pot (6ft tall, 3-4ft wide). I found it today at a local nursery. I gave up awhile ago trying to get it online. If you’re in zones 7-9 I would check around now at your local nurseries.

So sorry to hear that. Hopefully that was a once in 40 year freeze, but I fear these freezes are becoming more frequent. We lost a viburnum, 3 Mexican honeysuckles, and lantanas. The abelias are still just sitting there, looking pretty good, but no new growth

@@nomadinkstudio thanks for your kind words. The loss was devastating and now there’s a big gap to fill in the same area....
