Finally someone who has given a leaf taste description in their video. Thank you. Usually someone will say it's terrible and not give a reason why. I'm thinking about trying this plant as a lettuce substitute. At the least I've read the flowers are tasty.

They are beautiful bushes. We brought seeds from the ones we had when we lived in KY. and planted them over here in MO. in our yard. Its been over 23 years now and they are all just about as tall as the house. I kept them trimmed for many years, but have just let them go. They are still beautiful 😊 🌱 🌸

That’s awesome- I have seen them all my life in yards but didn’t know they were even usable until I saw Rain Country make a vinegar with the flowers

Very good info. So glad I found your video on Rose of Sharon. We bought a house and it us tall and wide. It's June here in Alabama and there starting to bloom. I look forward to making medicine with it.

Great information! I have Rose of Sharon bushes growing the entire length of my fence. I have always trimmed the seed pods because the seeds blow everywhere and the volunteers are hard to pull if you don't get them young. I had no idea they were an edible plant. I am going to go and harvest some blooms to dehydrate for tea and leaves to try in my salad tonight. Thanks so much for sharing. Let me know if you want me to save seeds for you this fall. All our love, Francine 💕😊

Leaves when very young and translucent are best for salad. When young leaves get a bit older they are good cooked like spinach and added to other cooked veggies. Mature leaves are too tough for eating. I enjoyed your video!

I just got myself a hibiscus sabdiffera tree and remember finding out it was in the mallow family. This is apparently more suited for a cool climate than my 'sorrel'. It probably won't bear much in English weather. The younger leaves reminds me a bit of hawthorn. If I see this about I will try it.

The one problem I have found about Rose of Sharon is that they reseed a little too happily. Back in Georgia I had them in many colors and every spring I had to get rid of hundreds of seedlings. So, to save myself some work, I tried to make them into topiaries. I chose a pure white seedling, (my favorite) and let it grow into one single stem, removing the leaves as it grew. I let it grow to about 3 feet, at which time I pinched off the top 2 leaves, then, repeat, repeat, repeat. . . within a couple of years, I had a nice ball of branches, but I kept pruning to allow the main trunk to get stronger. I bloomed abundantly during the entire warm season and it was glorious! I also dead headed rigorously, to avoid too many seeds. And, Tah dah, 3 years later I had a perfectly behaved Rose of Sharon, for the first time in my life. Itwas worth it.
@StringfieldRidgeFarm

I guess that is an issue further south because someone else said it was invasive and I thought WHAT! We never have that problem here near me. Glad you got yours under control.

Rose of Sharon are most likely growing due to birds or wind. Each little pod becomes seeds after bloom I believe and they will grow like weeds like maple trees so be aware. They are very easy to grow. And now that I found out that they are edible, I will preserve a few seeds from my neighbors back yard growing into mine. We had them growing like weeds and I cut mine down. Now that it's clear back there I might allow one to grow low and control the area around it. This is wonderful information. Thank you. ❤️

I haven't had any problem with them getting out of hand. There are 2 on our property and we moved the one to have it where we wanted it, but other than that they have stayed put and not spread. Yes, I think it is a good wild edible to keep. Thank You

Check out Doug and Stacey they collect the leaves and flowers wash them well to get the ants off. They makes frittata and add a half of a small onion with a dozen eggs beaten and Ghee lines the Pyrex dish then chop up the flowers and leaves beat up the eggs with salt and pepper and a splash of water add the chopped rose of Sharon leaves and flowers with the chopped onion Ann pop into a medium oven for half an hour. Enjoy

When we first moved into our house, our dogs would go straight to our rose of Sharon and start eating the leaves. We would chase them off, but them they just waited until we were not looking and made a beeline back to the leaves, then my vet said it was okay. 😂 One of my favorites things to do in the morning is watch the bees playing in pollen. 😍 On the tincture, do you sip it, eat the flower or both?

So for the rose of sharon tincture, do you just take a teaspoon, like medicine? What are the ways you actually consume/apply the tincture? Thanks.
@dkoch42
@dkoch42 Год назад
A year later, and still no answer... the video has great info, but yeah, HOW does one use it? When I hear tincture, I think 'iodine'. External application. But clearly this is meant for oral consumption. So, how much? Cut up flower and eat it? Or drink the liquid inside? Do we allow the alcohol to evap off the dose before using? So many questions, and no answers...

@@StringfieldRidgeFarm Instead of moving things to his own property or getting the property ready to live at, he's been spending time with his friend's widow. He wants me to go back to work now. In a month he wants me to sign paperwork to get him as Daniel's primary caretaker and me as the secondary. He told me it was so he can get Daniel on SSI and apply him to school. What will change in a month? If I get a job it will mean a steady income. Wouldn't he try to get child support from me? It's like he wants me out of the picture but to have me support him staying at home. I guess I'll try to find my own place when I get a job. Hopefully one day I meet a farmer to marry. That's the only way I'll ever have the acreage I want.

When I bought my house there were two Rose of Sharon bushes. Sadly we had to take one out to put in a shed. I did not know back then how easy there are to transplant. So, when the older lady next door sold her house she told me to come over and get her bushes and transplant them. I did and now we have 4 more bushes. I love them!!! My question is this: the oldest bush is covered with thick green moss. Not lichen. I am in Oregon in the Willamette valley. Should I try to take the moss off? Use moss killer then power wash it off? I want the bush to stay healthy and be vibrant and the moss covers about 3/4s of the whole plant and goes nearly to the top of it. It is probably 7-8 feet tall. Any advise would help. Many thanks. Love your channel!

Wow I’ve never had miss on any of them. We are in western Kentucky. So I’m not real sure how to answer it I think I would definitely take it off. I don’t think I would use a moss killer. I would just pull it off. Maybe look up a natural way to get rid of the moss! Good luck! Thanks for watching
