Gotta say, the historic society really did a brilliant job restoring that property and I am BEYOND impressed that they kept that architectural masterpiece as it was originally intended, (unlike the amateurs here in Toronto, as Casa Loma has been turned into a ghastly Las Vegas venue for random events.)
A job well done! I first visited Rosecliff in September of 1976 with my bride. My wife and I were later at Rosecliff in the 1990's for my wife's cousin's wedding reception. It is an absolutely inspiring building and grounds. In 1973, I was the sergeant in charge of Miss Doris Duke's residence on the Duke Farms Police Dept. in Hillsborough, NJ. She would tell me she loved Newport and I remember watching the staff loading up the box trucks with glassware, dinner service, silverware and chairs for the Newport Jazz Festival. Another truck would bring up flowers from the Duke Gardens. Wish you all the best with preserving these magnificent structures that are a part of American history and culture.
Thank goodness for Newport. After watching so many videos of the lost gems on 5th Avenue in New York city, it's really gratifying to see that not all traces of the Gilded Age exist only in photos.

I grew up with these mansions and this one (RoseCliff) and The Elms are the two most beautiful ones in the whole collection. Both are French Chateau architecture. The Elms is a copy of Chateau d' Asnieres just outside of Paris and the Berwinds asked their architect to replicate Chateau d' Asnieres in Newport. The one outside of Paris no longer has any grounds, but, it is open to the public. RoseCliff was built by a silver heiress, Mrs. Olerichs, and definitely has a feminine, and very elegant architecture. She and her architects built Rosecliff which has the largest ballroom in all of Newport. It's a unique house and while it is a large mansion, it's definitely a house that you can actually live in. The Vanderbilt's Breakers, on the other hand, is so over-the-top huge I don't know anyone who would want to live there, or Marble house for that matter. Bob L.
I loved the breakers as a teen. It was lavish and unique. I especially loved all the little nooks, like the game room around the corner in the library and the fountain under the stairs. I loved the platinum etching in the sitting room and the size of the billiard room. As I grew up, I can appreciate the simplicity of the Elms and it's gardens are spectacular (at least they had been). I'm not too keen on what they have done to the interior of RoseCliff. The exterior is exquisite, but they modernized many of the rooms; especially upstairs. I understand they had to in order to use it as a wedding venue, but the charm of the mansion is sort of lost.
My favorite mansion in Newport (Marble House not far behind) because it is the most intimidating style of French. The staircase alone is magnificent. Harry Lehr said Mrs Oelrichs was vicious and almost malevolent and said he detested her BUT he still admired her grace and poise.
It's one of them ... I Googled it and there are three different ones ... just Google buildings used for Gatsby's house 1974 and.... Marble House mansion , also Linden Place mansion are the other 2.
I cannot stand when someone post a video of a beautiful peace of real estate - for sale or celebration - and they keep interrupting with views of the narrators talking. NO ONE really wants to see that and be taken out of the process of 'touring' this place. Voice-overs are bad enough but to keep showing up the same faces repeatedly made me stop watching in 30 seconds. At least you got a hit.
Did you NOT read the title? It’s not a video of a tour of the house. By definition, it is a video about the most recent renovations that were done to the house and grounds. Therefore, the narration was a necessary part of the video.
Place is now a wedding venue and has lost all its charm nothing to see when you tour shame how they close off half of the building as I was told when visiting in December the rooms are closed off due to needing renovation guess the 7 million didn’t make inside the house.
