I saw this production and after this number I immediately stood up and started cheering - she paced the stage and walked right over to me and pointed! My little gay ass was sent to heaven.
@@kaitlynrowena5463would’ve been a bad way. Patti is notorious for stopping her performances to call out people she feels are disrespectful of the atmosphere of a theatre. Show filmers, talkers, etc.
Patti was terrifying in this part. Her Everything’s Coming Up Roses is the most disturbing interpretation I’ve ever seen, and here in Rose’s Turn we truly see a psychotic breakdown before our eyes. She earned every best actress award that season on Broadway, each one so deserved.
@@ACinemafanatic Saw Patti live. Saw video of Angela. Respectfully disagree. Patti goes deeper emotionally and seems truly psychotic. A lacerating performance. And, in some ways, accurate. According to stories, Rose Hovick wasn't just a "stage mother", she was deeply disturbed and may have killed a woman. At any rate, I am sparing with standing ovations, but leapt to my feet for this performance. I don't know how actors throw themselves into roles like this night after night.
@@jlasf I see what you’re saying but Angela’s approach first did it where rose seems like she’s snapped for a bit with her bowing like there’s an audience cheering for her and she’s smiling almost psychotically and then Patti I think really went more deranged with it a bit darker as well with her portrayal
Patti still gives a fresh take on her roles, even after decades. Moreover, she's truly splendid for sparing the life of the bootlegger during the time of this filming. I only hope she was quick and merciful with their demise thereafter.
Having worked on Bway for many years and met the legend that is Patti Lupone … yes she is an alien in that she is otherworldly in her capacity to strike equal parts of complete fear and utter joy with every performance. She is a stellar star. Period.
Yes, I think it really was. I saw Patti in this twice - a matinee and an evening performance on the same day (I know - mad!) and her evening performance of this was very different to the way she had performed it a few hours earlier. I thought it was quite strange at the time (and still do, I think). In London, I saw Imelda Staunton in the role three times and her performance seemed completely identical each time - exactly the same intonations, gestures etc… Staunton’s performance was my favourite, but it seemed identical each time. Patti’s performances were quite different on the day I saw them.
I saw this production so many times back then that I actually lost count. Gypsy is a great show but there will NEVER be another production like this one everrrrrrr!
I saw the show and I got the feeling she was playing everything that came before at a level 7 intensity. We know she can blast it whenever she wants. So, I was a bit surprised so much seemed a bit muted. But then I realized she was saving it up for the end. She turned its up to 11, as they say in "Spinal Tap."
The literal manifestation of a "no holds barred" performance! I'm literally shaking, thinking about everything that ran through Momma Rose's head in this moment. It can be, either, traumatizing or liberating, and PLP took from BOTH columns!
Bless you for risking your life like this! And thank you! So many of us live over seas or well years have passed. Never would we have been able to see this live. So seeing this really means a lot
Why did I do it? What did it get me? Scrapbooks full of me in the background. Give 'em love and what does it get ya? What does it get ya? One quick look as each of 'em leaves you. All your life and what does it get ya? Thanks a lot and out with the garbage, They take bows and you're battin' zero. I had a dream. I dreamed it for you, June. It wasn't for me, Herbie. And if it wasn't for me then where would you be, Miss Gypsy Rose Lee? Well, someone tell me, when is it my turn? Don't I get a dream for myself? Starting now it's gonna be my turn. Gangway, world, get off of my runway! Starting now I bat a thousand! This time, boys, I'm taking the bows and Everything's coming up Rose! Everything's coming up roses! Everything's coming up roses this time for me! For me! For me! For me! For me! For me! For me!
Wow... I didn't watch this, because I assumed it was from one of the other 2008 boots (you know what assuming does!), but someone informed me I was wrong, so I skipped right over here. This is AMAZING! Truly wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing it!
This number always reminds me of Garland for some reason I always wonder if Judy Garland had been born into an era where her talent had been better looked after maybe in her 40s/50s she could have done Mama Rose I think she would have been incredible No disrespect to LaPone who is clearly a genius that's been established
@@user-gz9uk4rn5p so sad for her that she just became too troubled as a person to be reliable but equally sad for the public in general We were robbed when she died at 47 But from day one Garland never really stood a chance Even when she was a child her own mother was cashing in
I remember seeing this on Broadway and was not impressed with her performance. Too much yelling and shouting, really over the top. Ethel was the definitive Rose, and Angela did a impressive job as well. Saw Patty in Anything Goes, she was great in that.
@@matthamilton875 or maybe Rose is just a woman coming to terms with her life and finally realizing what motivated her for all those decades. . . one doesn't need to go psychotic and scream to do that
Every performer brings their own interpretation to the role of Madame Rose. Merman created it and it was a powerhouse performance. Lansbury gave a performance that was a masterclass in acting. Daly also acted the role brilliantly. LuPone brought forth the desperation and manic energy of the role. Staunton was another masterclass in acting. As for Peters, I will draw the curtain of charity over her performance. She just wasn't right for the role. I like her in almost everything else that she's done, but not in Gypsy. And not as Dolly. Just not right for her.
Does anyone else think Patti is not really playing Mama Rose by this point? It's more...DIVA LA LUPONE....WATCH ME!! It's overblown... exageratated. Okay, LA LUPONE IS LA LUPONE, but I'm not particularly impressed. Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and even Bernadette Peters, had more subtlety and humanity in the role. Betty Buckley (Paper Mill Playhouse: 1998) was an exploding volcano. Okay, LA LUPONE-- it's YOUR turn-- but she just seems to be showing off and screaming here (just my opinion).
thank you! somebody finally said it cause I wasn’t brave enough to… i get what she’s doing but it doesn’t t hit for me! It’s the very end of the show and defines her whole performance. I would’ve been disappointed seeing this live.
