The original was done by a guy named Mohammed Mustapha. This love song is sort of like Kenneth Salick's Radica- how he claimed that tune of his to be based on a true story. David Ramoutar & Naya Fasana did nothing more than update a classic from the 1970s-1980s'. There are refferences to Indian film stars of that era in this song- Dharmendra & Hema Malini as well as Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bhaduri (stars of the 1970s-1980s). There is also a music video of this on RU-vid- so either way there are multiple ways of enjoying this song. This song is also available on the CD Guyana Baboo & Pack Up- Terry Gajraj & David Ramoutar Mohabir Records (1993).
I love this song but at the same time, it makes me so sad. I remember growing up in Guyana, this was a typical problem, two young people that love each other but could not be together because their parents didn’t approve it which sometimes lead to them running away, forced to marry someone else or even suicide. So heartbreaking 😢🥺
0. I am in love with a girl, she is from Rosehall town; but her mother was the cause for our separation. I love Hemwanti, she always called me, Sir; but her mother used to say, I couldn’t get her. 1. This beautiful girl Hema, she loved me like a brother. But her mother always accused me, of being her lover. (F) Sonny, you heard what my mother always say; I love you, O my darling, please carry me away. 2. I told her, “If I do this, then I will be wrong.” She said, “O my darling, but to me, you belong.” I said, “O my darling, what will your mother do.” She said, “I don’t care darling, as long as I’m with you.” I knew I had to take her, as she couldn’t stay. It was a good morning when we ran away. 3.(F) When my mother came that day, with the policeman People were going to say I played with Sonny Rambachan. Your lips are so tender, your body is so warm. I swear, Hema darling, you won’t come to no harm. 4. The police took us, to the police station land. You told all of them, you want me as your husband. I planned to get married, on my seventeenth birthday. My mother then took me, by my maamoo to stay. I went back to your mother, with tears in my life. She was still telling me that Hema can’t be your wife. 5. I prayed to Lord Raama and to Ganesh Baaba; so that to all our prayers, they will both say, ji haa’. I was talking with my sweet Hemwanti, one day. And we both said, we should bow down and pray. For no matter, what her mother, used to say. She now loves and visits us, once every day! .
